ABSTRACT
The violence against women is a public health issue and is a sociocultural problem that
is present in many communities around the world. Despite being a crime of serious
violation of human rights, this violence continues to repeatedly victimize thousands of
women. Violence against women is understood as any action or conduct based on
gender that causes physical, sexual, psychological or death-related harm, occurring in
both the public and private spheres. Information disseminated through the media in
general can act as shapers of social attitudes, being an informal means of education, and
may influence the way of living of the subjects. Given this, the objective of this paper is
to clarify, through printed newspapers in the city of Feira de Santana-Ba, how violence
against women is characterized in these journals, as well as to draw a profile of the
victims and their aggressors. The research is qualitative and quantitative of the
documentary and descriptive type, 1.343 journals were consulted through a research
instrument built for the study. As a research method we used content analysis by
Laurence Bardin. The results indicate that in most cases individuals are from a less
favored economic class and violence is committed mainly by the partner or former
intimate partner. In addition, the journals do not provide much information regarding
the victims and especially the perpetrator, which makes it difficult to construct
sociodemographic profiles.
