It was a nice meeting, especially with two PMs/translators of Localization business. All the others profit from their experiences.
There were mind exchanges about how to enhance the competence of a translator through interaction with other translators, how to avoid colleague jealousy which hinders the total performance of a localization team and some other hows, especially the way to maintain good rates for reasonable works.
I am very happy that there is even one who comes from Shanghai to participate this meeting and bring in some lights about the situation of translation business in Mainland China.
I am especially happy that we will have our regular meeting in Taipei plus some fun with Latin music and dance in the future.
People with knowledge of not only English participated in this meeting and brought in skills of cross cultural communication. We shall keep on the positive attitude toward our business and find collaborations whenever there is an opportunity.
However, each one of us has to fight for a stand in the field. We did come to the conclusion that each of us has his/her own strengths and weaknesses and that is the reason why we need each other. Fighting for a stand in the field is not very easy, but there are some ones who are already established and they can help whenever there is an opportunity. So long we can check on our negative emotions, we will be able to improve our stands. Let petty minds stay in their narrow field, we go for something high and big.
Bigger projects are not difficult to handle at all. Process control, budget control, team building and restructuring, right tool choosing and other issues --- all these were dealt for a better understanding of how it works in our business. That is, a freelance shall never be alone. S/he shall join some associations to broaden his/her horizon, so that s/he can input positive influence in dealing with bigger projects.
No necessity to win in a translation contest, no necessity to be always right in matter of translation, no necessity to be master of English. A sound understanding of life and activities in life will be enough for us to crack the hardest job we ever get in to fulfil. We have enough examples shown in the meeting, though everything was presented as a chat, a dialogue between peers. For me, it is enough to know my peers and collaborators personally.
A great meeting it was. Thanks for coming and I wish to see you soon at Tango's where you never make a mistake.
As I stressed, everyone of you is the most important. Keep on building up your competence and there will be collaborations with many people by opportunities.
However, it is the competences, the attitudes toward life and the opportunities that put people together and that make people collaborating. Be patient and learn from each other or make use of each other's strength to achieve common interests. Freelancers are not alone, indeed.
