We would however propose to implement active ground support and improve the development techniques in order to increase the advance rate.
We are aware that a contractor is undertaking the development at this moment with jumbos and presume that the measures described above are implemented if not already done.
We have changed the design for the -560 level as the mineralization should mostly be mined from the -640 Level.
By using trackless equipment, it is possible to create a ramp from the -560 level, accessing the -640 level.
This reduces the development requirements for the central drives.
The -560/640 level is designed as a twin level/decline with cross-cuts every 100 m.
These cross-cuts are used as stockpiles during development, reducing the time to clean the face.
During production, the cross-cuts can be used for passing-bays, infrastructure locations, storage facilities, and as local sumps after deepening.
The twin development allows for primary ventilation to be carried close to the development face, which is a more important requirement when using trackless equipment.
A large advantage of the trackless equipment is the ability to follow the orebody below the 640 Level and achieve a higher resource recovery with the same layout.
We have included trackless access between North and South area via declines and the Central drive which allows personnel and machinery to move more freely in the mine.

Основным связующий «Зенита» должен был стать Лукаш Жигадло, однако на одной из первых тренировок польский легионер получил тяжелую травму голеностопа и его в экстренном порядке заменил опытный серб Никола Грбича, который присоединился к команде за несколько дней до матча за Суперкубок страны с «Белогорьем». Казанцы по ходу встречи вели 2:0, но проиграли, отдав соперникам последний из национальных трофеев.
«Зенит» попал в Лигу чемпионов благодаря wild card и при жеребьёвке угодил в «группу смерти» – к действующему победителю турнира «Локомотиву» и «Мачерате». Тем не менее, казанцы вышли в плей-офф с первого места в квартете. В «раунде 12-ти» «Зенит», как и годом ранее, был сильнее «Берлина» (3:0, 3:0), а затем столь же уверенно прошел итальянскую «Пьяченцу».
«Финал четырёх» Лиги чемпионов в Анкаре для казанского клуба стал самым неудачным в истории. В полуфинале «Зенит» проиграл «Белогорью» (1:3), а в матче за третье место с тем же счетом уступил польскому клубу «Ястшембски». Еще раньше, в январе, казанская команда проиграла своему извечному сопернику «Белогорью» еще и в полуфинале Кубка России.

В полуфинале команда Владимира Алекно со счетом 3:1 обыграла «Белогорье», а в решающем матче одолела новосибирский «Локомотив» 3:0! «Зенит» в шестой раз выиграл чемпионат России и гарантировал себе выступление в Лиге чемпионов.
2014/15
Юбилейный 15-й сезон стал лучшим в истории казанского клуба. Впервые казанская команда взяла «Большой шлем», выиграв все главные турниры сезона. В конце декабря подопечные Владимира Алекно завоевали Кубок страны, в конце марта выиграли Лигу чемпионов, а 28 апреля защитили титул сильнейшей команды России.
В регулярном чемпионате «Зенит» занял второе место, отстав от «Белогорья» всего на 2 очка. В первых раундах плей-офф «Зенит» уверенно прошел «Факел» (2-0) и московское «Динамо» (3-0), а в «золотой» серии встретился с давним и принципиальным соперником – «Белогорьем». Решающим в серии стал второй поединок, состоявшийся в Белгороде. Казанцы проигрывали в нем 0:2, но сумели показать характер и одержать волевую победу 3:2. На своей площадке «Зенит» выиграл третий матч 3:0, и четвертый – 3:2. Оба матча в Казани собрали в казанском Центре волейбола аншлаги.
В «Финале четырех» Лиги чемпионов, который прошел в Берлине, «Зенит» сначала обыграл хозяев турнира (3:1), а в решающем матче – польскую «Ресовию» (3:0). Три игрока казанской команды (нападающие Вильфредо Леон и Максим Михайлов, а также либеро Теодор Салпаров) попали в символическую сборную турнира, а кубинец Леон также был признан MVP «Финала четырех».
В «Финале шести» Кубка России казанцы все четыре матча выиграли со счетом 3:0, в том числе финал у новосибирского «Локомотива». Таким образом, «Зенит» вернул себе трофей, который не покорялся команде с 2009 года.
Стоит отметить, что по ходу сезона «Зенит» выдал уникальную для российского волейбола 31-матчевую победную серию.

2015/16
Сезон стал самым успешным в истории казанского клуба: команда Владимира Алекно завоевала сразу четыре трофея, но триумф всё равно оказался неполным – один титул казанцы все-таки упустили. В октябре в жаркой Бразилии они в финале клубного чемпионата мира со счетом 1:3 проиграли хозяевам площадки, волейболистам «Крузейро». Тем не менее, Вильфредо Леон, Максим Михайлов и Александр Гуцалюк попали в символическую сборную турнира.
Сразу после возвращения «Зенит» завоевал Суперкубок страны, который был совмещен с первым туром чемпионата страны. В присутствии 4 тысяч зрителей казанцы с «сухим» счетом обыграли «Белогорье». Всего в чемпионате России «Зенит» выиграл 25 из 26 матчей и установил клубный рекорд – 96% побед в суперлиге за сезон. В интересах сборной чемпион страны-2016 определялся по итогам регулярного чемпионата и казанцы добыли титул еще за четыре тура до финиша турнира. Единственное поражение игроки «Зенита» потерпели в домашнем матче 4-го тура с «Газпром-Югрой» (2:3).
В декабре подопечные Владимира Алекно добыли Кубок России. В полуфинале они одержали вторую в сезоне волевую победу над московским «Динамо», снова отыгравшись со счета 0:2 по партиям, а в решающем матче сокрушили «Белогорье» – 3:0.
Завоевав все три национальных трофея, «Зенит» бросил все силы на европейский фронт и в плей-офф Лиги чемпионов поочередно выбил из борьбы три польских клуба – «Лотос» из Гданьска в «раунде 12-ти», «Скру» из Белхатова – в «раунде 6-ти» и «Ресовию» из Жешува – в полуфинале турнира. В финале с итальянским «Трентино» казанцы проигрывали 0:2, однако вновь проявили характер и одержали волевую победу, в четвертый раз в истории став победителями главного клубного турнира Европы. «Zenit» got a place in League of Champions with a fine of wild card and was trapped on qualifying draw was in “Death Squad” – to a current champion «Lokomotiv» and «Macerata». Nevertheless, Kazan team got through to the play-off from the first place in four players band. In «round of 12» «Zenit» was stronger than «Berlina» (3:0, 3:0), same as in previous year, and then with same confidence left Italian «Piacenza» behind.
«Final Four» of League of Champions in Ankara for Kazan club became the unluckiest in history. In semi-final «Zenit» lost on points to «Belogorye» (1:3), and lost to «Jastshembski» Polish club with a same score in bronze medal match. Previously, the team from Kazan lost its archenemy «Belogorye», but in semi-final of Russian Cup in January.
«Zenit» has lost only once during a whole regular Championship and came to the fore, directly to «Final six». Kazanians lost their top goalscorer Maxim mikhailov by injury, than, already in Ekaterinburg captain of the team Alexander Volkov was fallen into trap and transported to hospital. It seemed, that without two leading players, it will be difficult for «Zenit» to reach the podium, but the team has shown a very solid character and this situation only made it well-built. In semi-final Vladimir Alekno‘s team won in points 3:1 with «Belogorye», and outmuscled Novosibirsk «Lokomotiv» 3:0 in a decider match! «Zenit» won the Russian Campionship for the sixth time and locked up a place in League of Champions.
2014/15
Jubeilee fifteenth season became the best in history for Kazanian club. For the first time Kazan team took «Grand Slam», having won all major events of a season. Vladimir Alekno charges made Country Cup in the end of December, won the League of Champions in the end of March and defended the best team silverware of Russia on 28 of April. «Zenit» made the second place in regular championship, coming back with only 2 points to «Belogorye». Confidently went through «Fakel» (2-0) and Moscow «Dinamo» (3-0) in the first rounds of play-off, «Zenit» met an old and principal opponent – «Belogorye» on a «golden» stage. Deciding in serie was a second battle, which was held in Belgorod. At first, Kazanians were losing 0:2, but they overcame troubles and won a willing victory 3:2. «Zenit» won the third match 3:0, and fourth – 3:2 on its site. Both matches at the Center of volleyball made sold outs in Kazan.
In the «Final four» of the League of Champions, which was held in Berlin, «Zenit» made a locals of event (3:1) firstly, than in decider match made – Polish «Resovia» (3:0). Three players of Kazanian team (strikers Wilfredo Leon and Maxim Mikhaylov, sweeper Theodore Salparov) got in symbolic all-team of event, and Cuban Leon also was granted with MVP of «Final four».
In the «Final of six» of Russian Cup Kazan team won all four matches with a score 3:0, including the final with Novosibirsk «Lokomotiv». Whence, «Zenit» got back a trophy, which have not been submitted to a team since 2009.
It stands to mention, that during a season «Zenit» made a unique for Russian volleyball 31-matches victorious serie.

Immediately after arrival «Zenit» won Country Community shield, which was combined with the first tour of country’s championship. More than 4 thousand of fans were eyewitnesses of Kazanians whitewash win of «Belogorye» club. During Russian Championship, «Zenit» won 25 from 26 of matches in total and made a club record – 96% wins in a one season of super-league. In the interests of the national team, a country’s champion -2016 was determined by the results of the regular championship and Kazan team got the title four tours before the finish of the tournament. «Zenit» failed to win only once with «Gazprom-Urgeu» (2:3) in home match of fourth-tour.
Vladimir Alekno’s charges gained Russian Cup in December. In semi-final they scored the second willing victory in season over Moscow «Dinamo», again chased the game with a score 0:2 by sets, and in the final match they crushed «Belogorye» – 3:0.
Gained all national trophies, «Zenit» hurled all effort into European front and play-off of League of Champions alternately knocked out three Polish clubs – «LOTOS» from Gransk in «Round of 12», «Skru» from Belchatow – in «Round of 6» and «Resave» from Rzeszow – in a tournament’s semi-final. In the final with Italian «Trentino» Kazan team were losing 0:2, but again showed character and scored a comeback victory for the fourth time in history became the winners of the main European club tournament.Leon was named the tournament’s MVP and best outside hitter for the second year in a row, and Mikhailov – the best diagonal player.

Вот какой рассказ появился в октябре 1916 года в японском литературном ежемесячнике «Тюо корон».
Профессор Токийского императорского университета, специалист в области колониальной политики, сидел на веранде в плетеном кресле и читал «Заметки о драматургии» знаменитого шведского писателя Стриндберга. Странно было подумать, что всего каких-нибудь пятьдесят лет назад обо всем этом и мечтать не приходилось – ни об императорском университете в Токио, ни о колониальной политике, ни о проблемах европейской драматургии. Прогресс налицо. И особенно заметен прогресс в материальной области. Отгремели пушки отечественных броненосцев в Цусимском проливе; страна покрылась сетью железных дорог; распространяются превентивные средства из рыбьего пузыря... Но вот в области духовной намечается скорее упадок, а профессор лелеял мечту облегчить взаимопонимание между народами Запада и своим народом. Он даже знал, на какой основе должно строиться это взаимопонимание. Бусидо, «путь воина», это специфическое достояние Японии, прославленная система морали и поведения самурайства, сложившаяся шесть веков назад. Конечно, не все в ней годится для целей профессора, но основное – требование жесткой самодисциплины и добродетельной жизни – явно сближает дух бусидо с духом христианства.
Профессор листал Стриндберга и размышлял о судьбах японской культуры, когда ему доложили о приходе посетительницы. В приемной ему представилась почтенная, изящно одетая женщина – мать одного из студентов. Усадив посетительницу за стол и предложив ей чаю, профессор осведомился о здоровье ее сына. К его величайшему смущению, выяснилось, что юноша умер и что гостья пришла передать профессору его последнее «прости». Некоторое время они обменивались малозначительными репликами, причем профессор заметил одно странное обстоятельство: ни на облике, ни на поведении дамы смерть родного сына не отразилась. Глаза ее были сухие. Голос звучал совершенно обыденно. Иногда она даже улыбалась как будто. Профессор поразился, от холодности и спокойствия соотечественницы ему стало не по себе. И тут произошло вот что. Случайно уронив веер, профессор полез за ним под стол и увидел руки гостьи, сложенные у нее на коленях. Эти руки дрожали, и тонкие пальцы изо всех сил мяли и комкали носовой платок, словно стремясь изодрать его в клочья. Да, гостья улыбалась только лицом, всем же существом своим она рыдала.
Проводив гостью, профессор вновь уселся в кресло на веранде и взял Стриндберга. Но ему не читалось. Мысли его были полны героическим поведением этой дамы, и он растроганно и с гордостью думал о том, что дух бусидо, дух жестокой и благородной воинской самодисциплины, поистине вошел в плоть и кровь японского народа. В эту минуту рассеянный взгляд его упал на раскрытую страницу книги.
«В пору моей молодости, – писал Стриндберг, – много говорили о носовом платке госпожи Хайберг... Это был прием двойной игры, заключавшийся в том, что, улыбаясь лицом, руками она рвала платок. Теперь мы называем его дурным вкусом...»
Профессор растерялся и оскорбился. Оскорбился не за даму, а за свою взлелеянную простодушную схему, в которую так четко укладывалось это происшествие. И ему в голову не пришло, что героическое поведение гостьи могло объясниться причинами, к которым пресловутые понятия военно-феодальной чести не имеют никакого отношения...
Так примерно выглядит откомментированное содержание одного из ранних рассказов Рюноскэ Акутагавы – «Носовой платок».
Невооруженному глазу заметна брезгливая усмешка автора по поводу мечтаний злополучного профессора сделаться идеологом японской культуры на основе бусидо, этой действительно специфической смеси клановых японских традиций с плохо переваренным конфуцианством. Еще в последние годы XIX века, сразу после окончания японо-китайской войны, заправилы империи недвусмысленно потребовали от отечественной литературы создания так называемых «комэй-сёсэцу» – «светозарных произведений», проникнутых казенным оптимизмом и прославляющих воинственность и великодушие средневекового и современного самурайства. Толпа бездарных полуграмотных писак бросилась заполнять книжные рынки страны бесконечными вариациями на тему о верности сюзерену и о кровавой мести, о вспоротых животах и о срубленных головах, о поединках на мечах и о лихих штыковых атаках, и в унисон им, только не так грубо и не так прямолинейно, заворковали о величии бусидо, о благотворности бусидо, о назревшей необходимости воскрешения бусидо идеологические дилетанты с профессорских кафедр. В далекой Европе гремели пушки и лились реки крови, каблуки японских патрулей стучали по кривым улочкам взятого у немцев Циндао, империя готовилась к большим колониальным захватам. Неудивительно, что в эти дни думающий и широко эрудированный писатель (а Акутагава, как мы увидим, был именно таким) жестоко осмеял мечтательного либерала, усмотревшего духовное сходство между возрождающимся к жизни кодексом профессиональных убийц и плачевно дискредитировавшим себя христианством.
Но давайте проанализируем рассказ более тщательно. Итак, некий профессор, специалист по колониальной политике и приверженец бусидо, читает Стриндберга и предается размышлениям о способах преодоления духовного застоя в своей стране. Затем он беседует с женщиной, недавно потерявшей сына, и случайно обнаруживает, что ее внешнее спокойствие есть только маска, а на самом деле она мучается безутешным горем. Он приходит в восхищение – не столько от героизма гостьи, сколько от полного, как ему представляется, соответствия между ее поведением и бездарной умозрительной идеей. По нашему мнению, если бы речь в рассказе шла только об осмеянии идеологического дилетантизма, этого было бы вполне достаточно. Ну а Стриндберг? Для чего автору понадобилось противопоставлять сценический прием госпожи Хайберг поведению гордой матери? Не зря же он так смело ввел в рассказ элемент случайного совпадения: профессор натыкается на пресловутый абзац из Стриндберга чуть ли не сразу после случая с носовым платком. Видимо, дело обстоит не так просто, и у рассказа есть «второе дно», не столь очевидное, как первое, но наверняка не менее важное.
Действительно, концовка рассказа производит странное впечатление. Читатель далеко не сразу осознает, какая проблема всплывает вдруг из нее. Мономан-профессор смутно ощущает что-то неясное, что грозит разрушить безмятежную гармонию его мира. Пытаясь объяснить себе это ощущение, он готов заподозрить Стриндберга в попытке осмеять бусидо. Он даже готов оправдываться: «Сценический прием... и вопросы повседневной морали, разумеется, вещи разные». И все это мимо цели, но на то он и мономан. Если бы он дал себе труд отвлечься от любимой идеи, он сумел бы понять, что парадокс, с которым столкнул его случай, лежит совсем в другой плоскости понятий и представлений. Он сумел бы увидеть проблему такой, какой поставил ее перед читателем (и перед собой) автор. Проблему соотношения жизни и искусства.
