Hi, colleagues.
I have to translate a 300-page medical booklet.
At the end, I find 4 pages of an Index. Here is an extract, you have probably seen tons of these:
distress, 91, 187, 188, 206, 282
drill-down questions, 33, 34, 252, 254
drug-resistance testing, 254
Drugs, 12, 67, 79, 86, 88, 90, 91, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 120, 127, 128, 137, 181, 203, 205, 208, 236, 237, 255, 257, 273, 279
dual infection, 83, 85, 255

It's a term and the numbers of pages the term appears on.
My question is: Is there some way of generating this automatically once I finished translated the booklet? Or do I have to check page by page and manually write down each page number a translated term appears on?
Is there a software that can do this for me?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,

Hi, the applications used for creating publications offer a way to automatically create Indexes and TOC (Tables of Contents). I don't know which application the source files you are about to translate were created in, but if it is MS Word and if the person who created the booklet knew how to use Word correctly, then there is a big chance the file already has an automatic Index, so all you have to do is translate the index keys and run an "update" command on the file.

Hi, Veronica. Thanks for your advice. I checked the file and found the index was made with the Word index function, so it will be a piece of cake. Today I love Word Some other days I want to uninstall it (a.k.a. kill it.)

the page numbers where the (translated) terms appear should remain more or less the same, so you could translate the terms in the index and then re-sort them in alphabetical order. Then you should do a final check (with 'find') to make sure that the page numbers are still correct. This may take some time and you could consider charging a separate fee for this. | |

That was definitely my "plan B", which I wanted to avoid completely because the translation is on a flat rate I can't negotiate
But apparently, I'll be able to do it automatically, yay!
Thanks and regards,
