En nuestro laboratorio del Instituto Cajal, venimos investigando cuáles son los mecanismos celulares y moleculares subyacentes a los efectos de las hormonas gonadales sobre el cerebro. Nos hemos concentrado particularmente en el estudio de la modulación, por las hormonas gonadales, de los procesos de formación y mantenimiento de las sinápsis (conexiones entre las neuronas, por las que se transmite el impulso nervioso) puesto que el patrón de organización de estas conexiones es el que determina, en último término, la función cerebral.
Nuestros estudios indican que, en ciertas zonas del cerebro, las hormonas gonadales modulan el número de conexiones que una neurona recibe, en particular las conexiones inhibitorias mediadas por el ácido gamma aminobutirico (GABA). Esta modulación del número de conexiones puede realizarse durante el desarrollo, resultando en diferencias sexuales en la conectividad neuronal que se manifiestan funcionalmente con la aparición de la pubertad. Pero las hormonas gonadales también afectan las conexiones entre las neuronas en la vida adulta.
Por ejemplo, como resultado de las variaciones en los niveles hormonales, las conexiones neuronales se reorganizan con la menstruación en ciertas neuronas del hipotálamo y también en neuronas de otras partes del cerebro de la rata que no están directamente asociadas con la reproducción. En resumen, las hormonas gonadales, además de inducir una diferenciación sexual anatómica de ciertas zonas del sistema nervioso, parecen ser capaces de modular, en la vida adulta, los mecanismos íntimos de funcionamiento cerebral en zonas relacionadas con la regulación interna de la secreción hormonal y también en otras zonas cerebrales que pueden influenciar nuestro humor, comportamiento, agresividad, actividad intelectual y salud mental.

Our current research project in our laboratory at the Instituto Cajal aims to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms which lie behind the effects of sex hormones on the brain. We have concentrated primarily on the study of how sex hormones affect the formation and maintenance of synapses (connections between neurons through which nerve impulses are transmitted), given that the organisational pattern of these connections is ultimately what governs brain function.
Our studies suggest that, in certain areas of the brain, sex hormones control the number of connections any one neuron receives, particularly the inhibitory connections controlled by gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA). The number of connections may be determined during development, resulting in sex differences in neuronal connectivity which are expressed functionally at the onset of puberty. But sex hormones also affect neuron connections in adult life. In rats, for example, as a result of variation in hormone levels, the onset of menstruation causes a reorganisation of connections in certain neurons in the hypothalamus, as well as neurons in other parts of the brain which are not directly associated with reproduction. Similar results have been observed in primate brains, suggesting a strong possibility that they also occur in humans.
It seems that this adjustment in the processes of neurotransmission results from a modification in the relationships between neurons and their adjacent cells, the neuroglia. These cells play a role in many of the essential processes of the nervous system, and they are able to metabolise sex hormones to produce new molecules called neurosteroids, which seem to have a significant influence on the processes of neurotransmission, including changes in the sensitivity of neurons to GABA.
Although it has yet to be established whether the findings in animals also apply to humans, there is no doubt that research into the action mechanisms of sex hormones in the brain will contribute to a greater understanding of the normal function of the brain, as well as its reaction to pathological conditions, given that the actions of sex hormones in the brain can be closely associated with the appearance and/or manifestation of various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
In short, in addition to controlling anatomical differences between the sexes in certain areas of the nervous system, it seems that in adult life sex hormones are also able to control fundamental mechanisms in areas of the brain related to internal regulation of hormone secretion, as well as other areas that can influence our mood, behaviour, aggressiveness, intellectual activity and mental health.

La primera vez fue cuando dimitió de su cargo de director de arte: No te molestará que reduzcamos un poco tu despacho, le explicó Morton, de ahora en adelante apenas si lo vas a necesitar. Claro que no, a mí esas tonterías no me importan, respondió entonces él con orgullosa sinceridad. Así es que llegaron los hombretones y corrieron las paredes. Le quitaron uno de los armarios, parte de la ventana y un puñado de metros de moqueta, de modo que ya no tenía lugar para el sofá. Además clausuraron la puerta que daba al antedespacho de la secretaria, abriendo otra entrada, en cambio, que comunicaba este antedespacho con la pecera de Miguel. Que era vecino de panel y quien más se estaba favoreciendo de los corrimientos de mamparas. A Miguel, recién ascendido, fueron a parar su armario, su media ventana y su suelo robado. El ingreso en prisión de varios guardias civiles por narcotráfico debería ser motivo para todos de reflexión. Por de pronto, una institución apoyada por la España democrática como instrumento útil en los menesteres más comprometidos, como el terrorismo y la lucha contra el narcotráfico, se está pudriendo por dentro como una ciruela. Yo pronostico que esta situación empeorará. La podredumbre continuará en la misma Guardia Civil y se extenderá a otros cuerpos policiales, al propio ministerio del Interior, al de Justicia, a los funcionarios de prisiones, a los jueces, a las altas capas sociales y a los políticos.
Y no debemos cargar las culpas, aunque así sea, al poder corruptor de los narcotraficantes, a la catadura moral de éstos, a la escasa persecución policial o al refranero, según el cual la manzana podrida pudre a la sana.
La causa, muy al contrario, se encuentra en la política de persecución penal, cada vez más endurecida e irracional en este punto. Llama la observación del lector que, cuando los socialistas arribaron al poder, expresamente se manifestaran condescendientes con el consumo de drogas porque les parecía ejercicio de la libertad individual, que con tanta ansia se estrenaba tras la dictadura, y práctica de la propia responsabilidad. Cuando captaron que el asunto les quedaba grande y no era manejable, acompañado todo ello con las críticas de organismos internacionales y terceros países, se asustaron, convirtiéndose en paladines de la lucha contra el narcotráfico. Este cambio, como el de todo converso, se hizo tan radical que determinó un clima de apriorismo condenando todo lo relacionado con las llamadas drogas orientales.
Las consecuencias encadenadas que trae esta situación son absolutamente irracionales.
1. Se anatematizan las drogas de origen externo a nuestra cultura (cocaína de América, opio de Oriente) y se fomenta el consumo de las propias (alcohol).
2. Se declaran ilegales y fuera de comercio las primeras, cuando son imprescindibles (léase bien, imprescindibles) en la medicina para luchar contra el dolor.
3. La ilegalidad y la persecución dan lugar a la carestía, y ésta a la marginación social del consumidor que no puede obtener el dinero por sus propios medios y tiene que recurrir a los ajenos, a voluntad o por la fuerza.
4. La consiguiente delincuencia obliga a gastos ingentes para mantener en prisión a la numerosa población reclusa y crear organismos y personal policial y judicial apropiados, quienes usan en ocasiones sus competencias con la sola finalidad de hacerse conocidos.
5. El poder corruptor del dinero del narcotráfico alcanza a los funcionarios y a la Guardia Civil ... y vuelta a empezar.
En la medida en que no se ha conseguido el mínimo objetivo de impedir, al menos, el crecimiento del consumo y tráfico de drogas foráneas, se han alzado voces de llamada a la razón para acabar con esta diabólica trampa. Al parecer, existe un colectivo vasco que propugna la liberación de las drogas sobre la base de que pueden ser controladas mejor desde la legalidad (como ocurre con el alcohol) evitando así las muertes por sobredosis y adulteración y las epidemias de sida y hepatitis. La legalización, además, facilitaría el acceso a la droga de los enfermos, que, al calvario de su propia enfermedad, han de añadir las dificultades para el alivio del dolor derivadas de los obstáculos administrativos para su suministro y del miedo de algunos facultativos a recetarla. La legalización, por último, rebajaría el precio en un 32.000% (ha leído bien, señor lector) por la abundancia de producto natural y la facilidad de su elaboración.
Esta opinión está muy extendida entre los juristas españoles catedráticos, magistrados, jueces y fiscales que se manifestaron a través del Manifiesto de Málaga, en 1989, “rotundamente en contra de cualquier intento de penalización del consumo”.

The conviction and imprisonment of several police officers from the Spanish Guardia Civil for drug trafficking should be a moment of reflection for everyone. It seems that a public body entrusted by democratic Spain with the most sensitive tasks, like fighting terrorism and the drug trade, is rotting from the inside like a plum. I predict that this situation will only get worse. The decay will continue in the Guardia Civil itself, and extend to the other police forces, the ministry of justice, prison officers and judges, politicians and the highest levels of society. And we cannot lay all the blame, much as they may deserve it, on the corrupting powers of the drug traffickers, on judgments about their morals, on insufficient prosecution, or on the idea that one rotten apple can destroy a whole barrel.
In fact, the real cause is something very different: the laws governing prosecution for drug offences, which get harsher and more irrational all the time. It will not have escaped the reader’s notice that during the first years of democracy in Spain, after the death of Franco, the socialist government made a point of being lenient about drug use because they believed it was an expression of individual freedom, so anxiously lauded after the dictatorship, and a matter of personal responsibility. When they realised that the matter was getting out of hand, accompanied by criticism from international bodies and other countries, they got scared and became crusaders against drug trafficking. This change, just as radical as the previous one, led to a climate of a priori condemnation of everything related to so-called oriental drugs.
The resulting chain of consequences clearly demonstrates that this situation is irrational:
1. Drugs with origins outside Spanish culture (cocaine from America, opium from the Far East) are condemned, while the consumption of our own (alcohol) is encouraged.
2. The former are declared illegal and off the market, when they are essential (yes, actually essential) in medicine to fight pain.
3. Illegality and persecution lead to scarcity and high prices, and consequently to the social exclusion of the consumer who lacks the means to obtain money to buy them and has to resort to either begging or stealing.
4. The resulting criminal behaviour forces the state to spend money on maintaining a large prison population and on creating police and judicial bodies which regularly use their position only for self-publicity.
5. The corrupting power of money reaches the officers of the Guardia Civil... and the cycle begins again.
While we fail to meet even the minimum objective of at least halting the growth of consumption and trafficking of imported drugs, voices of reason are calling for an end to this terrible trap. One Basque group proposes that drugs should be legalised on the basis that if they were legal they could be regulated more easily (just like alcohol), and deaths from overdose, adulteration and illnesses such as AIDS and hepatitis could be avoided. Legalisation would also lead to easier access to therapeutic drugs for those suffering from various medical conditions who currently, on top of what they are already suffering, have to add the stress of being unable to obtain effective pain relief because of the administrative obstacles and medical professionals’ fear of prescribing certain substances. Finally, legalisation would reduce drug prices by 32,000% (yes, dear reader, you read that correctly) thanks to the abundance of natural product and ease of production.
This opinion is widely shared among Spanish legal professionals – academics, magistrates, judges and prosecutors – who declared themselves in the Malaga Manifesto of 1989 to be “absolutely opposed to any attempt to penalise posession.”

1. El extranjero que pretenda entrar en España deberá hacerlo por los puestos habilitados al efecto, hallarse provisto del pasaporte o documento de viaje que acredite su identidad, que se considere válido para tal fin en virtud de convenios internacionales suscritos por España y no estar sujeto a prohibiciones expresas. Asimismo, deberá presentar los documentos que se determinen reglamentariamente que justifiquen el objeto y condiciones de estancia, y acreditar medios de vida suficientes para el tiempo que pretenda permanecer en España, o estar en condiciones de obtener legalmente dichos medios.
Artículo 26. Prohibición de entrada en España:
1. No podrán entrar en España, ni obtener un visado a tal fin, los extranjeros que hayan sido expulsados, mientras dure la prohibición de entrada, así como aquellos que la tengan prohibida por otra causa legalmente establecida o en virtud de convenios internacionales en los que sea parte España.
2. A los extranjeros que no cumplan los requisitos establecidos para la entrada, les será denegada mediante resolución motivada, con información acerca de los recursos que puedan interponer contra ella, plazo para hacerlo y autoridad ante quien deben formalizarlo, y de su derecho a la asistencia letrada, que podrá ser de oficio, y de intérprete, que comenzará en el momento mismo de efectuarse el control en el puesto fronterizo.
Artículo 27. Expedición del visado.
1. El visado se solicitará y expedirá en las Misiones Diplomáticas y Oficinas Consulares de España, y habilitará al extranjero para presentarse en un puesto fronterizo español y solicitar su entrada. Excepcionalmente, los visados de estancia podrán ser solicitados y expedidos en el puesto habilitado para la entrada.
2. Reglamentariamente se establecerá la normativa específica del procedimiento de concesión y expedición de visados, conforme a lo previsto en la disposición adicional undécima de la Ley 30/1992, de 26 de noviembre. En dicho procedimiento podrá requerirse la comparecencia personal del solicitante.
3. El ejercicio de la potestad de otorgamiento o denegación de visados se sujetará a los compromisos internacionales vigentes en la materia y se orientará al cumplimiento de los fines de la política exterior del Reino de España y de otras políticas públicas españolas o de la Unión Europea, como la política de inmigración, la política económica y la de seguridad ciudadana.

1. Foreign nationals seeking leave to enter Spanish territory must do so via a designated point of entry and be in possession of a passport or other travel document which provides proof of their identity and is considered valid according to international agreements ratified by Spain. They must not be subject to an exclusion order, and must be able to present documents which show the reason for their visit and length of stay. They must also provide evidence that they possess adequate funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay, or that they are in a position to be able to obtain such funds legally.
Section 26. Refusal of entry into Spain
1. Anyone who has previously been deported from Spain may not enter nor obtain an entry visa for as long as their prohibition from entry remains in force. This also applies to anyone who has been refused entry for other legally established reasons or in accordance with any international agreement to which Spain is a signatory.
2. Foreign nationals who do not fulfill the established entry requirements will be refused entry and informed in writing of the grounds for their refusal. They will be provided with information regarding how they may appeal against the decision, the timescale for doing so and the authority to which they must appeal. They will also be informed of their right to legal representation, which may be court-appointed, and to an interpreter. These rights will come into effect from the time they are refused entry at the Spanish border.
Section 27. Issue of visas
1. Visa applications must be made to Spanish Diplomatic Missions or Consular Offices, and these bodies will be responsible for the issue of visas. Possession of a valid visa will give foreign nationals the right to present themselves at the Spanish border and request entry to Spain. In exceptional circumstances, short-stay visas may be requested and issued at border control points.
2. The exact procedure governing application for and issue of visas will be set out in accordance with the 11th additional provision of Act 30 of 26th November 1992. As stated in this procedure, the applicant may be required to attend in person.
3. The exercise of discretionary powers in the granting and refusal of visas will be subject to existing international agreements governing this area, and will be based on achieving the foreign policy aims of the kingdom of Spain and the aims of other Spanish and EU public policy, such as immigration policy, economic policy and the security of Spanish citizens.

I'm a freelance translator from Spanish into English. I'm interested in translating all types of text; for me, one of the most interesting aspects of being a translator is researching new topics and learning about things I might never have learned about if I hadn't had to translate a text about them. I particularly enjoy translating texts related to science, social science and current affairs, but during my studies for the CIoL exam I also gained a lot of experience in translating documents from fields such as business and law.
