I was thinking of just saying ' as well as/in addition to the carrying out of doctoral...etc but it sounds too 'bulky' to me and you can't 'carry out' a publication or patent. Suggestions as to any verb that could encompass all?

You could say "completion" (of doctoral theses, etc...) although it may not be the best option for "patents" either.
