Fairly recently, a good agency I work for passed on their client's comments on my work. He clearly had a smattering of English and probably wrote some of the very poorly written English language notes scattered about in the source text and which I had to extensively correct/rewrite. It is possible that, having claimed within his company that he could write in English, he felt the need to save face; if so, the attempt backfired on him. He challenged my use of some terms, claiming that the dictionary definition of those words was different. He quoted definitions that seemed to come from a pocket, tourist dictionary.

I sent a detailed defence of my translation and refutation of the client's comments, quoting definitions from larger and specialist dictionaries and giving references to support constructions I had used and that the client thought were wrong. The agency backed me and they continue to be one of my best clients. ▲ Collapse