В глазах знатоков театра сценический прием госпожи Хайберг давно уже стал банальностью. Но сотни тысяч, миллионы женщин и до и после госпожи Хайберг при разных обстоятельствах и по разным причинам стискивали зубы, комкали носовые платки, впивались ногтями в ладони, чтобы не вскрикнуть, не разрыдаться, не показать своей боли, и никто никогда не называл это «дурным вкусом». И совершенно не важно, почему они это делали: по врожденной ли гордости или по твердости характера, пусть даже из приверженности кодексу бусидо. В данном случае не в этом дело. Дело в диковинной метаморфозе, которую претерпевает восприятие нами человеческого поведения, когда оно переносится из реальной жизни на сцену, на экран или на страницы книг. Какова психологическая природа этой метаморфозы? В чем секрет адекватного перевода с бесконечно разнообразного языка бесконечно разнообразной жизни на язык искусства?
Вот в этом, как нам кажется, и состоит глубинная суть, «второе дно» рассказа «Носовой платок». Это и есть главная его проблема, которую не то что решить – просто увидеть не дано профессорам – приверженцам бусидо, и эта проблема всю жизнь терзала странную и мудрую душу японского писателя Рюноскэ Акутагавы, покончившего самоубийством в 1927 году в возрасте тридцати пяти лет.
Он родился в Токио утром 1 марта 1892 года, или, по старинному времяисчислению, в час Дракона дня Дракона месяца Дракона, и потому его нарекли Рюноскэ, ибо «смысловой» иероглиф этого имени «рю» означает «дракон».
Когда ему исполнилось девять месяцев, его мать сошла с ума, и младенца, по закону и по обычаю, передали на усыновление и воспитание в бездетную семью старшего брата матери, начальника строительного отдела Токийской префектуры Акутагавы Митиаки. Так маленький Рюноскэ утратил фамилию Ниихара и получил фамилию Акутагава, покинул вульгарные кварталы Кёбаси и дом невежественного нувориша из далекой западной провинции и поселился в старинном Ходзё, районе мрачноватых эдоских особняков, единственным сыном коренного столичного жителя, большого ценителя и знатока японской культуры.
В небольшом предисловии не место подробностям детских и юношеских лет писателя. Скажем только, что первоначальную – и весьма основательную – культурную закалку он получает в доме своего приемного отца; что учится он прекрасно и со школьных лет увлекается чтением японской и китайской классики; что в одиннадцать лет он редактирует и оформляет рукописный журнал, который «издает» совместно с одноклассниками, а с четырнадцати лет принимается читать Франса и Ибсена; и что в двадцать лет, учась на литературном отделении так называемой высшей школы, без памяти и без разбора погружается в чтение европейских поэтов, прозаиков и философов, в том числе Бодлера, Стриндберга и Бергсона.
В 1913 году Акутагава поступил на отделение английской литературы Токийского императорского университета и вскоре взялся за первые опыты в беллетристике. Но прежде чем говорить об этом, следует хотя бы в самых общих чертах представить себе, как был организован литературный мир Японии того времени и в каком состоянии находилась тогда японская литература.
Как это ни странно, в молодой буржуазной Японии, где все, начиная со структуры правительственного аппарата и кончая формой головных уборов железнодорожных носильщиков, дотошно копировалось с европейских образцов, в Японии, напряженно стремившейся сравняться с Западом и в материальном и в духовном плане, организация литературного мира сложилась первоначально в чисто феодальном стиле. Первые мастера новой литературы совершенно уподобились мастерам-ремесленникам – они объединялись в подобие цехов или кланов, обзаводились подмастерьями и учениками, которых нещадно эксплуатировали, стояли друг за друга стеной и яростно отбивали все попытки посягнуть на их прерогативы. А прерогативы эти были немалые; в частности, все дороги в литературу, то есть в центральные литературные ежемесячники, были в их руках, и проскочить через эти заставы без задержки могли либо только одиночки, имевшие протекцию непосредственно в журналах или располагавшие достаточными средствами, либо студенты университетов, удостоившиеся чести быть принятыми в соответствующий цех сразу же после первого произведения. Всем остальным не оставалось ничего иного, кроме как «войти в ворота», то есть идти на выучку и в услужение к литературному шефу.
Но мы не хотим сказать, что такая система имела только отрицательные стороны. Непосредственное шефство маститого писателя над начинающим автором, если отвлечься от феодального антуража, приносило, несомненно, громадную пользу. Не надо забывать, что начинающий стремился «в ворота» того мастера, которого глубоко уважал, перед которым преклонялся. В стране, где не существовало (да и сейчас, кажется, не существует) издательской редактуры в нашем смысле этого слова, кисть шефа, смоченная красной тушью, могла сделать и делала много доброго в рукописи, принесенной за пазухой. К тому же такая организация литературы как рабочая система продержалась в чистом виде сравнительно недолго, и к тому времени, когда в литературу вошел Рюноскэ Акутагава, она приняла уже гораздо более цивилизованные формы. И когда в 1915 году он, автор всего двух рассказов, с бешено бьющимся сердцем вступил в кабинет своего любимого писателя Сосэки Нацумэ, ему не пришлось, конечно, ни таскать воду, ни бегать в соседнюю лавочку за овощами для кухни.
Тут уместно задаться вопросом: для чего Акутагава пошел в ученики – хотя бы и к такому мастеру, как Сосэки Нацумэ? Да, десятилетие работы Нацумэ в литературе называют «годами Нацумэ». Да, рассказ «Ворота Расёмон» привлек внимание и удостоился похвалы Нацумэ. Но двери в литературу были и без того широко распахнуты перед Акутагавой. Он принадлежал к университетскому литературному клану и активно участвовал в его печатном органе «Синейте». Его рассказы «Маска хёттоко» и «Расёмон» были опубликованы в солидном ежемесячнике «Тэйкоку бунгаку». У него уже складывались, как мы увидим, свои оригинальные взгляды на роль и задачи литературы. И тем не менее он «входит в ворота» Сосэки Нацумэ.
В 1885 году литературовед-англист Сёё Цубоути опубликовал трактат «Сущность романа», во многом определивший характер новой японской литературы. Он призвал писателей отказаться от принципов традиционной японской поэтики с ее стремлением к дерзкой метафоре и острой фабуле, предложил пользоваться исключительно европейской «техникой описания» и сформулировал новый литературный метод «сядзицусюги» («отражать как есть»). Этот метод предполагал фотографическую точность изображения всего, что фиксирует взгляд писателя, причем в первую голову – изображения человеческих чувств. Казалось бы, Сёё предлагал новой японской литературе именно то, чего ей не хватало: верность действительности. Ведь недаром этот метод был подхвачен с таким восторгом, и недаром его автора почтительно-восторженно называли «колоколом на рассвете». На самом же деле этот трактат явился скорее спасательным кругом, брошенным японским беллетристам, которые буквально захлебывались в кипучей разноголосице разнообразных и зачастую противоречивых западных влияний. Все, чего западная литературная традиция достигла за столетия эволюционного развития, обрушилось на Японию буквально в одночасье: и романтизм, и сентиментализм, и реализм, и натурализм, и первые декадентские и модернистские ухищрения. Все это надлежало переварить как можно скорее и выбрать или скомпилировать то, что, во-первых, соответствовало бы и было необходимым тогдашнему обществу, а во-вторых, что оказалось бы «под силу» нуворишам от литературы.
Принцип «сядзицусюги» устраивал многих. Воспринят он был с неописуемым простодушием: описывай все, что перед глазами, и не надо заботиться ни о занимательности, ни о сюжете, ни о стилистике, и, уж конечно, не имеет никакого смысла анализировать увиденное, искать его связи с политическим, экономическим, социальным состоянием страны. Отражай как есть.
Разумеется, лучшие писатели восприняли этот принцип не столь буквально. Роман «Плывущее облако» Фтабатэя «показал изнанку мэйдзийской цивилизации». Ратовал за реализм, пронизанный идеалами, поэт конца века Тококу Китамура. Страшно писала о судьбе японской женщины Итиё Хигути. В первое десятилетие нового века, когда школьник Акутагава взахлеб зачитывался Франсом и Ибсеном, гневно гремели произведения Рока Токутоми, Тосона Симадзаки, Катай Таямы. Но основная тенденция была уже определена. Метод «сядзицусюги» оформился в японский натурализм, и вскоре тот же Катай Таяма выдвинул принципы «плоскостного» и «неприкрашенного изображения». Смысл этих принципов сводился к декларации: «Мы изгоняем из искусства все развлекательное; изгоняем все, что относится к мастерству; изгоняем все, что относится к идеалам». Принцип жесткой фотографичности логически привел к утверждению, что достоверно писатель может описать только себя самого. Писателям предложили публично раздеться. Так возникла эгобеллетристика, и на страницах журналов и книг предстали вывернутые наизнанку души и постели известных мастеров литературы.
Разумеется, имела место и оппозиция. В серую толщу унылых бессюжетных писаний, начисто лишенных настроений и здравого смысла, сверкающим лезвием вонзилась сатира Сосэки Нацумэ «Ваш покорный слуга кот». Весь богатейший арсенал японской и европейской поэтики, все известные в мировой литературе приемы сатиры, юмора, пародии, гротеска бросил он против застойного болота «плоскостного изображения». И при всем том это был настоящий полновесный реализм, реализм в высшем смысле этого слова, изображение жизни в ее социальных и психологических противоречиях...
Но одна ласточка не делает весны. «Ваш покорный слуга кот» появился в 1905 году, за ним последовало еще несколько повестей и романов Нацумэ. И все. Японская «натуральная школа» продолжала свое победное шествие, брезгливо сторонясь и «светозарной литературы», и большой общественной проблематики. Молодой Рюноскэ Акутагава с тревогой и недоверием следил за ее развитием. Все это было совсем не то, что он любил в литературе и что хотел сделать в литературе. И он пошел к великому мастеру. Нам кажется, он сделал это потому, что испытывал потребность раз и навсегда перед собой и перед своими коллегами по университетскому клану отмежеваться от натурализма, от «плоскостного изображения», от эгобеллетристики. И еще, вероятно, он искал у Нацумэ подтверждение своей правоты. Можно представить себе, как Сосэки Нацумэ, прочитав очередной его рассказ, говорит, одобрительно кивая: «Ты на правильном пути, Акутагава Рюноскэ. Ты прав».
В «Кондзяку моногатари» («Стародавние повести»), литературном памятнике конца XI века, есть короткий рассказ о провинциальном воре, который в надежде поживиться пробрался в блестящую столицу и с досады ограбил в воротной башне Расёмон старуху-нищенку. В наше время благодаря Акутагаве (и успехам японской кинематографии) название Расёмон известно чуть ли не каждому культурному человеку в мире, а началось это, должно быть, с того, что двадцатичетырехлетний студент после долгих раздумий о своей теме в литературе, о своих литературных принципах и о своем собственном литературном методе пришел приблизительно к таким выводам. Моей темой должна быть бесконечная вселенная человеческого духа, человеческая психология; мои принципы сводятся к тому, что литература есть искусство, литература должна быть искусством, что бы там ни бубнили всеядные приверженцы простоты и безыскусности, убежденные противники мастерства; мой метод...
Вот тут Акутагава сделал свое первое открытие. Цубоути был, разумеется, прав, когда писал в своей «Сущности романа»: «Главное – описание чувства, потом уже нравов и обычаев... Чувство – это мозг произведения». Это правильно – объектом литературы должна быть психология человека. Правильно и то, что нравы и обычаи имеют второстепенное значение. Но термин «описание» легко влечет за собой, что и показала практика, представление о бездумном, пассивном копировании. Писатель должен быть активен в отношении объекта своей работы. Не описанием чувств должна заниматься литература, утверждал Акутагава, а исследованием, анализом психологии. Но анализ предполагает инструмент. Что может быть инструментом литературного анализа психического мира? Только одно: событие. Подобно тому как крупинка катализатора, брошенная в однородный мертвый раствор, вызывает в этом растворе бурную химическую реакцию, так и событие приводит в движение спящую в обычном состоянии человеческую психику, провоцирует ее на самые разнообразные проявления в поступках, анатомирует ее, выворачивает наизнанку. Событием может быть и вселенская катастрофа – например, война; и личное несчастье – например, неразделенная любовь; и подлая мелочь жизни – например, приобретение новой шинели. Выбор события – это дело автора, выбор зависит от задачи, которую ставит перед собой автор, от личности героя произведения, от множества других факторов и является в конечном счете актом литературного мастерства. Так или примерно так рассуждал Рюноскэ Акутагава и принялся претворять свое открытие в слово.
Он пишет рассказ о человеке, который питал такое отвращение к злу, что готов был скорее умереть с голоду, чем встать на путь преступления. При виде старой нищенки, совершавшей мерзость, его абстрактная ненависть к злу логически перевоплотилась в ненависть к преступнице, а ненависть к преступнице столь же логически вылилась в преступление против нее: он, так ненавидевший зло, ограбил старуху. Старинный анекдот о воре, ограбившем старуху-нищенку в воротах Расёмон, явился той самой крупинкой катализатора, которая развернула плоское течение психики частного обывателя в яркий психологический этюд.
Характерно, что Акутагава сразу же демонстративно отказался от авторства в отношении событий. Сюжетные завязки его новелл, рисующих парадоксы и внезапные повороты человеческой психики, восходят к средневековым анекдотам и к эпизодам из военно-феодального эпоса. Он стремился еще и еще раз подчеркнуть, что быт и нравы, время действия и обстановка не играют для его анализа никакой роли. Психология человека, рассуждал Акутагава, не изменилась за все эти века, и он вправе анатомировать ее на фоне сколько угодно гротескных обстоятельств, лишь бы они помогали делу.
Следует сразу сказать, что он переоценил своих литературных оппонентов. Простодушные коллеги ничего не поняли в его методе и принялись наперебой упрекать его в ретроградстве, в стремлении уйти от действительности в прошлое, в болезненном пристрастии к старине. Вначале он презрительно отмалчивался, но в конце концов его заставили объясниться.
«Я беру тему, – писал он, – и решаю воплотить ее в рассказе. Чтобы дать этой теме наиболее сильную художественную выразительность, мне нужно какое-нибудь необычайное событие. Но мне не удается рассказать об этом необычайном событии, – именно потому, что оно необычайное, – так, словно оно произошло в сегодняшней, в нашей Японии. Если я все же пишу наперекор всему, не считаясь с тем, что мне это не удается, я, как правило, вызываю у читателя чувство неестественности. Единственное средство избегнуть такого затруднения, это... отнести событие в прошлое, рассказать о нем, как о произошедшем давным-давно в старину... В моих рассказах, в которых материал взят из старинных хроник, действие развертывается в далеком прошлом большей частью именно под влиянием этой необходимости. Таким образом, хотя я пишу о старине, к старине как таковой у меня пристрастия нет». (Перевод Н. Фельдман.)
В том обстоятельстве, что Акутагава начал использовать свой метод на материале старинных хроник, можно усмотреть влияние квазиисторических рассказов Франса. Но были у него предшественники и в Японии. Акинари Уэда, выдающийся писатель второй половины XVIII века, писал в предисловии к циклу своих новелл «Луна в тумане»: «Когда читаешь их сочинения (произведения классиков светской литературы Японии и Китая. – А. С.), то видишь, что сочинения эти полны необыкновенных образов, и хоть смехотворны и бессвязны они, но похожи на правду, фраза за фразой текут плавно и увлекают читателя. Настоящее можно узреть в глубокой древности». Как бы то ни было, «необычайные события», описанные в старину, стали в произведениях Акутагавы надежным инструментом для исследования механизмов человеческой психологии.
