Your e-mail about dreading going back to school really cracked me up. After all these years you’ve been a teacher, surely you can’t still be dreading the start of the new school year as much as you did when you were on the other side of the desk? Anyway, I’m flattered you asked to pick my brains for ideas for a fun project to do with your senior students. Here’s one I did with my lot at the end of last year. We were discussing all the terrible things happening everywhere and how everything is on fire, etc. Seeing as the students’ generation is the so- called ‘snowflake’ or ‘millennial’ generation, and snowflakes have the power to put out fire, I asked them to give a presentation on how young people can and do change the world (for the better, of course!).
As you might expect, Greta Thunberg was the first name on most lips. (My computer keeps autocorrecting her name to ‘Great Thunberg’, which is a sure sign of artificial intelligence if you ask me!) It’s hard to believe that a 15-year old could go from an unknown to a household name for climate activism so quickly. It gave me such hope for the future to hear so many of the students talking about her school strike and how it’s inspiring them to take action to combat the climate crisis. Her message that you are never too small to make a difference seems to have really struck a chord. It reminds me of that African proverb that says, ‘If you think you are too small to make a difference, you have never spent the night in a room with a mosquito’.
There were some other interesting presentations as well. One student talked about Boyan Slat, the Dutch teenager who designed a system to clean up ocean plastic. Did you know he was only 16 when he came up with that idea and just 19 when he founded ‘The Ocean Cleanup’ company and got people to fund his campaign to try to turn the tide on plastic pollution? Apparently they’re currently trialling a prototype in the Great Pacific garbage patch.
Another presentation talked about how back in 1976 the then 14-year old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci - the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of
10.0 points for her performance - paved the way for today’s Simone Biles with her ground- breaking Olympic routines. Though I’m not sure if that counts as literally shaping the future or was a bit of a stretch!

Ton e-mail sur ta peur de retourner à l'école m'a bien fait rire. Après toutes ces années passées à enseigner, tu ne peux quand même pas encore redouter le début de l'année scolaire autant que lorsque tu étais de l'autre côté du bureau ? Bref, je suis flatté que tu m'aies demandé de choisir des idées pour un projet amusant à faire avec tes élèves de terminale. Voilà celui que j'ai fait avec mon groupe en fin d'année dernière. On discutait de toutes les choses terribles qui se passent un peu partout et de la façon dont tout part en cacahuètes, etc. Sachant que cette génération d'étudiants est la génération dite « snowflake » (flocon de neige en anglais), ou « millenial », et que les flocons de neige ont le pouvoir d'éteindre le feu, je leur ai demandé de faire une présentation sur la manière dont les jeunes peuvent et changent le monde (pour le mieux, bien sûr !).
Comme on pouvait s'y attendre, Greta Thunberg était le premier nom sur la plupart des lèvres. (Mon ordinateur ne cesse de corriger son nom en « Great Thunberg », un signe certain d'intelligence artificielle si tu veux mon avis !) C'est dur d'imaginer qu'une enfant de 15 ans puisse passer aussi rapidement d'inconnue à activiste climatique de renom. Ça m'a donné tellement d'espoir d'entendre autant d'élèves parler de sa grève étudiante et de ce qu'elle leur inspire : agir contre l'urgence climatique. Son message selon lequel on n'est jamais trop petit pour faire la différence semble avoir fait son effet. Ça me rappelle un proverbe Africain qui dit : « Si tu penses être trop petit pour faire la différence, tu n'as jamais passé la nuit avec un moustique dans ta chambre. »
Il y avait d'autres présentations intéressantes aussi. Un étudiant a parlé de Boyan Slat, l'adolescent Néerlandais qui a mis au point un système de nettoyage de plastique des océans. Est-ce que tu savais qu'il a imaginé ce système à 16 ans et créé son entreprise « The Ocean Cleanup » trois ans plus tard, incitant les gens à financer sa campagne pour inverser la tendance en matière de pollution plastique ? Apparemment ils sont en train de tester un prototype dans le vortex de déchets du Pacifique nord.
Une autre présentation parlait de Nadia Comaneci, cette gymnaste Roumaine de 14 ans qui, en 1976, devenait la première dans l'histoire des Jeux Olympiques à recevoir la note parfaite de
10.0 points pour sa performance, ouvrant la voie à Simone Biles que l'on connaît aujourd'hui, aux routines Olympiques révolutionnaires. Même si j'hésite entre le fait que cela façonne le futur ou que ce saut ait été trop périlleux !
