“Win big” significa ganar mucho dinero cuando hay una apuesta por medio, como por ejemplo en el póquer. En este contexto es una expresión muy frecuente. No es imposible que ocurra en el surf —en principio, se podría ganar dinero realizando proezas—, pero en cualquier caso ocurriría más bien después de hacerse profesional.

En otro contextos deportivos, “win big” quiere decir ganar de manera espectacular o por un margen muy amplio en alguna competición o campeonato, de acuerdo con la acepción 2 (a) de “big” como adverbio en el diccionario de Merriam-Webster:

En español, me parece que “ganar a lo grande” es la expresión adecuada:

En cuanto a “go professional” (es más frecuente “turn professional”, por lo menos en inglés británico), creo que “hacerse profesional” valdría perfectamente; la propuesta de Bea, “pasarse a profesional”, es otra buena opción.

Y por último, me atrae mucho también la propuesta de Bea para la frase: “a base de...”; pero no he querido plagiarla.