Особенный интерес представляет в этом отношении рассказ «Бататовая каша». В основу его тоже взят древний анекдот о том, как бедный самурай всю жизнь мечтал «нажраться» бататовой каши и как он ею объелся, когда сильные мира сего потехи ради предоставили ему эту возможность. Но Акутагава построил на этом незамысловатом анекдоте откровенный парафраз «Шинели» Гоголя. Аналог Акакия Акакиевича, самурай в мелких чинах служит при дворе могущественного феодала. В полном соответствии с общественным положением Акакия Акакиевича он – маленький человек, нищий и до крайности забитый. Как и Акакий Акакиевич, вид он собой являет самый неприглядный, одежды носит самые заношенные и, разумеется, служит для всех окружающих объектом самых грубых насмешек и издевательств. Мало того, словно бы не удовлетворяясь этими общими чертами сходства между своим героем и Акакием Акакиевичем, Акутагава вводит в рассказ абзац, который уже совершенно недвусмысленно указывает читателю на первоисточник. У Гоголя мы читаем: «Только если уж слишком была невыносима шутка... он произносил: «Оставьте меня, зачем вы меня обижаете?» И что-то странное заключалось в словах и в голосе, с каким они были произнесены. В нем слышалось что-то такое преклоняющее на жалость, что один молодой человек... который, по примеру других, позволил было себе посмеяться над ним, вдруг остановился, как будто пронзенный, и с тех пор как будто все переменилось перед ним и показалось в другом виде». Акутагава пишет: «Лишь когда издевательства переходили все пределы... тогда он странно морщил лицо – то ли от плача, то ли от смеха – и говорил: «Что уж вы, право, нельзя же так...» Те, кто видел его лицо или слышал его голос, ощущали вдруг укол жалости... Это чувство, каким бы смутным оно ни было, проникало на мгновение им в самое сердце. Правда, мало было таких, у которых оно сохранялось хоть сколько-нибудь долго. И среди всех немногих был один рядовой самурай, совсем молодой человек... Конечно, вначале он тоже вместе со всеми безо всякой причины презирал красноносого гои. Но как-то однажды он услыхал голос, говоривший: «Что уж вы, право, нельзя же так...» И с тех пор эти слова не шли у него из головы. Гои в его глазах стал совсем другой личностью...» Наконец, аналогию завершает масштаб сокровенных желаний героев: Акакий Акакиевич «питался духовно, нося в мыслях своих вечную идею будущей шинели», а красноносый бедолага самурай мечтал «нажраться» бататовой каши.
На этом сюжетная аналогия заканчивается и начинается эксперимент. Акакий Акакиевич гибнет, потому что невозможно оказалось перенести потерю шинели, вожделенной цели и смысла бытия. Маленький человек вырастает в трагическую фигуру. Ведь не случись несчастья, он прожил бы отпущенные ему дни и во благовремение скончался бы, тихо, словно его никогда и не было на свете. А что бы сталось с Акакием Акакиевичем, если бы не отняли у него шинель, а, напротив, подарили бы ему десяток шинелей, сотню шинелей, завалили бы его шинелями? Что сталось бы с гои, грезившем о бататовой каше, если бы поставить перед ним котел этой каши, десять котлов, море? Что происходит в психике маленького человека, когда его маленькие мечты осуществляются с гомерическим избытком? Именно этот эксперимент поставил Акутагава в своем рассказе. Как увидит читатель, бедолага пришел в ужас от обилия вожделенного лакомства. Он едва одолел маленький котелок. Он понял, что никогда в жизни больше в рот не возьмет бататовой каши. Мечта его при столкновении с перспективой полного удовлетворения перешла в панический страх, а страх – в безнадежное сожаление об утраченной мечте. Но в конце концов исчезло и сожаление. Маленькому человеку гораздо проще и легче жить без всяких желаний.
Квазиисторические новеллы о парадоксах психологии («Ворота Расёмон», «Нос», «Бататовая каша») скоро завоевали Акутагаве признание читателей и издателей и выдвинули Акутагаву в ряды лучших авторов того времени. Сосэки Нацумэ с радостной гордостью говорил о тонком вкусе и неподдельном юморе его произведений. Но сам Акутагава вскоре задумался. Инстинктом большого художника он почувствовал, что с его методом что-то не совсем в порядке – то ли с методом, то ли с применением этого метода. Литературно, слишком литературно. Слишком интеллектуально, слишком от головы. Стремясь разобраться в своих сомнениях, он сделал попытку сформулировать фундаментальную проблему искусства и написал рассказ «Носовой платок». Что же все-таки такое искусство и как оно соотносится с жизнью?
В заметках «Об искусстве» Акутагава подчеркнул, что произведение искусства должно быть совершенным, как ничто другое, что совершенство состоит в полном воплощении художественного идеала, в противном же случае служить искусству просто не имеет смысла. Именно это занимало Акутагаву в 1919 году, в двадцать семь лет. К этому времени уже вышли три сборника его рассказов, восторженно встреченных читателями. Он был уже женат и служил преподавателем в военно-морской механической школе. Он стал сотрудником крупной газеты «Осака майнити» (оклад пятьдесят иен в месяц, гонорары отдельно, право печататься в любом журнале).
А с северо-запада, из гигантской страны, тянули огненные сквозняки невиданных событий, разносящие семена революции; по всей Японии чернели пепелища на месте магазинов, складов и особняков крупных спекулянтов рисом, спаленных в бешеной вспышке «рисовых бунтов»; в Токио бастовали железнодорожники, печатники, рабочие военных арсеналов, учителя, почтовые служащие; банды фашиствующих молодчиков из «ронинкай» («общества ронинов») нападали на рабочие собрания и демонстрации, штрейкбрехерствовали, громили помещения профсоюзов; в Корее императорская военщина злобно затаптывала пламя всенародного восстания; в Приморье и в Восточной Сибири японские и американские солдаты с помощью белогвардейских палачей жестоко расправлялись с местным населением.
Акутагава был далек от всего этого. Войны, революции, стихийные бедствия казались ему чем-то преходящим, не заслуживающим внимания художника. В лучшем случае они могли служить событиями, приводящими в движение скрытые механизмы человеческой души. Единственная, неповторимая, значимая реальность жизни – это искусство, отражающее – нет, не отражающее, а исследующее эти механизмы. «Человеческая жизнь не стоит и одной строки Бодлера», – провозгласил он. Во всяком случае, жизнь, не связанная со служением искусству.
Во всей вселенной, считал он тогда, есть только одно дело, которое заполняет жизнь до краев, не оставляя места ни для сожалений, ни для разочарований. Это дело – служение искусству. Искусство приносит художнику высшие радости, окупает любые жертвы, оправдывает любые преступления. Художнику могут быть свойственны обыкновенные человеческие слабости, в своей обыденной жизни художник может пребывать в зависимости от сильных мира сего, невежественная чернь может смеяться над художником или страшиться его – все это не имеет к служению искусству никакого отношения; мнение черни, полагал он, ничего не значит, духом художник всегда неизмеримо выше самого своего могущественного властелина, и если человеческие слабости губят художника, так это не вина его, а беда.
В июле 1918 года в газете «Осака майнити» была закончена публикация одной из самых блестящих новелл Акутагавы – «Муки ада».
Ёсихидэ, придворный художник владетельного князя, единовластного господина над жизнью и смертью своих слуг и вилланов, на всем белом свете любил только искусство и свою юную дочку. Он был великим мастером, познавшим все тайны красоты и уродства и умевшим воплотить в красках какую угодно радость и какую угодно тоску, и еще он был отвратительным, желчным и неуживчивым старикашкой. Наконец, он имел недостаток, совершенно несвойственный большинству художников XX века: он не умел изображать того, чего никогда не видел хотя бы во сне. И вот однажды его светлость повелел Ёсихидэ расписать ширмы изображением мук ада. Вначале работа Ёсихидэ продвигалась успешно; адское пламя он видел во время большого пожара, корчившихся в муках грешников он наблюдал, истязая своих учеников, адские слуги в китайских одеждах и с бычьими и конскими харями неоднократно являлись ему в бреду. Но, по его замыслу, в центре картины должна была быть охваченная огнем карета с погибающей в ней молодой придворной дамой. Такого мастеру никогда еще не приходилось видеть, и он почтительнейше поверг к стопам его светлости просьбу... Его светлость, пожелав проучить злобного старика, который ради своей картины готов был предать мучительной смерти безвинную женщину, повелел сжечь на глазах у Ёсихидэ карету с его единственной и любимой дочерью. Все было выполнено по повелению. Ёсихидэ не бросился в пламя, как ожидал того его светлость. Человек был ввергнут в огненную пучину ада, а погубивший его художник торжествовал. Закончив свой шедевр, Ёсихидэ удавился.
«Человеческая жизнь не стоит и одной строки Бодлера». Что стоят человеческие жизни в сравнении с шедевром! Трижды прав был Ёсихидэ, ибо только искусство приносит художнику высшую радость, окупает любые жертвы, оправдывает любые преступления. Целью жизни может быть только искусство, в конечном счете оно является и целью существования рода человеческого, а все остальное – борения страстей, социальные катаклизмы, тяжкий труд крестьянина, хитрости политикана, технология, наука – имеет значение лишь в той мере, в какой может способствовать или препятствовать созданию шедевров.
Это было второе открытие Рюноскэ Акутагавы, но оно обрадовало его далеко не так сильно, как первое.
Рюноскэ Акутагава не стоял на бастионах осажденного города, как Лев Толстой; не поднимал голос в защиту справедливости, как Эмиль Золя; не сражался за революцию, как Ярослав Гашек. Он вел размеренную и довольно бестолковую жизнь японского литературного мэтра: по обусловленным дням принимал в своем кабинете «Тёкодо» («Храм чистой реки») литературную молодежь; посещал многочисленные банкеты; коллекционировал старинные картины и антиквариат; ссорился с издателями из-за гонораров; совершал лекционные поездки по стране; редактировал хрестоматийные сборники. В 1921 году он в первый и последний раз в жизни побывал за границей – по заданию редакции «Осака майнити» пропутешествовал по Китаю и по Корее. Великое землетрясение 1923 года, опустошившее пять префектур, в том числе и столичную, не произвело на него видимого впечатления: во всеуслышание он скорбел только о том, что в чудовищных пожарах погибло много бесценных произведений искусства...
Что еще? Как и многие другие литературные мэтры, он был неважным семьянином, хотя родил трех сыновей. Страдал от нервного истощения, от каких-то болезней желудочно-кишечного тракта, от ослабления сердечной деятельности и лечился на курорте Ютака.
И он непрерывно, бешено работал.
В первой половине 20-х годов «натуральная школа» Японии покатилась под гору. В литературную жизнь страны ворвался свирепый ветер коммерции. Сэйдзи Нома, основатель и владетель издательского концерна «Коданся», «журнальный король Японии», как восторженно назвал его другой крупнейший издатель, должно быть, первым понял, как надо разговаривать с литературной публикой. Теперь уже не издатель униженно просил у маститого мастера «все равно что, по вашему усмотрению», а маститые литераторы толпились в прихожей издателя в трепетном ожидании приема. Издатель диктовал свою волю. Издатель определял, что нужно писать и чего писать не следует. Издатель платил. И начался разгром.
Началась расплата за десятилетнее господство серости и безыдейности. Вчерашние поборники и беззаветные защитники вечных и незыблемых принципов упали на колени перед золотым тельцом. Сочинители эгобеллетристики принялись спешно учиться писать детективы и приключенческие романы. Специалисты по публичному самораздеванию штудировали европейскую и американскую бульварную макулатуру. That is the very story appeared in October 1916 in a Japanese literary magazine "Tyuo of crowns".
The professor of the Tokyo imperial university, a major in the field of colonial policy, was sitting in the verandah in a wicker chair and reading "Notes on dramaturgy" written by famous Swedish author Strindberg. It was strange to think that just fifty years ago he did not have even to dream about it all – neither imperial university in Tokyo, nor colonial policy, and problems of European dramaturgy. The progress is evident. And, especially, progress is noticeable in the material field. Guns of fatherland battleships in the Tsusima strait stopped rattling; the country was covered with a railway net; preventive means go from the fish bladder... But here in the field of spiritual rather a decline is planned, and professor cherished dream to facilitate mutual understanding between the people of the West and the people. He even knew what the basis this rapport must build upon. Bushido, "path of a warrior", this specific property of Japan, a glorious system of morality and a Samurai behavior that emerged six centuries ago. Of course, not everything is important in it for a professor's purposes, but the basic – requirement of tough self-discipline and virtuous life is clearly drawing the spirit of Bushido together with the spirit of Christianity.
The professor was leafing through Strindberg's novel and thinking about fates of Japanese culture when it was reported to him that a visitor has come. In the reception he welcomed a worshipful, elegantly dressed woman – the mother of one of the students. The visitor seated at the table and offered to her some tea, Professor inquired about the health of her son. To his greatest embarrassment, it turned out the youth had died and the guest had come to pass on his last "forgive" to Professor. For some time they were exchanging meaningless cues, and Professor noted one strange circumstance: the death of her own son affected neither appearance nor behaviour of a lady. Her eyes were dry. The voice sounded perfectly ordinary. Sometimes she even smiled probably. Professor was amazed and felt uneasy because of coldness and calm of a compatriot. And that is here happened. Accidentally dropping a fan, Professor climbed to get it under a table and saw a guest's hands placed on her knees. These hands were shaking and thin fingers were struggling to crush and crumple a handkerchief, as if it were aiming to tear it into pieces. Yes, the guest was smiling only with her face, but she was sobbing all her being.
After seeing a guest, Professor again sat down into an armchair in the verandah and took Strindberg. But he could not read. His thoughts were full of heroic behavior of this lady and he was touchingly thinking even with pride about the fact that the spirit of Bushido, a spirit of military cruel and noble self-discipline, really entered into the flesh and blood of a Japanese people. This minute his absent-minded glance fell on an open page of a book.
"Frauen Khaiberg a lot said about the handkerchief in time of my youth Strindberg had written... It was a trick of a double game that was that, smiling with her face, with her hands she was tearing a kerchief. Now we call what bad taste...»
Professor was confused and insulted. He was insulted not for the lady, but for his developed naive scheme where so clear this incident laid. And it did not occur to him that a guest's heroic behavior could have been explained by the reasons any relation to which the notorious concepts of a military-feudal honour do not have...
This is the approximate look of a commented content of one of the early stories of Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
To the unaided eye is noticeable an author's squeamish grin about a dream of an ill-fated professor to become an ideologue of Japanese culture on the basis of Bushido, this really specific combination of clan traditions in Japan with poorly digested confucianism. Already in the recent years of the XIXth century immediately after the ending of the Japanese-Chinese war the heads of an empire unambiguously demanded from fatherland literature creation of «bright-modern works» so called «komei – syosetsu», filled with institutional optimism and glorifying eagerness to fight, and generosity of a medieval and modern Samurai era. The crowd of talentless semi-literate writers rushed to fill out the book markets of the country with interminable variations on a theme about loyalty to the Suzerain and bloody revenge, unpicked bellies, and chopped off heads, duels on swords, and energetic bayonet attacks and in unison ideological dilettantes began to coo to them, only not so rudely and not so straight, about greatness of Bushido, positivity of Bushido, the need of a resurrection of Bushido that loomed from professors' rostrums. In the distant Europa guns rattled and rivers of blood poured, heels of Japanese patrols knocked along crooked alleys of Qingdao taken from Germans, the Empire prepared for great colony handholds. Unsurprisingly, that in these days thinking and widely erudite writer (Akutagawa, as we will see, was a very one) cruelly ridiculed a dreamy liberal who saw a spiritual similarity between the professional killer code being revived to life and Christianity which pitifully discredited itself.
But let us analyze a story more carefully. So, a certain professor, a specialist on colonial policy and an adherent of Bushido, reads Strindberg novels and is absorbed in thoughts about ways of overcoming a spiritual stagnation in his country. Then, he is talking with a woman, who recently lost a son and accidentally discovered that her external calm is only a mask and really she is tormented by a sorrowful trouble. He comes to an admiration – not so much from heroism of a guest as from a full, as it appears to him, match between her behavior and talentless abstract idea. If, in our opinion, the story were only about ridicule of ideological dilettantism, it would be quite sufficient. And what about Strindberg? Why did the author oppose behavior of the proud mother with the stage's taking Mrs. Khaiberg? He not in vain so boldly put an element of an accidental coincidence in a story: Professor faced a notorious indent from Strindberg almost immediately after an incident with a handkerchief. Apparently, the matter is not that ordinarily and the story has a «second bottom» not so obvious like the first one, but probably with the same importance.
Actually, the end of a story makes a strange impression. Reader by no means immediately realizes what problem arises suddenly from it. Monomaniac -Professor vaguely feels something in a blur, which is threatening to destroy serene harmony of his world. Trying to explain to himself this feeling, he is ready to suspect Strindberg in attempt to ridicule Bushido. He even is ready to justify himself: "A stage trick... and points of day-to-day morality are, of course, different things." And all these ones are by goals, but for that he is a monomaniac. If he took the trouble to divert from a favorite idea, he would manage to understand a paradox with which an incident confronted him lies in altogether another plane of meanings and notions. He would manage to see the problem of such a one by which the author placed her before a reader (and himself). A problem of correlation of life and art.
In the eyes of connoisseurs theatre for performing reception of Mrs. Heiberg has long become a banality. But hundreds of thousands, millions of women both before and after Mrs. Khaiberg in different circumstances and for different reasons set their jaw, crumpled handkerchiefs, chewed palms with their nails not to cry, sob out, show their ache and nobody never called it «bad taste». And it is not important why they were doing it: by innate pride or firmness of character, even though by commitment to the code Bushido. In this case there is not a matter in it. The deal is in a notable metamorphosis which our perception of human behavior undergoes when it carries out of real life to the stage, screen, or pages of books. What is psychological nature of this metamorphosis? What is a secret in which of adequate translation from infinitely various language of infinitely diverse life into language of art?
