Me explico. El cursado de toda asignatura universitaria (al menos cuando yo era estudiante universitario en Argentina) tiene ciertos requisitos: concurrencia a un número mínimo de clases y trabajos prácticos, aprobación de exámenes parciales, entrega de monografías, etc. Una vez completados estos requisitos, el alumno puede dar un examen final como alumno "regular." De lo contrario, puede (o no) tener la opción de dar el examen final comop alumno "libre." Dicho examen libre normalmente es mucho más extenso y difícil.

Se puede así decir: "Necesito aprobar el examen parcial recuperatorio para regularizar Matemáticas IIc (o para completar el curso como alumno regular)." O, en inglés, "I need to pass the make-up mid-term exam to complete all class requirements."
