Texto de origen - inglés 21st century cloister and tower
Paulo Ludgero interplays with past and present
Located along a green, quiet street in Foz , the impressive presence of the house with its minimalist approach and contemporary freshness, immediately catches the strollers eye.
Paulo Ludgero, who designed the house, its interior and some of the furniture, created in this house an intricate interplay, using architectural elements and layouts as tools in three dimensional composition that doesn’t seize to surprise.
The journey, in and through the four story private residence, begins from the outside. The well balanced façade of the house, creates an illusion of proportion. A journey from the outside to the inside creates a descending path that reaches the entrance, located in the shorter facet of the rectangular mass. Upon entering, a strong spatial experience occurs as the full height, four story white space criss-crossed by bridges and a square spiral staircase, is illuminated by a full ceiling skylight - “a typical Porto feature” says Paulo Ludgero. The entry space, also marked vertically by a 9 meter painting located opposite the staircase, creates a dramatic preview to the rest of the house. On the roof, surrounding the monumental space, is a roof-garden planted with bio-products and plants, where a beautiful scenery of the ocean can be viewed.
The design tries to unite together two architectural concepts originating in the middle ages: the tower (the house) and the cloister (the garden with the swimming pool). Paulo Ludgero describes them as "two opposite essences. In the past, one was built for security and the other for contemplation. I think that there exists a hidden tension between those two complementing ideas – presence and absence, object and space".
These interplays occur again and again in the house, turning it into a wonderful living experience. The tension, created by the relation of elements to one another, is noticeable also in the choice of furniture, the art collection, all ranging from antique to contemporary, blending marvelously in the living spaces. The methods of construction that Paulo Ludgero had incorporated answer to the same concept. The two full height, long, lateral concrete walls that accompany us from the entrance space to the garden façade, were also constructed in reference to antiquity. The garden façade, is perforated by large windows with full frame wooden shutters, leaving the exterior “looking like a true fortress when shut”. The design of the ceiling of the living spaces is also exceptional, being detached from the walls and curving surprisingly towards the windows. The ceiling, again, serves as a tool to break the relatively high spaces and create a cozy and soft ambience.
The interplay that Paulo Ludgero creates is definitely coherent in every aspect of the architecture, making the house an unforgettable experience, while being very livable.