As it seems to us, deep essence, the «second bottom» of the story "Handkerchief" consist just in this thing. This is the major problem which not that to solve – simply to see it isn't given to professors, adherents of Bushido, and this problem all the life tormented strange and wise soul of Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa, who committed a suicide in 1927 in the age of thirty-five years.
He was born in Tokyo morning on March 1, 1892 or by ancient calendar, in the hour of the Dragon, the day of the Dragon, the month of the Dragon and therefore he was called Ryunoske for the «sense» hieroglyph of this name "Ryu" meant "dragon".
When he was nine months old, his mother deranged and the baby by the law and custom was passed for an adoption and upbringing for a childless ancle's family, who was a head of the Tokyo construction department prefecture - Akutagava Mitiaki. So little Ryunosuke lost a surname Niikhara and received a surname Akutagava, left vulgar districts of Kyobasi and the house of an ignorant nabob from a far western province and lived in the old Hojo, district edoskih gloomy mansions, the only son of the indigenous inhabitant of the capital, a great connoisseur and lover of Japanese culture.
There is no place in small preface for details of child and youth age of a writer. Will only say he receives initial – and very serious – cultural hardening in a house of his adoptive father, he learns wonderfully and since the school days he likes reading of Japanese and Chinese classics; in eleven years he edits a handwritten magazine which «publishes» together with classmates and since fourteen years he begins to read France and Ibsen; and, studying on the literature department of a so-called higher school, what immerses in twenty years without memory and an arrangement in reading of European poets, prose writers, and philosophers, inter alia, by Baudelaire, Strindberg, Bergson.
In 1913 Akutagava entered the Imperial University of Tokyo in department of English literature and soon took up the first works in belles-lettres. But, firstly, let us say a few words how the literary world of Japan was organized and in what state was Japan literature.
How oddly, in new bourgeois Japan, that, starting with structure of government apparatus even ending with the uniform of the headgear of railroad porters, everything was carefully being where copied off European samples, in Japan which strove hard to become equivalent to the West in both a material and a spiritual plan, organization of literary world emerged initially in a purely feudal style. The first masters of new literature completely likened with craftsman masters – they united in a likeness of shops or clans, got journeymen and pupils, mercilessly exploited them, made the friend for the friend a stand and all attempts for their prerogatives to be encroached on broke off furiously. And these prerogatives were great; in particular, there were all the literature paths, in other words, the central literature monthlies in their hands and either only loners who had a protection directly in magazines or possessed ample resources or students of universities who were vouchsafed honour to enter a respective workshop immediately after the first work could pass through these cordons without a delay. Nothing else was left to everyone except «to enter into the gate», in other words, to go training and serving to a literary boss.
But we do not want to tell, that such a system had only negative aspects. Direct patronage by an honorary writer over a beginning author, in spite of feudal surroundings, brought, undoubtedly, enormous benefits. One does not need to forget, that a beginner wanted to have a shelter of the master whom he deeply respected, whom he idolized. In the country, where publication editing in "our" sense of this word did not exist (and now, as it seems, do not exist), the boss's hand moistened with red India ink could do him and were a great favor with a manuscript born in the bosom. Besides, such organization of literature like a working system was afloat a very small period of time and by that time, when Ryunosuke Akutagawa entered into literature, it had transformed to the much more civilized forms. And, when in 1915 he, just an author of two, entered with a madly beating heart into an office of his favorite writer Soseki Natsume, of course, he had neither to drag water, nor run to a neighbouring shop to buy vegetables for a kitchen.
It is appropriate to put a question here: for what Akutagawa was an apprentice – even though to such a master, Soseki Natsume? Yes, for his decades of work Natsume was called «the years of Natsume» in literature. Yes, the story "Rasyomon's gate" drew attention and was awarded praise of Natsume. But the doors to literature were wide opened for Akutagawa, even without a help of his master. He was a member of University literary clan and was actively published in his "New Currents of Thought" journal. His stories "Mask of Hyottoko" and "Rashōmon" were published in the presentable monthly "Imperial Literature" magazine, while he was still a student. There he was already evolving, as we will see, his original views on a role and tasks of literature. And nevertheless he is «entering into the gate» of Soseki Natsume.
In 1885 literary-Anglicist Syoyo Tsubouti published the tractate "Essence of a novel" – which, in general was determining for a nature of new Japanese literature. He called writers to renounce the principles of traditional Japanese poetics with its striving for a bold metaphor and pointed storyline, proposed to use a uniquely European the «technique of description» and formulated the new literary method "syadzitsusyugi" ("reflect as it is"). This method presupposed photographic accuracy imagining of everything, which is attractive to author's look, furthermore, firstly – scenes of human feelings. It seemed, Syoyo offered to new Japanese literature precisely exactly what was lacked: loyalty to reality. This method not for nothing was met with such a delight, that its author reverently-enthusiastically was called "the bell in the dawn". In fact, this tractate became sooner a very lifebuoy thrown to the Japanese novelists who were literally stifled in intense confusion of various and often controversial West influences. The knowledge of West literature, collected during centuries of evolutionary development, struck Japan literally in a flash: romanticism, sentimentalism, realism, naturalism, and the first decadent and modernistic tricks. All that was to digest as soon as possible and select or compile that, firstly, matched and was necessary for society of that time and, secondly, they would find themselves nabobs «able to do» from literature.
"Syadzitsusyugi" principle suit many. It was taken with indescribable naivete: describe everything that is in front of your eyes and one does not need to worry about interest, the story, stylistics and, of course, there is no sense in analysis visible things, look up its connections with political, economic, social fortune of the country. Reflect as it is.
Of course, the best writers took this principle not so literally. Ftabateya's novel "Floating cloud" «showed the reverse of meidziiskoi civilization». Poet Tokoku Kitamura in the end of the century was defending realism permeated by ideals. Terribly wrote about destiny of the Japanese woman Itiyo Higuti. When schoolboy Akutagava was excitedly read out by France and Ibsen, names of Rock Tokutomi, Tosona Simadzaki, Katai Tayama angrily rattled during the first decade of a new century. But the basic tendency has already been defined. The method "syadzitsusyugi" turned into naturalism of Japan and soon Katai Tayama moved out principles of "plane" and "unadorned depiction". Sense of these principles reduced to a proclamation: "We expel all entertaining from art; we expel everything that treats skill; we expel everything that treats ideals". The principle of tough fotografichnost logically led to assertion that in veracity the writer can describe only himself himself. Were offered to writers to undress themselves publicly. An ego-belletristic appeared in the pages of magazines and books showed up souls and beds of known masters of literature turned inside out.
Of course, even opposition took place. The satire of Soseki Natsume "Your humble servant cat" stuck into the gray sea of sad plotless writing completely deprived of moods and common sense with the sparkling blade. He gave up richest arsenal of Japanese and European poetics, all the means of satire, humor, a travesty, grotesque known in world literature versus a swamp at stagnations «of plane depiction». And, however, it was real considerable realism, realism in the highest sense of this word, depiction of life in its social and psychological contradictions...
But one swallow does not a summer make. "Your humble servant cat" appeared in 1905, then some more stories and Natsume's novels followed him. And that's all. The Japanese «natural school» went continually forward it's victorious procession, with a disgust stepping aside both «bright-modern literature» and big society problems. Young Ryunoske Akutagawa followed it's evolution with anxiety and distrust. It has nothing in common with that he loved and wanted to make in literature. What's why he met a great master. It seems to us, that he made this step just in case he felt necessity to his colleagues of University clan and especially to himself, once and for all, to distance his creation from naturalism, «plane depiction» and egobelletristiс. Moreover, probably, he was looking up an evidence of his rightness from Natsume. One can imagine how, read his other story, Soseki Natsume speaks, approvingly nodding: "You are on a right path, Akutagawa Ryunosuke. You are right».
In "Kondzyaku monogatari" ("Extended tales"), the literary monument of the end of the XIth century is a short telling about the provincial thief which, in hopes of profit went to the brilliant capital and from annoyance robbed an old beggar man in Rasyomon's gate tower. In our days thanks to Akutagawa (and successes of Japanese cinema) the name Rasyomon is known to almost each cultural person in the world and it probably was initiated with the fact that the twenty-four year old student after the long thoughts about his theme in literature, his literary principles, and his own literary method came approximately to such conclusions. The infinite human spirit universe must be my theme, human psychology, my principles are as follows: literature is Art, literature should be Art, whatever indiscriminate adherents of simplicity and a artlessness mumble there, convinced opponents of mastery; my method...
Just here Akutagawa did his first discovery. For sure, Tsubouti was right when he wrote in his "Essence of a novel": "The main thing – description of feeling, then morals and customs... Feeling - is a core of a work». It is right – human psychology must be the subject of literature. It is right, that even morals and customs have minor value. But the term "description" which was shown on practice, easily beckons to a thoughtless notion and passive copywriting. The writer must be active towards a subject of his work. Literature, said Akutagawa, should dealed not with description of feelings, but with research, analysis of psychology. But analysis presupposes an instrument. What can be the instrument of literature analysis of a mental world? Only one: An event. As the grain of catalyst thrown into uniform dead solution causes a stormy chemical reaction in this solution, so an event sets in motion human mentality sleeping in ordinary state, provokes her to various acts, dissects it, turns it inside out. It can be a universal disaster, -- for example, a war; and private misfortune, -- for example, unrequited love; and a mean detail of life – for example, purchase of a nice overcoat. The choice of an event -- is an author's work, the choice depends on the task which an author sets himself, on personality of a hero of a work and lots of other factors, which in the end forms a literary mastery. That was a partialy a way of thoughts of Ryunosuke Akutagawa and he began to turn his discovery into a word.
He is writing a story about a person who felt such disgust to an evil, that would rather die in a hunger, than stand up on a path of a crime. When he saw an old beggar who had abomination, his abstract hatred to an evil logically transformed to a criminal, than hatred towards a criminal as logically turned into a crime against her: he, who was hated an evil, robbed an old woman. An ancient anecdote about a thief who robbed an old beggar in Rasyomon's gate – came with a very grain of catalyst which unfolded a narrow stream of mentality of a private bourgeois to a bright psychological etude.
It was typical that Akutagawa immediately with respect refused an authorship to events. Story plot of his novels, making up paradoxes and sudden turns of human mentality go back to medieval anecdotes and incidents from a military-feudal epic. He strove to underline again and again, that everyday life and tempers, action time, and setting do not play a role for it's analysis. Human psychology has not changed due to all these centuries, Akutagawa discoursed, and he has the right to dissect it on a backdrop of somehow numerical grotesque circumstances so that they would help a cause.
It is immediately important to say, that he reassessed his literary opponents. Naive colleagues did not understand properly his method and began to intensely reproach him in conservatism, striving to go back from reality to the past, painful addiction to antiquity. Firstly, he was silent contemptuously, but after all he was forced to explain.
"I take a theme ,"he was writing," and decide to embody it in a story. To give the strongest artistic expression to this theme, I need some unusual event. But I do not manage tell about this unusual event -precisely because it is unusual – as if it happened in today's Japan, our Japan. Now, if I write contrary to all without being counted with the fact that I do not manage it, I, as a rule, cause senses of non-naturalness to a reader. The only means to avoid such a difficulty is to take an event to the past, tell as it occurred long time ago, in antiquity... In my stories where a material is taken from ancient chronicles, action expands in a remote past with a larger part precisely under influence of this need. Thus, although I am writing about antiquity, but to antiquity I have no addiction». (Translation of N. Feldman.)
In that circumstance that Akutagawa began to use his method based on an ancient chronicles material, one may see an infuence of France's quasi-historical stories. But he had predecessors even in Japan. Akinari Ueda, an outstanding writer of a second half of the XVIIIth century, was writing in preface to a series of his stories "Moon in a fog": «Reading thier works (works of classics of secular Japan and China literature. – А. S.), you may see, that a vision of these compositions' are full of unusual images and, at least, their are comic and incoherent, but they are closer to truth, phrase after phrase smoothly flow and captivated a reader. Present may be seen in a deep antiquity». Anyway, «unusual events» described in antiquity became a reliable instrument for research of mechanisms of human psychology in Akutagawa's works.
The story "Batat porrige" represents special interest in this relation. An ancient anecdote about how a poor samurai all his life dreamed to «devour» enough with a batat porrige and how he gorged with it when good ones provided this possibility for this peace of amusement to him is drawn to its stem too. But Akutagawa built a frank paraphrase of Gogol's "Overcoat" on this unsophisticated anecdote. An analogue of Akakiy Akakievich, a samurai in little officials is serving in a court of an all-powerful feudal lord. In a full accordance with his social status, Akakiy Akakievich is a little man, beggar beaten to a death. Like Akakiy Akakievich, he represents the most unlovely sight, wears worn clothes and, of course, serves for all surrounding people as a subject of rudest mockeries and ridicules. Moreover, as if he was not satisfied by these common features and similarities between his hero and Akakiy Akakievich, Akutagawa adds into a story the indent which directly indicates to a reader an original. Gogol writes: «Only if a joke was realy unbearable... he said: "Leave me alone, why are you hurting me?" And something strange was in words and voice with which they were procounced. It may be heard in a voice something like begging to a pity, that one young fella... which allowed (others' example) nearly to laugh on him, suddenly stopped, as if he was stouned, and then like everything seen in another way ». Akutagawa writes: «Only when ridicules were over the top.. he strangely wrinkled his face – in a cause of a cry or laughter – and said: "It really does not allowed, to behave like that, do not you think?..." Those who saw his face or heard his voice suddenly felt a prick of pity... This feeling, as it seems them, for the moment riched to the very heart. Truefully, a feeling was such a little duration that it was felt shortly. And there was one ordinary samurai, just a young man... In the beginning, of course, he was among others, who made jokes with no reason over red-nosed goys. But once, he heard a voice that spoke: "It really does not allowed, to behave like that, do not you think?..." And since those times these words were in his head. Goys became in his eyes an extremely another identity...» Lastly, a scale of innermost desires of heroes ends the analogy: Akakiy Akakievich «was feeding spiritually, carrying in his thoughts an eternal idea of a future overcoat», and the red-nosed samurai dreamed to «devour» enough of batat porrige.
It is the end of an anecdotal analogy and a start of experiment. Akakiy Akakievich dies because, as it turned out, it is impossible to overcome a loss of a greatcoat, desired target, and sense of being. A little man grows into a tragic figure. If no misfortune occurred, he would live his days and would die in time, quietly, like he has never existed. And what would happen to Akakiy Akakievich if a greatcoat was not taken from him, but on the contrary, he would be presented ten greatcoats, hundred greatcoats? What would happen with goys dreamed about batat porrige if he would have a kettle of this pap, ten kettles set in front of him? What happens in mentality of a little man when his little dreams are realized with a Homeric surplus? Akutagawa made precisely this experiment in his story. As the reader will see, wretch came to horror from a swarm of desired delicacy. He hardly finished eating a little kettle. He understood, that he will never taste any batat porrige in his life. His dream after a conquest with a prospect of complete satisfaction transformed into panicky fear, and fear - was a hopeless regret of a lost dream. But after all even a regret disappeared. It is much simpler and easier to live without any desires for a little man.
The quasi-historical stories based on paradoxes of psychology ("Rasyomon's gate", "Nose", "Yam porridge") soon won Akutagawa a confession of readers and publishers and moved out Akutagawa in a rows of the best authors of that time. Soseki Natsume spoke with joyful pride of a delicate taste and an authentic humor in his works. But soon Akutagawa started to think further. With an instinct of a great master he felt that his method had had something wrong: with a method or with a usage of this method. Literary, too literary. Too intellectually, strictly from a mind. Striving to sort out his doubts, he made an attempt to formulate a fundamental issue of art and wrote the story "Handkerchief". Well, speaking true-fully, is this an art and how it comparable with life?
In the notes "About art" Akutagawa emphasized, that the art must be perfect as nothing else, that perfection consisted in a full incarnation of a fiction ideal, in a contrary, it simply has no sense to live for the art. Precisely this thing occupied Akutagawa in 1919, in his twenty-seven years. By this time, three collections of his stories were greeted by readers enthusiastically. He was already married and served as a teacher in a naval mechanics school. It became an employee of a large newspaper "Osaka Mainichi Shinbun" (the salary fifty yen a month, the fees are separate, the right to be published in any magazine).
And, from the north-west of a gigantic country, fire draughts of unprecedented events flapping seeds of a revolution; there were «rice revolts» sites of fire through all Japan instead stores, warehouses, and mansions of big speculators of rice burned in a wild outburst; railwaymans, printers, workers of military arsenals, a teacher, post office officials struck in Tokyo; gangs of fascist fellows from a «roninkai» («ronin society») attacked worker meetings and demonstrations, streikbrechered, trade union premises were destroyed; in Korea imperial soldiery was maliciously trampling heat of a nationwide revolt; in the Primorsky Territory and Eastern Siberia Japanese and American soldiers with help of White Guard executioners cruelly killed local population.
Akutagawa was far away from it. Wars, revolutions, natural disasters seemed to him like fleeting, not deserving an artist's attention. In any case, they could be helpful as events setting in motion hidden mechanisms of a human soul. The one and only, unique, significant reality of life is - art, it reflects - no, not reflective, but explore these mechanisms. "A human life does not deserve even Baudelaire's one line," he proclaimed. Anyway, living, which is not associated with service to art.
In all universe, as he thought then, is only one case, which fills life to the brim without leaving a place for neither regret nor disappointments. This matter - is a service to an art. Art brings the highest joys to an artist, compensates any victims, justifies any crimes. All human simple weaknesses may be inherent to an artist, he can be connected with the powerful of this world in his routine life, disrespectful canaille may be laughing or be frightening over an artist – but all this has no links with an art serving; he thought that, an opinion of canaille has no sense, a spirit, priority of artist, has more power, than powerful Lord, and if human weaknesses hurt an artist, so it is not his guilt, but his disaster.
In July 1918 "Osaka Mainichi Shinbun" newspaper finally made a publication of one of the most brilliant stories of Akutagawa – "Torments of a hell".
Yosikhide, the court artist of the sovereign prince, an autocratic master of the life and death of one's servants and villans, in the whole white world he loved only the art and his young daughter. He was a grand master who cognized all secrets of beauty and monstrosity and was able to embody any joy and any sadness in colors and still he was a disgusting, jaundiced and quarrelsome old man. Lastly, he had a disadvantage absolutely atypical to the majority of artists of the XXth century: he was not unable to pretend what he never saw at least in a dream. And once his lordship ordered Yosikhide occupy screens with depiction of torments of a hell. At first a work of Yosikhide was moving successfully; he saw hell flame in the large fire, he observed the sinners who were twining in torments, torturing his pupils, hell servants in Chinese clothes even with bull and horse mugs repeatedly appeared when he was in a delirium. But, based on his idea, it had to be a coach in the picture center overcome with fire with a young lady-in-waiting dying in it. It had never happened with him to see such a thing and he most reverently refused a request of lordship to its feet... The Lord itself wished an evil to an old man who was ready to kill an innocent woman with a painful death for him picture, ordered to burn on Yosikhide's eyes a coach with his one and beloved daughter. Everything was made according to an order. Yosikhide was not thrown into flame as his lordship expected him. A man was driven to a fire bosom of a hell and the artist who ruined him triumphed. Finished his masterpiece, Yosikhide strangled.
"A human life does not deserve even Baudelaire's one line". What is a price for human lives in comparison to a masterpiece! Thrice Yosikhide was right, that only art gifts a highest joy to an artist, compensates any sacrifices, justifies any crimes. The aim of life could be only an art, ultimately it is a very goal of existence of a human beings and whole rest – struggles of passions, social cataclysms, a peasant's hard labor, a politician's tricks, technology, science – make a difference only in the extent in which he can contribute or impede creation of masterpieces.
It was the second discovery of Ryunosuke Akutagawa, but it pleased him not so deeply as the first.
Ryunosuke Akutagawa was not standing on bastions of a besieged city as Leo Tolstoy did; he was not raising a voice in defence of justice as Emil Zolya exclaimed; was not fighting for a revolution as Yaroslav Gashek did. He was living measured and rather dull life of a Japanese literary master: during working days he received a literary youth in his office of "Tyokodo" ("Temple of a clean river"); attended numerous banquets; was collecting ancient pictures and antiques; was quarrelling with publishers about fees; was making lecture trips across the country; was editing renowned collections. In 1921 he made his ultimate abroad trip – based on the aim-work set by reduction of "Osaka mainiti" he traveled across China and Korea. The great earthquake of 1923 which desolated five prefectures, including metropolitan, did not make apparent impression on him: publicly he was grieved only by much priceless art dying in the terrible fires...
What else? As many other literary masters, he was a mediocre family man, wanting, bore three sons. He suffered from nervous exhaustion, some diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, weakening of cardiac activity and was treated in the Yutaka resort.
And he continuously, wildly worked.
In the first half of 20s the «natural school» of Japan rolled down. A fierce wind of commerce swarmed into literary life of the country. Seidzi Noma, a founder, and holder of a publication concern «Kodannutsya», as the other biggest publisher enthusiastically called him, «the king of magazines of Japan» probably understood first as one needs to talk with the literary public. It was not the publisher that already now humiliatingly asked honourable Mr. "what, is all the same by your discretion" for it and the honourable writers crowded in a publisher's hall in awed reception expectation. A publisher was dictating his will. It was a publisher who determined was to write and was not to write. A publisher paid. And a defeat began.
A punishment for a ten-year domination of dullness and narrow-mindedness began. Yesterday supporters and selfless defenders of eternal and unwavering principles fell to knees in front of a golden calf. Authors of ego-belletristic began to hurriedly learn how to write detective stories and travel novels. Specialists in public self-strip studied European and American boulevard waste paper. The biggest writers including old friends of Akutagawa were organizing according to Dumas, the father, literature factories, where poor students for half kopeck coins were composing stories for them and writing drafts. One of Akutagawa's most talented contemporaries, great prose writer, play-writer Takeo Arisima committed suicide.
In this chaos of cheap temptations, powerful vacuous chatter, treasons to high ideals Ryunosuke Akutagawa worked as an insane man. Probably, he was the very one of the gran masters of "great literature", that did not bow his head. However, it is necessary to suppose: publishers excellently understood, that pushes him had no gain, -- enormous, inexhaustible talent constantly made him a respectful attention of readers. But he himself did not find quiet. Search, search, search – that was a core, essence of his activity. One thing is - to open and master a certain principle. The other thing - is to implement it to a life, to a word. And a writer's thought feverishly beat in a subsurface of a non-turning pile of facts of a world culture, striving to find in this infinite variety something main, unique, irreplaceable, in other words philosophic stone, which will once and for all solve in a miraculous way all problems that tormented him. He understood, that theoretical constructions would not satisfy him, that only an experience could lead him to correct decision and he had been writing story by story, essay by essay, tanka by tanka. His colleagues were whining, publicly complaining, that there was nothing to write more about, and he hardly had a free time – thoughts and feelings were pouring off a hand to a paper, turning into simple shapes or naive, strange or fanciful, sometimes even fantastic. Perhaps, any writer can brag by such a genre and theme mosaic, which the creation of Akutagawa Ryunosuke has.
Lets consider, for an example, a literature production of Akutagawa from 1921 December to August 1922.
"In a thicket." A striking literary work absolutely unique in literary history, which raised frank alogism to the highest artistic level.
"General." A simple and harsh story revealing an appearance of a professional fanatic warrior in four very precisely chosen aspects: general and soldiers, general, and enemies, general and art, general and a new generation.
"A grin of Gods." A story which would do honour of any anthology of modern science fiction.
"A trolley." A realistic childhood story, lyrical and slightly sad as all works of such a kind.
"A story of revenge for good." Again paradoxes of human psychology, and again based on medieval material.
"A saint." A fantastic parable.
"A garden." A story of a death of an ancient family which came to an end after Meidzi's coup. Either in a theme, or in a mood Chekhov's powerful influence is clearly felt.
"The girl Rokunomiya." A story developing the same theme. As a rule Akutagawa was very occupied by pictures of an extinguishment with last representatives of civilizations that died. Afterwards it was not a last time he forcing this theme.
"Purity of О-Tom." A typical historical story without any implication imagining an incident from a civil war during Meidzi's coup.
"О-Гин." A masterfully written story of persecution on Christians in Japan of the XVIIth century. According to N. Feldman, "his «Christian» stories invariably represent combining of irony and admiration – irony directed to the objective side of religion – and admiration to the subjective world of a believer".
"Three treasures." A deliberately naive and earth-mined play explicitly stylized in a medieval folks theatre and moreover European one...
One could add to this list the story "Heresy", some more stories, a collection of little essays – "dzuikhitsu", verses, but even placement of what in a real collection is sufficient. Science fiction and realism, the Middle Ages and modernity, policy and history, prose and plays, frank laughter and tenuous sadness, literary simplicity and sophisticated stylization... are avidly following of Chekhov – and there is it all, in a rapid tempo, in a same place, intertwines, recovers one another. Akutagawa was a virtuoso master, he with incredible precision found or was creating the most suitable stories for an implementation his ideas in literature, he fixed them in a right form without a will to know any prohibitions and literature taboos.
He wrote a lot and variedly; he had an enormous success. Collections of his stories came out one prior to another and were fastly bought. In April 1925 a multi-volume series of "Collection of modern works" was opened with his book. Of course, he was criticized, he was preached, they slandered it – it all has relations to his tormenting in life. It turns out it is much easier to find and formulate a principle than to find out its suitability on practice. Enormous literary experience of Akutagawa was completely indifferent with this principle and in a perspective of world view the idea of primate of art over life turned some strange and unpleasant side, arousing in their soul and consciousness thousands hundred painful ones "For what?" and "why?". Yes, art is, undoubtedly, a process of reflection images in reality, besides, a notion "reflection" can not be reduced to reflection in a flat mirror, the notion "reality" depending on the purposes which an artist sets to himself must include even his inner world and the notion "image" essentially depends on specificity of this art form. It arose from an experience of culture of all times and nations, it was clearly confirmed by Akutagawa's experience. But, as it turns out, it was not enough.
Akutagawa was a too great master in order not to be a dialectician, at least even intuitive one. "The principle "art is above everything" – ,"he announced after all," at least a very this principle in literary works –, undoubtedly, causes only a yawn." And further more: "Since long ago fervently proclaimed «art greater than all» were for the most part neuters of art." Philosophic stone was found not where Akutagawa was looking for him with such a violent energy. Not in a beautiful palace of human culture, but in the rough and monolithic foundations on which this palace was erected. Elementary logic, fundamentals of dialectic. Art can't have being as can't have being one pole of a magnet. Art exists only with the reason because a consumer of art exists. Bbetween an art and its consumer must be solid a functional link, going far beyond relationship rules of a type "a writer writes, a reader reads". A certain form of a powerful interaction. If we kick out a banal and arrogant, in the worst sense of this word, fact, that consumers of art are like-a-cultural dilettantes and formations, leisure-possessing elite, and accept, that a consumer of art should be a nation in that case all "For what?" and "why?" and in a place of chaos arises a harmonious system: people breed art from their belly and art fertilizes peoples' loins.
That was roughly discourse of Ryunosuke Akutagawa. So he made his third discovery.
But it was already late.
In a far north-west which suddenly moved closely, a gigantic country began excessive work of a transformation of a world with a root uprooting ignorance of a century, suffering from a decay, going through hunger and cold, through superstition layers, and delusions to a fantastic future. In China was raging a revolution headed by Sun Yat-Sen, huge people masses were rising against a predominance of foreigners and their own militarist generals, national-revolutionary troops were storming cities of Northern China occupied by the Manchuria dictator, creature of Japanese soldiery Zhang Zuo-Lin. Japanese government frightened by socialist moods among workers mushrooming published a law "About dangerous thoughts"; and simultaneously – increase of power and international prestige of USSR compelled the government to rebuild diplomatic and trade relations with the Soviet Union and withdraw troops from the Northern Sakhalin; and immediately – head of the government General Tanaka put to the emperor's feet the secret memorandum from which it was followed that for Japan a need «to again cross swords with Russia on fields of South Manchuria» existed...
Akutagawa did not see the continuation. Everything was ahead – «a Mukden incident» and the Antikomintern pact, Pyorl-Kharbor and a battle on the Volga, extermination camps, «troops» of General Isii, and an atomic mushroom above Hiroshima. But bloody glows of the next shocks already wavered on a face of a planet and he, a sophisticated master, erudite and deeply ignorant in policy, looked into them with alarm, trying to understand their message. Thunders of giant class collisions understood after all by his consciousness and how small, how small he had seemed to himself with his confusions and pure art search at celestial levels! He already knew, that by his third and last discovery desserted a sentence to him himself, the former one and dreamed only to stay his on feet. He writes: "Shakespeare, Goethe, Tikamatsu Mondzaemon will someday die. But the loins which bore them – a great people – will never die. Diverse art, however a shape of an art changed, is born from their subsurface». He besought himself: «Akutagawa Renosuke! Akutagawa Renosuke! Hold on more strongly with roots to earth! You are a reed being swung by a wind. Perhaps, clouds above you will someday be dispersed. Only stand still strong on ground». He spoke, convincing himself: "Of course, I failed. But what made me will create someone else. A death of one tree is a private phenomenon. Until great soil storing innumerable seeds in its bosom exists».
He felt worse and worse. Ages of an intensive work, painful illnesses, eternal fear of madness, as it seemed to him, inherited inevitably from the mother impacted. But, now, importance was in other things. Fear of loneliness with an unusual power overcame him. He understood, that he is hunging in emptyness. Recent friends who turned into successful literary go-getters sickened him. He with an horror rejected a possibility to serve for oneself a state with its imperialism and frank police essence. All his life he loved and worshipped only art. There remained a people, a true art spring, and the only consumer. Akutagawa declared: "Listen to hammer strikes. Until this rhythm exists, art will never die»? But it was not the knowledge that entered his flesh and blood, it merely logically followed from his new notions. He proclaimed: "Rightness of socialism is not a subject of a discussion. Socialism is just inevitability». But he was not a specialist in socialism, socialism only associated at his place with Russia the genius of which he idolized and he was ready to number even Chaplin at all among the socialists. He discribed himself: "I... am a romantic by nature, by outlook view – a realist, by political beliefs – a communist." Even here he hardly clearly imagined what he talked about.
Proclaimed a firm relationship between nation and art, he did not paradoxically believe that his work, work of a master virtuoso, represented som value for nation. Basically, he just did not believe into a nation. At best, he was able to be touched. And he was convinced the way to nation was blocked for him, an aesthete and an individualist. One thing was clear to him: Reality is a hell where only «elite minority» can exist perfectly, in other words, - idiots and rascals. The place for Ryunoske Akutagawa is a hell of loneliness.
It was of time for him to sort out this cordial chaos, settle a score with himself and with what he was loving more than life. And he wrote his amazing "Dialogues in darkness", the most original self-confession released in a form of conversations – disputes with Conscience, Art, and Inspiration.
The duel against Conscience – an angel, who in a dawn of the world fought against Jacob – is, in other words, a duel against a God, reminds us in a strange way of a giveaway game. Akutagawa is in a circle of a guilty, he has nothing to oppose against his Conscience besides sophisticated casuistry and a plaintively-confused phrase "like everyone ,I am" and he retreats down the line. The dispute ends horribly: Conscience abandons a master to suffer in the hell he created himself. A real genius turn is further coming. In the dispute with Art Akutagawa sets out from a perspective of his lost conscience. Art attempts to give him back cordial calm, bring him to the world with it itself by all the measures, but in vain. It tries to prove to him with his conscience everything is in order because the on is so suffering. But it is not obligatory for suffering to have a conscience. "I have only nerves." Art is convincing him he was in all his senses, thoughts, acts always right. "You are a poet, an artist, everything is permitted to you." – «I am a poet, Akutagava agrees. – I am an artist. But I am a member of the society...» In its terms beloved art becomes a demon of great temptation. "You are a dog ,"he says." You are the devil who once climbed to Faust in appearance of a dog." It can not console one any more. And it leaves him suffering too.
Conscience went, art ceased to give joy. But the still powerful force which, like X-rays, is penetrating through any obstacles remained, she is uninvited, takes an artist without remains. This power is Inspiration. To revolt against it is useless. It hangs as Damocles's sword above Akutagava's head and only waits for a moment the fact that he will draw a feather to a hand. Perhaps he who lost conscience and joy of creation, laid burden of the whole life on bare shoulders is to die? Рюноскэ Акутагава! Hold on more strongly with roots to earth! Stand firmly on ground. Of oneself. Of some children.
But he already felt that he could not resist. The ugly ghosts surrounded him from all sides, mocked, threatened, prevented from seeing. The long-dead daughter of a madman whom he once caressed; the disfigured corpse of the sister's husband, this unfortunate cheat who finished by a suicide; the thick voices in a telephone, and the strange looks of an accidental passer-by. He lost orientation – where what there are cracks, what hell it was this abomination crawling out for? From the dark abyss of errors where he now imagined the own past? From bustle having disgusted to loathing where his sad days dragged now? From Africa of its spirit – sick, inflammatory, sad imagination? It still cherished a dream to write the novel a hero of which Japanese folk itself had to become since mythical times before its days, but he did not see this hero, the fierce military leaders in horned helmets even with bloody swords, quiet and wise philosophers who were sending immortal lections to the world from silence of solitary refuges, the greatest artists whose creations shocked souls of people many generations later concealed it...
