THIS TEXT DEALS WITH LAB TESTS. THEY TALK ABOUT "SOIL SAMPLES", "SOIL RESIDUE", "THE SOIL SHOULD SETTLE OUT", WHEN TESTING SEVERAL SAMPLES, ADD THE SOIL AND THE SOLUTION," etc.

"Unlike mineral nutrients in soil such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, organic matter is a nondistinct component of soil. It is measured by an approximate relationship with organc carbon.

WHAT IS THE BEST TRANSLATION FOR "SOIL" HERE? SHOULD I SAY "TIERRA," "TIERRA NEGRA," OR "SUELO"? SOMEHOW, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE LATTER IS THE LEAST APPROPRIATE TERM.

I think both "tierra" and "suelo" are acceptable [at least in Mexico].

Thank you very much, Terry. I forgot to state that my translation is for Mexico. As I am Chilean and we have several idiomatic differences with that country, I wanted to make sure I could use "tierra" once the samples were being handled in the lab.

Explanation:
I vote for suelo, which is the most appropriate term in my opinion. I have just done a series of texts about nutrients from Spanish into English, and suelo was the only term used, never tierra, and definitely not tierra negra.

Terreno / suelo


Explanation:
For soil sampling, I found "muestreo del terreno", but for soil type, the translation would be "tipo de suelo", and for soil sample, "muestra del suelo". I could also find other references to "tierras" (in plural), like for soil analysis "análisis de tierras".

María Eugenia, creo que tendrías que utilizar ambos términos.
Yo diría \"Los ...minerales del **suelo**, pero en él ámbito del laboratorio, **la tierra se sedimenta**.
