I translated virtually 100% of this project, which spanned almost 6 years, from system design, bidding process, proposals, contracts, planning, execution, gantry erection and fitting out, hardware specifications, installation and operation manuals, traffic management, system enforcement, concession contracts, consumer regulations, billing process, etc., up to delivery of complete system documentation to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
During the execution phase, I also translated numerous legal and technical documents into English.
I did all this as a freelancer for various parties, starting with the project designer, then the system supply and implementation contractors, and finally the concession holders.

| | inglés al español: LOCALIZATION (AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH TO CHILEAN SPANISH) | Texto de origen - inglés Discipline and Your Young Child
A positive approach to discipline offers an alternative to nagging, yelling, and punishing. It’s a matter of setting clear limits and expectations, and following through consistently.
- What is “positive discipline”?
- Your child as an individual
- Setting clear limits and realistic expectations
- Setting limits with preschoolers
Your toddler just had his second tantrum (this week!) in the grocery store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed in the morning. Your 5 year old has been hitting other kids on the playground. Every child is different, of course, but chances are that more than once you’ve found yourself wondering how on earth you can teach your child to behave. Here are some ideas and tips that may help.
What is “positive discipline”?
Positive discipline means teaching -- helping a child learn self-control. It doesn’t mean punishment. As a parent, you have to set almost all the limits and rules for your young child right now. But by setting clear limits and disciplining in a positive, loving way, you can help your child begin to learn how to control their own behavior and how to set their own limits. Punishment may let them know they've made a mistake, but it won’t help them learn how to change the way they behave.
Your child as an individual
Every child has their own style of exploring and reacting to the world, from babyhood on. Although you have the same basic expectations from each of your children, it can be helpful to adapt the way you discipline each child according to their personality. This does not mean having different rules for each child. One child may be highly active, or move quickly from one activity to another. They may need more frequent reminding of the limits or more help in doing what is expected. Another child may need more time to move into a new situation or get used to change -- whether it is meeting new people, going to a new place or trying a new activity. They may need more explanation and/or more advance notice of a new limit or expectation to be ready to adapt to it.
Setting clear limits and realistic expectations
Young children aren’t little adults. It’s perfectly normal for them to want things right away and to think only about themselves. It’s still hard for them to control their impulses. They’re constantly exploring and testing limits. It can be difficult sometimes to know what is reasonable to expect from a child at different ages and in different situations.
It can be hard to set limits with children. We want our children to love us. But our job as parents isn’t to be our children’s favorite person all the time. If your child says, “I hate you!” sometimes, it’s probably a sign that you’re doing your job as a parent. Making your expectations clear, setting limits, and being consistent are all key to being an effective parent.

| español al inglés: DISCRIMINACION EN EL LUGAR DE TRABAJO - DISCRIMINATION AT THE WORKSITE Detailed field: General / Conversación / Saludos / Cartas | Texto de origen - español Noviembre 13, 2007
Estimado Sr. A,
| Traducción - inglés NOTE: THIS FREE TRANSLATION WAS HIGHLY APPRECIATED BY MY CLIENT, AS I CONTRIBUTED TO MAKE HIS PRESENTATION CLEARER.
November 13, 2007
Dear Mr. A,
I write to you to express my severe displeasure at not only having been dismissed from my job as Assistant Accountant in XXXXXXX, but also the way in which I was treated during my brief tenure at said job.
This feeling stems from various situations:
1. First of all, in the interview with Ms. DW and Ms. CM, before I was hired, I clearly stated that I was not familiar with the eeee system, as all my previous jobs had involved the use of other software. I also emphasized that I had very limited knowledge of the payroll process, since all my previous employers had outsourced this function. To both these statements, Ms. W and Ms. M answered that this was not an issue, as I would be provided with appropriate training (courses and seminars).
2. The only seminar that was made available to me was of little use, as it dealt with the sale of other products, a fact that I explained to Ms. W at the time.
3. The only on-the-job training I was given, if it can be called that, occurred during the preparation of the payroll process, under all the rush and pressure said activity entails: late submission of documents from all departments, including Human Resources; corrections to previous month’s payments, and numerous other last-minute tasks.
4. Around my second month with XXXXXXX –shortly after your arrival–, I spoke with Ms. W about my disappointment at the lack of support I had been getting from her, as well as her and Ms. Z’s attitudes in response to any work-related question I asked. Ms. W told me she was a “macro manager” and she expected me to already have full command of all my duties and no questions to ask. I am sure you can understand that after that conversation, every time I needed to ask a question, not only did I feel like an idiot but also very uncomfortable anticipating the looks they would give me.
5. On November 2, I started the latest payroll, and this time Ms. Z behaved disgracefully towards me –I can now only think they were preparing my dismissal. First, she refused to give me Ms. W's telephone number, and then kept me waiting from 2:00 PM to 4:15 PM for her answer to a single question. She repeatedly told me “just a second, just a second.” Eventually she turned off her computer, picked up her handbag, and walked to my desk to say: “No, sorry, I do not remember how to do that. You have to wait until Monday.” If Ms. Z, who had processed the payroll for more than twelve months, “could not remember,” I wonder why I, having done it intermittently for less than three months, was expected to know everything.
I feel I was severely discriminated against in this workplace. As of late, I was the lackey Ms. DW used to assign other employee’s undesired work, cover for absentees, or prepare past years’ inventory boxes –the ones you so kindly helped me move–, neither caring about my age nor ever using the words “please” or “thank you”.
I apologize for not having talked to you earlier, Mr. A. I come from a culture where we do our best to come up with solutions and avoid causing inconvenience to others. Unfortunately, this time I was given no chance to learn how to do things I timely and clearly noted I was not familiar with.
I never thought I would encounter such discrimination within a government agency. However, I am aware that these kinds of situations are created by the people themselves, and not by the institutions that employ them. My aforementioned sentiments stem from the myriad reprehensible acts of but a few employees. I find it unfortunate that an employment position I enjoyed a great deal was prematurely shortened by what seems a calculated act of discrimination on the part of said employees.
Thank you very much for your kindness, and my best wishes for success in your career.
Yours truly,
MEW/FLW/1810 |

A Bilingual Secretary with a degree from Universidad Catolica de Chile, I practiced my profession from 1973 through 1990, always assisting Chilean and American senior executive officers that required me to translate business correspondence and technical literature into their respective native languages.
Two years with Empresa Nacional del Petroleo (ENAP), five with Dimacofi S.A. -an office equipment importer/distributor, and eight years with The Chase Manhattan Bank, N.A. (Chile Branch), gave me the chance to enhance my working competencies through hands-on experiences in most of my employers' activities.
I am well acquainted with the legal, imports/exports, personnel, technology, strategic planning, sales, financial, accounting, reporting, corporate policy-making, and internal control procedures.
When Chase closed its operation in Chile, I used my contacts and expertise to rapidly build a client base and start my career as a freelance translator.
A faithful client portfolio that soon expanded into such diverse areas as psychoanalysis, education, and systems engineering has earned me a reputation as a reliable translator -and, most importantly, one that derives true joy from earning her living by doing what she likes best:
