L'an dernier, Justine Lévy passait aux aveux avec Rien de grave. Jean-Marc Roberts, qui a édité la fille de Bernard-Henri Lévy, s'en souvient encore : «Lorsque Justine est arrivée avec son manuscrit, confie- t-il, je me suis dit : «Quelle est cette nouvelle épreuve que le ciel nous envoie !» Une épreuve ? Un triomphe : 150 000 exemplaires arra chés ! Le gourou de l'intime reçoit dans son bureau, chez Stock. Quadragénaire qui chausse des baskets d'adolescent, Roberts a toujours l'air de sortir d'une nuit blanche ou d'une balade à patins à roulettes. Espiègle et doué, il flaire l'air du temps. La notoriedad vende. En el 2004, Benjamín Castaldi y su madre, Catherine Allégret, saldaban sus cuentas con Yves Montand de manera escandalosa por medio de best-sellers. Así pues, vemos que un nuevo género está emergiendo: la autobiografía epistolar. Los artistas de poca monta que cautivan al “pópulo” ya no se envían cartas porque está pasado de moda; en cambio prefieren bombardearse con libros quejumbrosos. Cynthia Jardou, hija de Michel, se une al grupo con Appelez-moi Li Lou (Editions du Rocher).
Alain Finkielkraut observa este fenómeno sin complacencia alguna: “Hemos entrado en una sociedad en la que hay una indiscreción generalizada. Hay una barriada en Cartagena (Murcia) que se llama Lo Campano. Es uno de esos lugares que nadie quiere pisar pero cuyo nombre todos conocen, un nombre que asusta y estremece, sinónimo de la ciudad oscura y la vida infeliz. Unas 1.500 personas habitan en la zona, la mayoría en bloques de cuatro plantas que ya debían de ser pobrísimos cuando se construyeron, hace décadas, y que ahora muestran aquí y allá las feroces mordeduras de la ruina, con cristales rotos, colchones exangües saliendo por las ventanas, bolsas de basura tapando los vanos, puertas tapiadas. Es la miseria vertical, que resulta más desoladora que la miseria horizontal de las chabolas. Coches calcinados enseñan sus tripas de mugre achicharrada, y el agua corre por las calles porque hay cañerías generales que se han roto hace tiempo sin que las vengan a arreglar. Muchas viviendas bajas han sido demolidas y muestran el forjado y los cables al aire, porque cada dos por tres viene la policía y derriba una casa (un supermercado de la droga) sin importarles la mutilación urbana que provocan, los solares llenos de basuras, el aumento de la degradación. El abandono social y el sufrimiento que la droga conlleva han herido a este barrio en el corazón.
Pero entre tanta oscuridad hay mucha luz. El año pasado, una profesora de adultos llamada Ana tuvo la idea de crear allí una biblioteca, la Botica del Libro, o sea, la farmacia, porque Ana sabe bien que los libros curan; y junto con la presidenta de la asociación de vecinos del barrio, otra Ana tan maravillosa y guerrera como ella, y con la ayuda de la Concejalía de la Juventud y de decenas de voluntarios, han montado un asombroso islote de esperanza. Los vecinos han pintado el local de colores alegres, han construido estanterías con materiales de desecho, han conseguido miles de libros para prestar. Además tienen trece ordenadores para que los jóvenes estudien y una sala para niños con preciosos cuentos. Hay otra Botica en un barrio cercano de inmigrantes, pero ésta en Lo Campano es un milagro. Es la prueba de la heroica tenacidad del ser humano, de que el empeño y el ensueño de ser mejores nos hacen capaces de los logros más lentos y difíciles. Para llegar a pie hasta la China remota basta con echar a andar y no pararse.

There is a slum in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain) named Lo Campano. It is one of those places that everybody has heard of, but in which no one wants to set foot. Its name frightens people and makes them shudder with fear; it is synonymous with a dark city and an unhappy life. The area has around 1500 inhabitants and most of the people live in four-floor-blocks, which were probably already very poor when they were built decades ago, and which now show, here and there, the fierce damages/havocs caused by poverty. All around, you can see broken windows with destroyed mattresses protruding from them, rubbish bags covering holes and bricked up doors. It is vertical misery, which feels even bleaker than the horizontal misery of shacks. Burned-out cars show their scorched loins full of dirt, and water runs through the streets because some main pipes haven’t been repaired for a long time. Many poor houses have been demolished, leaving their wrought iron and cables visible, because every now and then the police knock down a house (a drug supermarket) without caring about the urban mutilation they cause. Building sites are left full of rubbish, social degradation increases and the area is strongly harmed by the suffering caused by drugs.
Nevertheless, in the middle of all this darkness there is plenty of light. Last year, Ana, a teacher for adults, had the idea of setting up a library: the Book Chemist, that is, a pharmacy. Ana knows that books heal, so together with the president of the neighbourhood’s association –another Ana, who is as wonderful and has an equal fighting spirit as the preceding-, with some help from the Youth Councillor and dozens of voluntary workers they have opened an amazing isle of hope. Neighbours have painted the premises in bright colours, built shelves out of waste material and they have managed to raise thousands of books that can now be loaned. On top of all this, they have gotten computers for youngsters to study and a room for children which is full of lovely books. There is another Chemist in a nearby immigrant slum, but this one in Lo Campano is a miracle. It is an example of human heroism, a proof that determination and the hope of becoming better make us capable of the slowest and hardest achievements. In order to get to China by foot you only have to start walking and never stop.
