To give you a taste of what is in store for you when you choose to visit the Arabella opera: it is the story of a rich yet poor little girl in search for a “master” who will make her an obedient child as well as a lover. However, Arabella’s parents have a different plan for her: they intend to sell her to the highest bidder, someone who can give them the money that will save their family’s declining fortune. Arabella’s gambling father, Count Waldner, sends his daughter’s picture to an old army friend. Like any other good opera, the opera Arabella also has a twist to make our little heroine happy in the end. This was perhaps one of the best things Strauss did in the opera.
