It is such a paradox that in the years 2000-2007, the low progress in labour productivity growth in Spain went hand in hand with the substantial increase in business efficiency. This has given results in high profitability in productive assets, and even better results in the capital assets of the businesses, given the low cost of external funding.
This increases in business efficiency arise from high tangible capital assets investment, not only in residential building, but also in public infrastructure and commercial property. It results from a considerable improvement in the level of educational attainment of the workforce, and from the significant spread of new information technology, in particular as part of a deep reorganizational structure within the enterprise, by redefining their business models, significantly increasing the amount of outsourcing, and develops partnership and supplier networks, and financial management innovation.
If this is so, the slow growth in labour productivity should be explained on different terms from those guidelines which have seen companies become increasingly competitive, but need not even be excluded.
