Business/Commerce (general) / Funeral Services
Spanish term or phrase: túmulo
A cheery one for a Monday! Couldn't find the category 'funeral services' so I just put it under 'business' :)

I was thinking that this might be a 'viewing case/cabinet'. I think it's a large glass case where the coffin is placed. British English.

This is not my text but it gives some examples of usage:

Notes to answerer

Asker: O quieres decir 'mount'?

Asker: Um, no sé si 'mount' funciona tampoco :-)

raised platform

Explanation:
I think what we're talking about here is in fact an "exhibiting cold room". If you look at the photos ("Salas de Velatoria") on the website for which the URL is given below, what is shown looks like a two-room setup: one room for those viewing the remains; and the remains in a separate room, presumably refrigerated to preserve the remains, & behind glass windows ("acristalado"), with curtains even. The first meaning for "túmulo" given in the DRAE is: 1. m. Sepulcro levantado de la tierra. So the basic meaning is an elevated tomb or sepulchre; in this case, an elevated platform for the temporary display of the remains, so that family & friends can view them (from behind the glass). It seems a little weird to me - somehow, supersanitized & remote; I've gone to open-casket funerals in the US, & the casket was there on a stand; you walk up to it, you look down on the remains, say a prayer or whatever, then walk away.

Example sentence(s):

Hi Lisa,
I put this reference up as I had to go out and did not have time to search for English possibilities. It's probably too late now but I would go with glass casket - I did find out that a casket is rectangular, as opposed to a coffin, which is 'coffin-shaped'! J

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thanks, Jane! That's what I was thinking it might be. Any ideas what we call this in English?

Asker: The English 'translation' for 'túmulo' is 'exhibiting cold room' which I feel is unlikely. Other things like 'bones dryer' and 'exhibitor of coffins' don't inspire confidence:-))
