Treatment Options for Children with Hepatitis B
When given the news that a child has chronic hepatitis B, the first question many parents ask is what treatment options are available to prevent or slow liver disease?
Normally, chronic hepatitis B is a mild disease in children and teens. Often, young people experience an immune tolerant stage during the first two decades of the disease, during which there is little damage to their livers. As a result, the incidence of liver inflammation, scarring, cirrhosis and liver cancer is low in children and adolescents.
However, in some children the virus rapidly replicates and causes extensive liver damage. It is these children who need immediate medical intervention from the small arsenal of drugs currently available to halt liver disease.