But he continued to work. For the first time in life he took not the personality, but as a whole the society as an object of his analysis. Without wishing to bind himself by concrete details of everyday life, he transferred an act of his new work to a fantastic country. "I inhabited the world of my story with supernatural animals. Moreover, in one of these animals I drew myself». For example, there was a satirical utopia in the country «of nixes» (Kappa) in the March book of a monthly of Kaidzo in 1927 – brilliant grotesque, the striking travesty of bourgeois Japan... are the scary caricature of an author himself, the flesh from the flesh, the blood from blood of this Japan, its production, and her sacrifice. There was no place to which of him one could move away from neither one's past nor the present nor himself.
In premonition of the inevitable and near death he tried to be freed from burden «of the whole life», having transferred it on a paper. Perhaps he saw it the last straw and decision that he begins such a work was dictated by semi-deliberate striving «to be directed» caused by fanciful notions about the methodology of freidovskii psychoanalysis. Carefully, trying not to lose any detail, he described his effects and feelings during several days during one of the trips to Tokyo, told about fear before coming madness, his disgust towards people and him, burning everyday life pain. "Will nobody who would slowly strangle me while I sleep be found?" in despair they exclaimed, finishing a story, and now they began the even last nova, the tale where they expounded a story of their life – there are not life not even, but their internal hell, their defeat. These two works are "Gear wheels" and "An idiot's life" – perhaps one can call works of Ryunoske Akutagavy climaxes. And with a culmination of all the prewar literature of Japan. All the wealth of feelings and a thought of a great writer, all his vast mastery concentrated in them and at the same time in them, as in a drop of heavy and vivid mercury, hopelessness and hopelessness of a situation to which culture of a country on the eve of the most awful ordeals drove itself how someday its fate got were reflected.
He presented the world two more masterpieces. But he did not manage to be free. Having taken the lethal dose of barbital, the son of a madwoman and trader from Yamaguti, writer Ryunoske Akutagava, ended the life with a suicide with the dawn on July 4, 1927 in the age of thirty-five years.
Perhaps he went to of a better world because of his suffering in struggle against madness.
Perhaps he ceased to live because of the fact that his bared conscience was not in power that he more endures continual bloodily lewd to bourgeois reality contact.
And perhaps, even a circumstance as if that Ryunoske Akutagava made his discoveries in the wrong order played its role here.
The creative way open to them in a bonding to enormous literary gift brought to him world glory. He is known all over the world and a circle of his readers continually expands. He is has a great success among readers in the Soviet Union. Experts and critics of literature carefully explore his creations, and in Japan one of the highest literary prizes – the Akutagawa award – is annually awarded to outstanding new writers.

Imagine that you have to break someone’s arm.
Right or left, doesn’t matter. The point is that you have to break it, because if you don’t… well, that doesn’t matter either. Let’s just say bad things will happen if you don’t.
Now, my question goes like this: do you break the arm quickly - snap, whoops, sorry, here let me help you with that improvised splint - or do you drag the whole business out for a good eight minutes, every now and then increasing the pressure in the tiniest of increments, until the pain becomes pink and green and hot and cold and altogether howlingly unbearable?
Well exactly. Of course. The right thing to do, the only thing to do, is to get it over with as quickly as possible. Break the arm, ply the brandy, be a good citizen. There can be no other answer.
Unless.
Unless unless unless.
What if you were to hate the person on the other end of thearm? I mean really,reallyhate them.
This was a thing I now had to consider.
I say now, meaning then, meaning the moment I am describing; the moment fractionally, oh so bloody fractionally, before my wrist reached the back of my neck and my left humerus broke into at least two, very possibly more, floppily joined-together pieces.
The arm we’ve been discussing, you see, is mine. It’s not an abstract, philosopher’s arm. The bone, the skin, the hairs, the small white scar on the point of the elbow, won from the corner of a storage heater at GateshillPrimary School - they all belong to me. And now is the moment when I must consider the possibility that the man standing behind me, gripping my wrist and driving it up my spine with an almost sexual degree of care, hates me. I mean, really,reallyhates me.
He is taking for ever.
His name was Rayner. First name unknown. By me, at any rate, and therefore, presumably, by you too.
I suppose someone, somewhere, must have known his first name - must have baptised him with it, called him down to breakfast with it, taught him how to spell it - and someone else must have shouted it across a bar with an offer of a drink, or murmured it during sex, or written it in a box on a life insurance application form. I know they must have done all these things. Just hard to picture, that’s all.
Rayner, I estimated, was ten years older than me. Which was fine. Nothing wrong with that. I have good, warm, non arm-breaking relationships with plenty of people who are ten years older than me. People who are ten years older than me are, by and large, admirable. But Rayner was also three inches taller than me, four stones heavier, and at least eight however-you-measure-violence units more violent. He was uglier than a car park, with a big, hairless skull that dipped and bulged like a balloon full of spanners, and his flattened, fighter’s nose, apparently drawn on his face by someone using their left hand, or perhaps even their left foot, spread out in a meandering, lopsided delta under the rough slab of his forehead.
And God Almighty, what a forehead. Bricks, knives, bottles and reasoned arguments had, in their time, bounced harmlessly off this massive frontal plane, leaving only the feeblest indentations between its deep, widely-spaced pores. They were, I think, the deepest and most widely-spaced pores I have ever seen in human skin, so that I found myself thinking back to the council putting-green in Dalbeattie, at the end of the long, dry summer of ‘76.
Moving now to the side elevation, we find that Rayner’s ears had, long ago, been bitten off and spat back on to the side of his head, because the left one was definitely upside down, or inside out, or something that made you stare at it for a long time before thinking ‘oh, it’s an ear’.
And on top of all this, in case you hadn’t got the message, Rayner wore a black leather jacket over a black polo-neck. But of course you would have got the message. Rayner could have swathed himself in shimmering silk and put an orchid behind each ear, and nervous passers-by would still have paid him money first and wondered afterwards whether they had owed him any.
As it happened, I didn’t owe him money. Rayner belonged to that select group of people to whom I didn’t owe anything at all, and if things had been going a little better between us, I might have suggested that he and his fellows have a special tie struck, to signify membership. A motif of crossed paths, perhaps.
But, as I said, things weren’t going well between us.
A one-armed combat instructor called Cliff (yes, I know - he taught unarmed combat, and he only had one arm - very occasionally life is like that) once told me that pain was a thing you did to yourself. Other people did things to you - they hit you, or stabbed you, or tried to break your arm - butpain was of your own making. Therefore, said Cliff, who had spent a fortnight inJapan and so felt entitled to unload dogshit of this sort on his eager charges, it was always within your power to stop your own pain. Cliff was killed in a pub brawl three months later by a fifty-five-year-old widow, so I don’t suppose I’ll ever have a chance to set him straight.
Pain is an event. It happens to you, and you deal with it in whatever way you can.
The only thing in my favour was that, so far, I hadn’t made any noise.
Nothing to do with bravery, you understand, I simply hadn’t got round to it. Up until this moment, Rayner and I had been pinging off the walls and furniture in a sweatily male silence, with only the occasional grunt to show that we were both still concentrating. But now, with not much more than five seconds to go before I passed out or the bone finally gave way - now was the ideal moment to introduce a new element. And sound was all I could think of.
So I inhaled deeply through my nose, straightened up to get as close as I could to his face, held the breath for a moment, and then let out what Japanese martial artists refer to as a kiai - you’d probably call it a very loud noise, and that wouldn’t be so far off - a scream of such blinding, shocking, what-the-fuck-was-that intensity, that I frightened myself quite badly.
On Rayner, the effect was pretty much as advertised, because he shifted involuntarily to one side, easing the grip on my arm for about a twelfth of a second. I threw my head back into his face as hard as I could, feeling the gristle in his nose adjust itself around the shape of my skull and a silky wetness spreading across my scalp, then brought my heel up towards his groin, scraping the inside of his thigh before connecting with an impressive bundle of genitalia. By the time the twelfth of a second had elapsed, Rayner was no longer breaking my arm, and I was aware, suddenly, of being drenched in sweat.
I backed away from him, dancing on my toes like a very old St Bernard, and looked around for a weapon.
The venue for this pro-am contest ofone fifteen -minute round was a small, inelegantly furnished sitting-room inBelgravia. The interior designer had done a perfectly horrible job, as all interior designers do, every single time, without fail, no exceptions - but at that moment his or her liking for heavy, portable objetshappened to coincide with mine. I selected an eighteen-inch Buddha from the mantelpiece with my good arm, and found that the little fellow’s ears afforded a satisfyingly snug grip for the one-handed player.
Rayner was kneeling now, vomiting on a Chinese carpet and improving its colour no end. I chose my spot, braced myself, and swung at him back-handed, plugging the corner of the Buddha’s plinth into the soft space behind his left ear. There was a dull, flat noise, of the kind that only human tissue under attack can make, and he rolled over on to his side.
I didn’t bother to see whether he was still alive. Callous, perhaps, but there you go.
I wiped some of the sweat from my face and walked through into the hall. I tried to listen, but if there was any sound from the house or from the street outside I would never have heard it, because my heart was going like a road drill. Or perhaps there really was a road drill outside. I was too busy sucking in great suitcase-sized chunks of air to notice.
I opened the front door and immediately felt cool drizzle on my face. It mingled with the sweat, diluting it, diluting the pain in my arm, diluting everything, and I closed my eyes and let it fall. It was one of the nicest things I’ve ever experienced. You may say that it’s a pretty poor life I’ve been leading. But then, you see, context is everything.
I left the door on the latch, stepped down on to the pavement and lit a cigarette. Gradually, grumpily, my heart sorted itself out, and my breathing followed at a distance. The pain in my arm was terrible, and I knew it would be with me for days, if not weeks, but at least it wasn’t my smoking arm.
I went back into the house and saw that Rayner was where I’d left him, lying in a pool of vomit. He was dead, or he wasgrievously-bodily-harmed, either of which meant at least five years. Ten, with time added on for bad behaviour. And this, from my point of view, was bad.
I’ve been in prison, you see. Only three weeks, and only on remand, but when you’ve had to play chess twice a day with a monosyllabic West Ham supporter, who has ‘HATE’ tattooed on one hand, and ‘HATE’ on the other - using a set missing six pawns, all the rooks and two of the bishops - you find yourself cherishing the little things in life. Like not being in prison.
I was contemplating these and related matters, and starting to think of all the hot countries I’d never got around to visiting, when I realised that that noise - that soft, creaking, shuffling, scraping noise - was definitely not coming from my heart. Nor from my lungs, nor from any other part of my yelping body. That noise was definitely external.
Someone, or something, was making an utterly hopeless job of coming down the stairs quietly.
I left the Buddha where it was, picked up a hideous alabaster table lighter and moved towards the door, which was also hideous. How can one make a hideous door? you may ask. Well, it takes some doing, certainly, but believe me, the top interior designers can knock off this kind of thing before breakfast.
I tried to hold my breath and couldn’t, so I waited noisily. A light switch flicked on somewhere, waited, then flicked off. A door opened, pause, nothing there either, closed. Stand still. Think. Try the sitting-room.
There was a rustle of clothing, a soft footfall, and then suddenly I found I was relaxing my grip on the alabaster lighter, and leaning back against the wall in something close to relief. Because even in my frightened, wounded state, I was ready to stake my life on the fact that Nina Ricci’s Fleur de Fleurs is just not a fighting scent.
She stopped in the doorway and looked around the room. The lights were out, but the curtains were wide open and there was plenty of light coming in from the street.
I waited until her gaze fell on Rayner’s body before I put my hand over her mouth.
We went through all the usual exchanges dictated byHollywood and polite society. She tried to scream and bite the palm of my hand, and I told her to be quiet because I wasn’t going to hurt her unless she shouted. She shouted and I hurt her. Pretty standard stuff, really.
By and by she was sitting on the hideous sofa with half a pint of what I thought was brandy but turned out to be Calvados, and I was standing by the door wearing my smartest and best ‘I am psychiatrically A1’ expression.
I’d rolled Rayner on to his side, into a kind of recovery position, to stop him from choking on his own vomit. Or anyone else’s, if it came to that. She’d wanted to get up and fiddle with him, to see if he was all right - pillows, damp cloths, bandages, all the things that help to make the bystander feel better - but I told her to stay where she was because I’d already called an ambulance, and all in all it would be better to leave him alone.
She had started to tremble slightly. It started in the hands, as they clutched the glass, then moved to her elbows and up to her shoulders, and it got worse every time she looked at Rayner. Of course, trembling is probably not an uncommon reaction to discovering a mixture of dead person and vomit on your carpet in the middle of the night, but I didn’t want her getting any worse. As I lit a cigarette with the alabaster lighter - and yes, even the flame was hideous - I tried to take in as much information as I could before the Calvados booted her up and she started asking questions.
I could see her face three times in that room: once in a silver-framed photograph on the mantelpiece, with her in Ray Bans, dangling from a ski-lift; once in a huge and terrible oil portrait, done by someone who can’t have liked her all that much, hanging by the window; and finally, and definitely the best of all, in a sofa ten feet away.
She couldn’t have been more than nineteen, with squareshoulders and long brown hair that waved and cheered as it disappeared behind her neck. The high, round cheek-bones implied Orientalness, but that disappeared as soon as you reached her eyes, which were also round, and large, and bright grey. If that makes any sense. She was wearing a red silk dressing-gown, and one elegant slipper with fancy gold thread across the toes. I glanced around the room, but its mate was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she could only afford one.
She cleared some husk from her throat. ‘Who is he?’ she said.
I think I’d known she was going to be American before she opened her mouth. Too healthy to be anything else. And where do they get those teeth?
‘His name was Rayner,’ I said, and then realised that this sounded a little thin as an answer, so I thought I’d add something. ‘He was a very dangerous man.’
‘Dangerous?’
She looked worried by that, and quite right too. It was probably crossing her mind, as it was crossing mine, that if Rayner was dangerous, and I’d killed him, then that, hierarchically-speaking, made me very dangerous.
‘Dangerous,’ I said again, and watched her closely as she looked away. She seemed to be trembling less, which was good. Or maybe her trembling had just fallen into sync with mine, so I noticed it less.
‘Well… what is he doing here?’ she said at last. ‘What did he want?’
‘It’s difficult to say.’ Difficult for me, at any rate. ‘Maybe he was after money, maybe the silver…’
‘You mean… he didn’t tell you?’ Her voice was suddenly loud. ‘You hit this guy, without knowing who he was? What he was doing here?’
Despite the shock, her brain seemed to be coming along pretty nicely.
‘I hit him because he was trying to kill me,’ I said. ‘I’m like that.’
I tried a roguish smile, then caught sight of it in the mirror over the mantelpiece and realised it hadn’t worked.
‘You’re like that,’ she repeated, unlovingly. ‘And who are you?’
Well now. I was going to have to wear some very soft shoes at this juncture. This was where things could suddenly get a lot worse than they already were.
I tried looking surprised, and perhaps just a little bit hurt. ‘You mean you don’t recognise me?’
‘No.,
‘Huh. Odd. Fincham. James Fincham.’ I held out my hand. She didn’t take it, so I converted the movement into a nonchalant brush of the hair.
‘That’s a name,’ she said. ‘That’s not who you are.’
‘I’m a friend of your father’s.’
She considered this for a moment. ‘Business friend?’
‘Sort of.’
‘Sort of.’ She nodded. ‘You’re James Fincham, you’re a sort of business friend of my father’s, and you’ve just killed a man in our house.’
I put my head on one side, and tried to show that yes, sometimes it’s an absolute bugger of a world.
She showed her teeth again.
‘And that’s it, is it? That’s your CV?’
I reprised the roguish smile, to no better effect. ‘Wait a second,’ she said.
She looked at Rayner, then suddenly sat up a little straighter, as if a thought had just struck her.
‘You didn’t call anybody, did you?’
Come to think of it, all things considered, she must have been nearer twenty-four.
‘You mean…’ I was floundering now.
‘I mean,’ she said, ‘there’s no ambulance coming here. Jesus.’
She put the glass down on the carpet by her feet, got up and walked towards the phone.
‘Look,’ I said, ‘before you do anything silly…’
I started to move towards her, but the way she spun round made me realise that staying still was probably the better plan. I didn’t want to be pulling bits of telephone receiver out of my face for the next few weeks.
‘You stay right there, Mr James Fincham,’ she hissed at me. ‘There’s nothing silly about this. I’m calling an ambulance, and I’m calling the police. This is an internationally approved procedure. Men come round with big sticks and take you away. Nothing silly about it at all.’
