For many, the experience of San Francisco’s hills is what they remember most about their time in this city.
These days, there are more than 40 different named hills in San Francisco, but when it was founded, there were only seven.
One of the first, and now best known, is Telegraph Hill, because of the soaring structure on top of it: Coit Tower. It’s been standing tall here for more than 80 years, thanks to one San Franciscan’s love for her city.
As soon as Lillie Hitchcock Coit arrived in San Francisco at the age of eight, she fell in love with her new home. She went on to travel the world, but always chose to come back here to this city.
