Die Buchführung erfasst lückenlos alle baren und unbaren Geschäftsvorfälle eines Geschäftsjahres. Ihr Ziel ist es, zum Ende eines Geschäftsjahres den Stand des Vermögens und der Schulden festzustellen und somit den Erfolg der Unternehmung zu ermitteln. Der Gesetzgeber hat eine Reihe von Vorschriften über Art und Umfang der Buchführung erlassen. Diese richten sich je nach der Rechtsform und der Größe eines Unternehmens. Wenn eine Eintragungspflicht im Handelsregister besteht, muss ein Unternehmen laut Handelsgesetzbuch (HGB) grundsätzlich alle Geschäftsvorfälle in Form einer doppelten Buchführung aufzeichnen und über das Geschäftsvermögen einen Jahresabschluss (Bilanz sowie Gewinn- und Verlustrechnung) erstellen.
Systeme der Buchführung Für kaufmännische Buchführung gibt es zwei Buchführungssysteme, die einfache und die doppelte Buchführung. Von beiden Systemen hat sich die doppelte Buchführung auch in Kleinbetrieben so durchgesetzt, dass die einfache Buchführung praktisch keine Bedeutung mehr hat. Der Vorteil der doppelten Buchführung liegt darin, dass alle chronologisch anfallenden Geschäftsvorfälle sachlich nach ihrer Vermögens- und ihrer Erfolgswirkung erfasst werden können. Demgegenüber werden bei der einfachen Buchführung die Geschäftsvorfälle nur in zeitlicher Reihenfolge aufgezeichnet.
Die doppelte Buchführung
Die doppelte Buchführung basiert auf dem Grundgedanken, von der Vielzahl der Geschäftsvorfälle in einem Jahr diejenigen zusammenzufassen, die für die Zukunft von Bedeutung sind und diejenigen, die nur noch einen Vergangenheitsbezug haben. Für die Zukunft von Bedeutung sind am Ende eines Geschäftsjahres alle Arten von Beständen, positive und negative. Als positive Bestände gelten alle Vermögensbestände (Anlagen, Warenlager, Forderungen an Kunden und das Geld in der Kasse). Negative Bestände sind Schulden wie Verbindlichkeiten gegenüber Kreditinstituten und Lieferanten, also das fremde Kapital. Aber auch die eigenen Geldmittel sind Schulden, nämlich Schulden des Unternehmers an den Eigner.
Die Bilanz
Geschäftsvorfälle mit Zukunftsbezug werden auf Bestandskonten erfasst und diese am Ende eines Geschäftsjahres auf dem Bilanzkonto zusammengefasst. Die Bilanz ist eine Gegenüberstellung von Vermögen (Aktiva) und Schulden (Passiva).

La contabilidad recoge de manera ininterrumpida todos los movimientos económicos de la empresa, acompañados o no de movimientos monetarios, en un ejercicio determinado. La meta es comprobar al final de un año económico el estado del patrimonio y con ello calcular el resultado de la empresa. El legislador ha promulgado una serie de ordenanzas sobre la clase y extensión de la contabilidad. Éstas se sujetan a la configuración jurídica y al volumen empresarial. Según el Código de Comercio (CdC), la empresa que esté obligada a inscribirse en el registro mercantil debe, en principio, anotar todas sus operaciones en forma de contabilidad por partida doble y efectuar un cierre de cuentas anual (balance y cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias) sobre el patrimonio empresarial).
El sistema de la contabilidad Existen dos sistemas de contabilidad para la contabilidad comercial, la simple y la doble contabilidad. A ambos sistemas se ha impuesto la doble contabilidad incluso en la pequeña empresa, por lo que la contabilidad simple prácticamente ha dejado de tener importancia. La ventaja de la doble contabilidad predomina en que toda transacción cronológicamente presentada pertinente podrán presentarse según su efecto patrimonial y su resultado. En cambio, con la contabilidad por partida simple los movimientos económicos se anotan sólo cronológicamente.
La doble contabilidad
La contabilidad por partida doble se basa en la idea fundamental de reunir, de los múltiples movimientos económicos de un ejercicio, los que tienen importancia para el futuro y los que solo se refieren al pasado. Son importantes para el futuro al final del ejercicio toda clase de existencias, positivas y negativas. Como existencias positivas se considera todo el activo (inversión, depósito de mercancías, clientes deudores y el dinero en caja). Existencias negativas son las deudas o deber como las obligaciones de los acreedores frente al instituto creditario y los proveedores, por la tanto el capital externo. Pero también los recursos propios son deudas, esto es, deudas del empresario con los propietarios.
El Balance
Los movimientos económicos referidos al futuro se incluyen en las cuentas de existencias, las cuales se reúnen al final del ejercicio en la cuenta del balance). El balance es una confrontación del patrimonio (activos) y deudas (pasivo).