‘Look,’ I said, ‘I haven’t been entirely straight with you.’ She turned towards me and narrowed her eyes. If you know what I mean by that. Narrowed them horizontally, not vertically. I suppose one should say she shortened her eyes, but nobody ever does.
She narrowed her eyes.
‘What the hell do you mean "not entirely straight"? You only told me two things. You mean one of them was a lie?’ She had me on the ropes, there’s no question about that. I was in trouble. But then again, she’d only dialled the first nine.
‘My name is Fincham,’ I said, ‘and I do know your father.’
‘Yeah, what brand of cigarette does he smoke?’
‘Dunhill.’
‘Never smoked a cigarette in his life.’
She was late-twenties, possibly. Thirty at a pinch. I took a deep breath while she dialled the second nine.
‘All right, I don’t know him. But I am trying to help.’
‘Right. You’ve come to fix the shower.’
Third nine. Play the big card. ‘Someone is trying to kill him,’ I said.
There was a faint click and I could hear somebody, somewhere, asking which service we wanted. Very slowly she turned towards me, holding the receiver away from her face. ‘What did you say?’
‘Someone is trying to kill your father,’ I repeated. ‘I don’t know who, and I don’t know why. But I’m trying to stop them. That’s who I am, and that’s what I’m doing here.’
She looked at me long and hard. A clock ticked somewhere, hideously.
‘This man,’ I pointed at Rayner, ‘had something to do with it.’
I could see that she thought this unfair, as Rayner was hardly in a position to contradict me; so I softened my tone a little, looking around anxiously as if I was every bit as mystified and fretted-up as she was.
‘I can’t say he came here to kill,’ I said, ‘because we didn’t get a chance to talk much. But it’s not impossible.’ She carried on staring at me. The operator was squeaking hellos down the line and probably trying to trace the call.
She waited. For what, I’m not sure.
‘Ambulance,’ she said at last, still looking at me, and then turned away slightly and gave the address. She nodded, and then slowly, very slowly, put the receiver back on its cradle and turned to me. There was one of those pauses that you know is going to be long as soon as it starts, so I shook out another cigarette and offered her the packet.
She came towards me and stopped. She was shorter than she’d looked on the other side of the room. I smiled again, and she took a cigarette from the packet, but didn’t light it. She just played with it slowly, and then pointed a pair of grey eyes at me.
I say a pair. I mean her pair. She didn’t get a pair of someone else’s out from a drawer and point them at me. She pointed her own pair of huge, pale, grey, pale, huge eyes at me. The sort of eyes that can make a grown man talk gibberish to himself. Get a grip, for Christ’s sake.
‘You’re a liar,’ she said.
Not angry. Not scared. Just matter-of-fact. You’re a liar. ‘Well, yes,’ I said, ‘generally speaking, I am. But at this particular moment, I happen to be telling the truth.’
She kept on staring at my face, the way I sometimes do when I’ve finished shaving, but she didn’t seem to get any more answers than I ever have. Then she blinked once, and the blink seemed to change things somehow. Something had been released, or switched off, or at least turned down a bit. I started to relax.
‘Why would anyone want to kill my father?’ Her voice was softer now.
‘I honestly don’t know,’ I said. ‘I’ve only just found out he doesn’t smoke.’
She pressed straight on, as if she hadn’t heard me.
‘And tell me Mr Fincham,’ she said, ‘how you came by all this?’
This was the tricky bit. The really tricky bit. Trickiness cubed.
‘Because I was offered the job,’ I said.
She stopped breathing. I mean, she actually stopped breathing. And didn’t look as if she had any plans to start again in the near future.
I carried on, as calmly as I could.
‘Someone offered me a lot of money to kill your father,’ I said, and she frowned in disbelief. ‘I turned it down.’
I shouldn’t have added that. I really shouldn’t.
Newton’s Third Law of Conversation, if it existed, would hold that every statement implies an equal and opposite statement. To say that I’d turned the offer down raised the possibility that I might not have done. Which was not a thing I wanted floating round the room at this moment. But she started breathing again, so maybe she hadn’t noticed.
‘Why?’
‘Why what?’
Her left eye had a tiny streak of green that went off from the pupil in a north-easterly direction. I stood there, looking into her eyes and trying not to, because I was in terrible trouble at this moment. In lots of ways.
‘Why’d you turn it down?’
‘Because…’ I began, then stopped, because I had to get this absolutely right.
‘Yes?’
‘Because I don’t kill people.’
There was a pause while she took this in and swilled it round her mouth a few times. Then she glanced over at Rayner’s body.
‘I told you,’ I said. ‘He started it.’
She stared into me for another three hundred years and then, still turning the cigarette slowly between her fingers, moved away towards the sofa, apparently deep in thought.
‘Honestly,’ I said, trying to get a hold of myself and the situation. ‘I’m nice. I give to Oxfam, I recycle newspapers, everything.’
She reached Rayner’s body and stopped. ‘So when did all this happen?’
‘Well… just now,’ I stammered, like an idiot.
She closed her eyes for a moment. ‘I mean you getting asked.’
‘Right,’ I said. ‘Ten days ago.’
‘Where?’
‘Amsterdam.’
‘Holland, right?’
That was a relief. That made me feel a lot better. It’s nice to be looked up to by the young every now and then. You don’t want it all the time, just every now and then.
‘Right,’ I said.
‘And who was it offered you the job?’
‘Never seen him before or since.’
She stooped for the glass, took a sip of Calvados and grimaced at the taste of it.
‘And I’m supposed to believe this?’
‘Well…’
‘I mean, help me out here,’ she said, starting to get louder again. She nodded towards Rayner. ‘We have a guy here, who isn’t going to back up your story, I wouldn’t say, and I’m supposed to believe you because of what? Because you have a nice face?’
I couldn’t help myself. I should have helped myself, I know, but I just couldn’t.
‘Why not?’ I said, and tried to look charming. ‘I’d believeanything you said.’
Terrible mistake. Really terrible. One of the crassest, most ridiculous remarks I’ve ever made, in a long, ridiculous-remark-packed life.
She turned to me, suddenly very angry. ‘You can drop that shit right now.’
‘All I meant…’ I said, but I was glad when she cut me off, because I honestly didn’t know what I’d meant.
‘I said drop it. There’s a guy dying in here.’
I nodded, guiltily, and we both bowed our heads at Rayner, as if paying our respects. And then she seemed to snap the hymn book shut and move on. Her shoulders relaxed, and she held out the glass to me.
‘I’m Sarah,’ she said. ‘See if you can get me a Coke.’
She did ring the police eventually, and they turned up just as the ambulance crew were scooping Rayner, apparently still breathing, on to a collapsible stretcher. They hummed and barred, and picked things up off the mantelpiece and looked at the underneath, and generally had that air of wanting to be somewhere else.
Policemen, as a rule, don’t like to hear of new cases. Not because they’re lazy, but because they want, like everyone else, to find a meaning, a connectedness, in the great mess of random unhappiness in which they work. If, in the middle of trying to catch some teenager who’s been nicking hub-caps, they’re called to the scene of a mass murder, they just can’t stop themselves from checking under the sofa to see if there are any hub-caps there. They want to find something that connects to what they’ve already seen, that will make sense out of the chaos. So they can say to themselves, this happened because that happened. When they don’t find it - when all they see is another lot of stuff that has to be written about, and filed, and lost, and found in someone’s bottom drawer, and lost again, and eventually chalked up against no one’s name - they get, well, disappointed.
They were particularly disappointed by our story. Sarah and I had rehearsed what we thought was a reasonable scenario, and we played three performances of it to officers of ascending rank, finishing up with an appallingly young inspector who said his name was Brock.
Brock sat on the sofa, occasionally glancing at his fingernails, and nodded his youthful way through the story of the intrepid James Fincham, friend of the family, staying in the spare-room on the first floor. Heard noises, crept downstairs to investigate, nasty man in leather jacket and black polo-neck, no never seen him before, fight, fall over, oh my god, hit head. Sarah Woolf, d.o.b.29th August, 1964, heard sounds of struggle, came down, saw the whole thing. Drink, Inspector? Tea? Ribena?
Yes, of course, the setting helped. If we’d tried the same story in a council flat in Deptford, we’d have been on the floor of the van in seconds, asking fit young men with short hair if they wouldn’t mind getting off our heads for a moment while we got comfortable. But in leafy, stuccoedBelgravia, the police are more inclined to believe you than not. I think it’s included in the rates.
As we signed our statements, they asked us not to do anything silly like leave the country without informing the local station, and generally encouraged us to abide at every opportunity.
Two hours after he’d tried to break my arm, all that was left of Rayner, first name unknown, was a smell.
I let myself out of the house, and felt the pain creep back to centre stage as I walked. I lit a cigarette and smoked my way down to the corner, where I turned left into a cobbled mews that had once housed horses. It’d have to be an extremely rich horse who could afford to live here now, obviously, but the stabling character of the mews had hung about the place, and that’s why it had felt right to tether the bike there. With a bucket of oats and some straw under the back wheel.
The bike was where I’d left it, which sounds like a dull remark, but isn’t these days. Among bikers, leaving yourmachine in a dark place for more than an hour, even with padlock and alarm, and finding it still there when you come back, is something of a talking point. Particularly when the bike is a Kawasaki ZZR 1100.
Now I won’t deny that the Japanese were well off-side atPearl Harbor, and that their ideas on preparing fish for the table are undoubtedly poor - but by golly, they do know some things about making motorcycles. Twist the throttle wide open in any gear on this machine, and it’d push your eyeballs through the back of your head. All right, so maybe that’s not a sensation most people are looking for in their choice of personal transport, but since I’d won the bike in a game of backgammon, getting home with an outrageously flukey only-throw 4-1 and three consecutive double sixes, I enjoyed it a lot. It was black, and big, and it allowed even the average rider to visit other galaxies.
I started the motor, revved it loud enough to wake a few fat Belgravian financiers, and set off for Notting Hill. I had to take it easy in the rain, so there was plenty of time for reflection on the night’s business.
The one thing that stayed in my mind, as I jinked the bike along the slick, yellow-lit streets, was Sarah telling me to drop ‘that shit’. And the reason I had to drop it was because there was a dying man in the room.
Newtonian Conversation, I thought to myself. The implication was that I could have kept on holding that shit, if the room hadn’t had a dying man in it.
That cheered me up. I started to think that if I couldn’t work things so that one day she and I would be together in a room with no dying men in it at all, then my name isn’t James Fincham.
Which, of course, it isn’t.

I was shown into a room. A red room. Red wallpaper, red curtains, red carpet. They said it was a sitting-room, but I don’t know why they’d decided to confine its purpose just to sitting. Obviously, sitting was one of the things you could do in a room this size; but you could also stage operas, hold cycling races, and have an absolutely cracking game of frisbee, all at the same time, without having to move any of the furniture.
It could rain in a room this big.
I hung about by the door for a while, looking at paintings, the undersides of ashtrays, that kind of thing, then got bored and set off towards the fireplace at the other end. Half-way there I had to stop and sit down, because I’m not as young as I was, and as I did so, another set of double-doors opened, and some muttering took place between a Carl and a major-domo figure in striped grey trousers and black jacket.
Both of them glanced in my direction every once in a while, and then the Carl nodded his head and backed out of the room.
The major-domo started towards me, pretty casually I thought, and called out at the two hundred metre mark: ‘Would you care for a drink, Mr Lang?’
I didn’t have to think about this for very long. ‘Scotch, please,’ I called back.
That’d teach him.
At one hundred metres, he stopped at a frequent table and opened a small silver box, pulling out a cigarette without even looking down to see if there were any in there. He lit it, and kept on coming.
As he got nearer, I could see that he was in his fifties, good-looking in an indoor kind of way, and that his face had a strange sheen to it. The reflections of standard-lamps and chandeliers danced across his forehead, so that he seemed almost to sparkle as he moved. Yet somehow I knew it wasn’t sweat, nor oil; it was just a sheen.
With ten yards still to go, he smiled at me and held out a hand, and kept it there as he came so that before I’d realised it, I was on my feet, ready to receive him like an old friend.
His grip was hot but dry, and he clasped me by the elbow and steered me back on to the sofa, sliding down next to me so that our knees were almost touching. If he always sat this close to visitors, then I have to say he was simply not getting his money’s worth out of his room.
‘Murder,’ he said.
There was a pause. I’m sure you’ll understand why. ‘I beg your pardon?’ I said.
‘ Naimh Murdah,’ he said, then watched patiently while I readjusted the spelling in my head. ‘A great pleasure. Great pleasure.’
His voice was soft, his accent educated. I had the feeling that he’d be just as good in a dozen other languages. He flicked some ash from his cigarette vaguely in the direction of a bowl, then leaned towards me.
‘Russell has told me a lot about you. And I must say, I’ve been cheering for you very much.’
Close up, there were two things I could tell about Mr Murdah: he was not the major-domo; and the sheen on his face was money.
It wasn’t caused by money, or bought with money. It simply was money. Money that he’d eaten, worn, driven, breathed, in such quantities, and for so long, that it had started to secrete from the pores of his skin. You may not think this possible, but money had actually made him beautiful.
He was laughing.
‘Very much indeed, yes. You know, Russell is a very considerable person. Very considerable indeed. But sometimes I think it does him good to become frustrated. He has a tendency, I would say, towards arrogance. And you, Mr Lang, I have the feeling that you are good for such a man.’
Dark eyes. Incredibly dark eyes. With dark edges to the lids, which ought to have been make-up but wasn’t.
‘You, I think,’ said Murdah, still beaming, ‘you frustrate many people. I think perhaps that is why God put you here among us, Mr Lang. Wouldn’t you say?’
And I laughed back. Fuck knows why, because he hadn’t said anything funny. But there I was, chuckling away like a drunk simpleton.
A door opened somewhere, and then suddenly a tray of whisky was between us, borne by a maid dressed in black. We took a glass each, and the maid waited while Murdah drowned his in soda, and I just got mine slightly damp. She left without a smile, or a nod. Without uttering a sound.
I took a deep slug of Scotch and felt drunk almost before I’d swallowed.
‘You’re an arms dealer,’ I said.
I don’t know quite what reaction I expected, but I expected something. I thought he might flinch, or blush, or get angry,orhave me shot, tick any of the above, but there was nothing. Not even a pause. He continued as if he’d known for years what I was going to say.
‘I am indeed, Mr Lang. For my sins.’
Wow, I thought. That was extremely cute. I am an arms dealer for my sins. That was every bit as rich as he was. He lowered his eyes with apparent modesty.
‘I buy and sell arms, yes,’ he said. ‘I must say, I think, successfully. You, of course, disapprove of me, as do many of your countrymen, and this is one of the penalties of my profession. Something that I must bear, if I can.’
I suppose he was making fun of me, but it didn’t sound that way. It really did sound as if my disapproval made him unhappy.
‘I have examined my life, and my behaviour, with the help of many friends who are religious people. And I believe I can answer to God. In fact - if I can anticipate your questions - I believe I canonlyanswer to God. So do you mind if we move on?’ He smiled again. Warm, charmingly apologetic. He dealt with me like a man who’s used to dealing with people like me - as if he was a polite film star, and I’d asked him for an autograph at a tricky moment.
‘Nice furniture,’ I said.
We were taking a tour of the room. Stretching our legs, filling our lungs, digesting some huge meal we hadn’t eaten. To finish the picture, we really needed a couple of dogs mucking about at our ankles, and a gate to lean on. We didn’t have them, so I was trying to make do with the furniture.
‘It’s a Boulle,’ said Murdah, pointing at the large wooden cabinet under my elbow. I nodded, the same way I nod when people tell me the names of plants, and politely bent my head to the intricate brass inlay.
‘They take a sheet of veneer and a sheet of brass, glue them together, then cut the pattern right through. That one,’ he pointed towards an apparently related cabinet, ‘is a contre Boulle. You see? An exact negative. Nothing wasted.’
I nodded thoughtfully, and looked back and forth at the two pieces, and tried to imagine how many motorbikes I’d need to own before I decided to start spending money on stuff like this.
Murdahhad done enough walking, apparently, and peeled off back towards the sofa. The way he moved seemed to say that the pleasantries box was almost empty.
‘Two opposite images of the same object, Mr Lang,’ he said, reaching for another cigarette. ‘You might say, if you like, that those two cabinets resemble our little problem.’
‘I might, yes.’ I waited, but he wasn’t ready to expand. ‘Of course, I’d need to know roughly what you’re talking about first.’
He turned to me. The sheen was still there, and so were the indoor good-looks. But the chumminess was dying away, sputtering in the grate and warming nobody.
‘I’m talking, Mr Lang, about Graduate Studies, obviously.’ He looked surprised.
‘Obviously,’ I said.
‘I have an involvement,’ said Murdah, ‘with a certain group of people.’
He was standing in front of me now, his hands held wide in that welcome-to-my-vision gesture that politicians like to use these days, while I lounged on the sofa. Otherwise little had changed, except that someone was cooking fishfingers near by. It was a smell that didn’t quite belong in this room.
‘These people,’ he continued, ‘are, in many cases, friends of mine. People with whom I have done business over many, many years. They are people who trust me, who rely on me. You understand?’
Of course, he wasn’t asking me if I understood the specific relationship. He just wanted to know if words like Trust and Reliability still had any meaning down where I lived. I nodded to show that yes, I could spell them in an emergency.
‘As an act of friendship towards these people, I have taken something of a risk. Which is rare for me.’ This, I think, was a joke, so I smiled, which seemed to satisfy him. ‘I have personally underwritten the sale of a quantity of merchandise.’ He paused and looked at me, wanting some
reaction. ‘I think perhaps you are familiar with the nature of the product?’
‘Helicopters,’ I said. There didn’t seem to be any point in playing stupid at this stage.
‘Helicopters, precisely,’ said Murdah. ‘I must tell you that I dislike the things myself, but I am told that they perform some functions extremely well.’ He was starting to go a little fey on me, I thought - affecting a distaste for the vulgar, oily machines that had paid for this house and, for all I knew, a dozen more like it - so I decided to try and blunt things up a bit, on behalf of the common man.
‘They certainly do,’ I said. ‘The ones you’re selling could destroy an average-size village in under a minute. Along with all its inhabitants, obviously.’
He closed his eyes for a second, as if the very thought of such a thing gave him pain, which, perhaps, it did. If so, it wasn’t for long.
‘As I said, Mr Lang, I don’t believe I have to justify myself to you. I am not concerned with the use to which this merchandise is eventually put. My concern, for the sake of my friends, and for myself, is that the merchandise should find customers.’ He clasped his hands together and waited. As if the whole thing was now my problem.
‘So advertise,’ I said, after a while. ‘Back pages ofWoman’s Own.’
‘ Hm,’he said. Like I was an idiot. ‘You are not a businessman, Mr Lang.’
I shrugged.
‘I am, you see,’ he continued. ‘So I think you must trust me to know my own market-place.’ A thought seemed to strike him. ‘After all, I wouldn’t presume to advise you on the best way…’And then he realised he was in a jam, because there was nothing on my CV to indicate that I knew the best way to do anything.
‘To ride a motorcycle?’ I offered, gallantly. He smiled.
‘As you say.’ He sat down on the sofa again. Further away, this time. ‘The product I am dealing with requires a more sophisticated approach, I think, than the pages ofWoman’s Own.If you are making a new mousetrap, then, as you say, you advertise it as a new mousetrap. If, on the other hand,’ he held out his other hand, to show me what another hand looked like, ‘you are trying to sell a snake trap, then your first task is to demonstrate why snakes are bad things. Why they need to be trapped. Do you follow me? Then, much, much later, you come along with your product. Does that make sense to you?’ He smiled patiently.
‘So,’ I said, ‘you’re going to sponsor a terrorist act, and let your little toy do its business on thenine o’clock news. I know all this. Rusty knows that I know all this.’ I glanced at my watch, trying to make it look as if I had another arms dealer to see in ten minutes. But Murdah was not a man to be hurried, or slowed down.
‘That, in essence, is precisely what I intend to do,’ he said. ‘And I come into this where, exactly? I mean, now that you’ve told me, what am I supposed to do with the information? Put it in my diary? Write a song about it? What?’
Murdahlooked at me for a moment, then took in a deep breath and pushed it out gently and carefully through his nose, as if he’d had lessons in how to breathe.
‘You, Mr Lang, are going to carry out this terrorist act for us.’
Pause. Long pause. A feeling of horizontal vertigo. The walls of this massive room shooting inwards, then out again, making me feeling smaller, and punier, than I’ve ever felt. ‘Aha,’ I said.
Another pause. The smell of fishfingers was stronger than ever.
‘Do I have a say in this, by any chance?’ I croaked. My throat was giving me trouble, for some reason. ‘I mean, if I were to say, for example, fuck you and all your relatives, roughly what could I expect to happen, at today’s prices?’
It was Murdah’s turn to do the glancing-at-the-watch bit. He seemed to have grown suddenly bored, and wasn’t smiling at all any more.
‘That, Mr Lang, is not an option that I think you should waste any time considering.’
I felt cooler air on my neck, and twisted round to see that Barnes and Lucas were standing by the door. Barnes looked relaxed. Lucas didn’t. Murdah nodded, and the two Americans stepped forward, coming each side of the sofa to join him. Facing me. Murdah held out a hand, palm up, in front of Lucas, without looking at him.
Lucas slid back the flap of his jacket and pulled out an automatic. A Steyr, I think. 9mm. Not that it matters. He placed the gun gently in Murdah’s hand, then turned towards me, his eyes widened by the pressure of some message that I couldn’t decipher.
‘Mr Lang,’ said Murdah, ‘you have the safety of two people to think about. Your own, of course, and Miss Woolf’s. I don’t know what value you place on your own safety, but I think it would be only gallant if you were to consider hers. And I want you to consider hers very deeply.’ He beamed suddenly, as if the worst was over. ‘But, of course, I don’t expect you to do it without good reason.’
As he spoke, he cocked the hammer, and lifted his chin towards me, the gun loose in his hand. Sweat spurted from the palms of my hands and my throat wouldn’t work. I waited. Because that was all I could do.
Murdahconsidered me for a moment. Then he reached out, pressed the muzzle of the gun to the side of Lucas’s neck, and fired twice.
It happened so fast, was so unexpected, was so absurd, that for a tenth of a second I wanted to laugh. There were three men standing there, then there was a bang bang, and then there were two. It was actually funny.
I realised that I’d wet myself. Not much. But enough.
I blinked once, and saw that Murdah had handed the gun to Barnes, who was signalling towards the door behind my head.
‘Why did he do that? Why would anyone do such a terrible thing?’
It should have been my voice, but it wasn’t. It was Murdah’s. Soft and calm, utterly in control. ‘It was a terrible thing, Mr Lang,’ he said. ‘Terrible. Terrible, because it had no reason. And we must always try and find a reason for death. Don’t you agree?’
I looked up at his face, but couldn’t focus on it. It came and went, like his voice, which was in my ear and miles away at the same time.
‘Well, let us say that although he had no reason to die, I had a reason to kill him. That is better, I think. I killed him, Mr Lang, to show you one thing. And one thing only.’ He paused. ‘To show you that I could.’
He looked down at Lucas’s body, and I followed his gaze. It was a foul sight. The muzzle had been so close to the flesh that the expanding gases had chased the bullet in, swelling and blackening the wound horribly. I couldn’t look at it for long.
‘Do you understand what I’m saying?’
He was leaning forward, with his head on one side.
‘This man,’ said Murdah, was an accredited American diplomat, an employee of the US State Department. He had, I’m sure, many friends, a wife, perhaps even children. So it would not be possible, surely, for such a man to disappear, just like that? To vanish?’
Men were stooping in front of me, their jackets rustling as they strained to move Lucas’s body. I forced myself to listen to Murdah.
‘I want you to see the truth, Mr Lang. And the truth is that if I wish him to disappear, then it is so. I shoot a man here, in my own house, I let him bleed on my own carpet, because it is my wish. And no one will stop me. No police, no secret agents, no friends of Mr Lucas’s. And certainly not you. Do you hear me?’
I looked up at him again, and saw his face more clearly.
The dark eyes. The sheen. He straightened his tie.
‘Mr Lang,’ he said, ‘have I given you a reason to think about Miss Woolf’s safety?’
I nodded.
They drove me back toLondon, pressed into the carpet of the Diplomat, and chucked me out somewhere south of the river. I went over Waterloo Bridge and along the Strand, stopping every now and then for no reason, occasionally dropping coins into the hands of eighteen-year-old beggars, and wanting this piece of reality to be a dream more than I’ve ever wanted any dream to become reality.
Mike Lucas had told me to be careful. He’d taken a risk, telling me to be careful. I didn’t know the man, and I hadn’t asked him to take the risk for me, but he’d done it anyway because he was a decent professional who didn’t like the places his work was taking him, and didn’t want me to be taken there too.
Bang bang.
No going back. No stopping the world.
I was feeling sorry for myself. Sorry for Mike Lucas, sorry for the beggars too, but very sorry indeed for myself, and that had to stop. I started to walk home.
I no longer had any reason to worry about being at the flat, since all the people I’d had breathing down my neck over the last week were now breathing in my face. The chance to sleep in my own bed was just about the only good thing to come out of all this. So I strode out for Bayswater at a good pace, and as I walked, I tried to see the funny side.
It wasn’t easy, and I’m still not sure that I managed it properly, but it’s just something I like to do when things aren’t going well. Because what does it mean, to say that things aren’t going well? Compared to what? You can say: compared to how things were going a couple of hours ago, or a couple of years ago. But that’s not the point. If two cars are speeding towards a brick wall with no brakes, and one car hits the wall moments before the other, you can’t spend those moments saying that the second car is much better off than the first.
Death and disaster are at our shoulders every second of our lives, trying to get at us. Missing, a lot of the time. A lot of miles on the motorway without a front wheel blow-out. A lot of viruses that slither through our bodies without snagging. A lot of pianos that fall a minute after we’ve passed. Or a month, it makes no difference.
So unless we’re going to get down on our knees and give thanks every time disaster misses, it makes no sense to moan when it strikes. Us, or anyone else. Because we’re not comparing it with anything.
And anyway, we’re all dead, or never born, and the whole thing really is a dream.
There, you see. That’s a funny side.

Люди, кто на десять лет старше тебя, в большинстве своем, замечательные. А Райнер, кроме того, был на восемь сантиметров выше меня, тяжелее килограмм на десять и на восемь, в чем бы вы не оценивали уровень жестокости, агрессивнее. Выглядел он, хуже, чем парковка в час пик, с выдающимися голыми скулами, что - то впадали, то вновь появлялись, как шар набитый гаечными ключами, расплющенный нос, превратившийся в извилистую фигуру, как бывает после удара левой руки, а может ноги, в добавок к этому козырек из монолитного лба.
Боже мой, какой лоб. Кирпичи, ножи, бутылки и все аргументы в свое время были отметены этой массивной фронтальной плитой, оставив на ней только слабые отметины среди выделяющихся, хаотично разбросанных пор лица. Я думаю, это самые глубокие и хаотично разбросанные дыры, которые я когда-либо видел на человеческой коже, в голову сразу полезли мысли о Муниципальной лужайке для гольфа в Долбитти, конец затянувшегося, сухого лета 1976 года.

Посему, сказал Клифф, который провел две недели в японском плену и вправе делать выводы подобного рода, только ты в силах побороть боль. Клифф был убит три месяца спустя в драке пятидесятилетней вдовой в баре, так что не думаю, что когда-нибудь у меня будет шанс расспросить его поподробней.
Боль - это событие, и только ты сможешь преодолеть его.

Резко запрокинув голову назад, я что есть силы врезал по его лицу затылком, почувствовав, как хрустнул его нос и, затылок тут же обволокла теплая жижа. Немедля, нога, проскользнув вдоль бедра, беспардонно ударила его в пах. Ну вот, доли еще не сложились в секунду, а Райнер уже не ломает мне руку, и я пыхчу в поту.
Я отполз от него на пару шагов, прихрамывая как мудрый монах, в попытке найти какое-либо оружие.
Вот уже как пятнадцать минут мы находились в безвкусно обставленной гостиной в районе Белгравии. Дизайнер интерьера поработал хуже некуда. Все, без исключения, они не умеют работать, но здесь её или его видение тяжелых портативных предметов в интерьере совпало с моим. Мой выбор пал на сорока сантиметровую статую Будды, стоящую на каменном столе и я был приятно удивлен, обнаружив, как удобно она лежит в руке.
Стоя на коленях, Райнера тошнило на китайский ковер, рвота только приукрасила узор. Я подошел, собрался с духом, и замахнувшись обеими руками, обрушил Будду на голову Райнера, прямо позади левого уха. Раздался тупой, приглушенный звук из разряда, что тело человека может воспроизвести от удара, и он завалился на бок.
Я даже не стал смотреть мертв он или нет. Бессердечно, скажите вы, что ж, вам виднее.
Я вытер пот с лица и заковылял в зал. Я пытался вслушиваться, но если и были какие-либо звуки в квартире или на улице, я бы их не услышал: сердце мое билось как заведенное. А может то был отбойник с улицы. Я был слишком занят глотанием воздуха, чтобы выяснять.
Открыв входную дверь, меня тут же обдуло прохладным ветром. Ветер смешался с потом, снимая его с моего тела, снимая боль с руки, боль со всего тела, и я в блаженстве закрыл глаза. Видите ли, мне уже приходилось бывать в тюрьме. Конечно, всего три недели предварительного заключения, но я вам так скажу, поиграв в шахматы без шести пешек, всех ладей и двух слонов с немногословным Пожирателем ветчины, на обоих плечах которого набито "Ненавижу", - вы начнете ценить радости жизни. Да, все-таки, я люблю свободу.
Пока я думал над этими аспектами своего положения, вспоминал все жаркие страны, в которых еще не был, я осознал, что звук, это мягкое, скрипяще-шаркающее шуршание исходило точно не из сердца. Ни легкие, ни какая- либо другая часть моего дряхлого тела. Звук был точно посторонний.

Thank you for this opportunity to present to you a plead directly.
I am honoured to be member of the advisory board of the SOLNCE school located in Kazan, Kavi Nadzhmi street, 18, headed by Pavel Shmakov. The SOLNCE school has become a true educational centre of excellence, well recognised as such in Kazan and beyond. Thank you for having positively responded to a prevous plead and for supporting with a high-level decision that this school can undergo the necessary renovation works (sports hall, biology and chemistry teaching rooms etc) in order to meet all the formal standards and requirements. Unfortunately, at the level of implementing these works, delays and many administrative hurdles have been encountered such that to this day the necessary works have not yet been done. Kindly allow me to plead once again for your high level support, such that the school's wonderful educational success story in Kazan can continue.
I am very grateful for your support and would be happy to support from this side any partnering efforts that may be envisaged between Kazan and Braunschweig, my city of origin in Germany.

Школа SOLNCE стала образцовым, известным и признанным образовательным центром, в городе Казань и за его пределами. Благодарю вас за то, что вы с участием и усердием на самом высшем уровне отнеслись к моей просьбе о том, что школа нуждается в некоторых реконструкциях (спортивного зала, кабинетов биологии и химии и т.д.), с целью соответствовать всем необходимым стандартам и требованиям. Type of project/activity:
Mid-term evaluation as part of the European Training Foundation team.
Background:
The ETF is responsible for the “content monitoring” of the Tacis project “Vocational Education and Training linked to the development of SMEs in Kazakhstan”.
Through its “content monitoring” services, the ETF pays special attention to the content and quality aspects of projects and processes, and is able to appreciate the relations between the project’s achievements and the environment conditions, the appropriateness of the inputs against the expected objectives and results.
Main activities:
An eight day mission was undertaken to Kazakhstan late April 2004 to carry out the mid-term review.
It involved meetings with the most important project stakeholders:
1) in Almaty, the Delegation, the National Observatory, the Teacher training institute; 2) in Astana the Ministry of Education, the Academy of Education, 3) in one of the pilot regions, the VET schools, the employers and the local authorities.
The purpose was to highlight the strong and weak aspects of the project and make recommendations to the EC Delegation in Kazakhstan to redirect it where necessary.
The mid-term review concentrated on content issues, and sought to appreciate the project in its global political environment.
The objective was to assess whether the project objectives were still relevant or should be adjusted in the light of the changes taking place in the project environment and in education and training policy developments.

С помощью “контроля информации”, Европейский Фонд Образования уделяет особое внимание содержанию и аспектам качества проектов и процессов, и в состоянии оценить взаимосвязь между реализацией проекта и условиями окружающей среды, целесообразность поставленных задач и результатов.
Основная деятельность:
Восьми дневная миссия проведена в Казахстане в конце Апреля 2011 года для создания промежуточного анализа.
Процесс создания включил в себя встречи с наиболее важными участниками проекта:
1) в Алматы, Делегация, Национальная обсерватория, Институт повышения квалификации; 2) в Астане, Министерство образования, Академия образования, 3) в одном из пилотных регионов, профессиональные учебные заведения, работодатели и местные органы власти.
С целью повторного рассмотрения аспектов проекта и создания рекомендаций для делегации ЕС в Казахстане с соответствующей корректировкой.
Промежуточный анализ сфокусирован на первостепенных вопросах, и с целью оценить проект в мировом политическом пространстве.
Предметом работы было выяснить, достигнуты ли цели проекта, являются они по-прежнему актуальными или должны быть скорректированы в свете последних изменений, связанных с условиями проекта, сферой образования и политикой подготовки кадров.
