Hallo fellow translators,

I installed the program, retrieved the installation number and sent an email as indicated to [email protected] on the 29th of april and another the 2nd of may, both went unanswered.

I wish to know how long I have to wait to receive my licence key, or whether the procedure has changed since last february, and if so, what I am supposed to do.

I also noticed that once, a short sentence containing my reference i.d. for proz appeared when opening a new empty document in Word. As I am still doing basic trials following the on-line tutorial, I couldn't make any use of it and finally deleted the document. Is that normal, or supposed to disappear when cleaning the document after translation?

On last question: I have the version 5 installed on a Mac with OS 9.2. I noticed that some shortcuts, via the F12 key and others aren't working as they should from the beginner's manual. What do you consider the best place to ask for advice, this forum here or the Mac users forum on proz, or else the Yahoo.groups Wordfast forum?

Thanks in advance for every bit of info,

Cecilia

Wordfast licensing is now automated May 3, 2005

Dear Cecilia and Steven,

You are correct, the process has now changed. Now, Wordfast licenses are requested via submission online rather than through email.

Let me help you both off line.

Best Regards,
Cathy

Thank you Cathy, and another question for patient colleagues... May 3, 2005

Thank you Cathy for your prompt reply and private message.

Now about my second question: which one of the forum about Wordfast (and Mac) that I currently know (this one, the Mac users on proz, the yahoo.groups), a Wf/Mac user would recommend as the best for answering beginners questions?

I had notice, some months ago, of a Wf/Mac yahoo.group about to be formed... unfortunately, I lost all related messages.

My questions are mainly on which shortcuts are to be used if the ones indicated on the tutorial fail? Usually there are two possibilities, a click on the Wf bar or a keyboard shortcut: but the last one are not working all the time, for instance my F12 key is "empty", has no function assignated and I can't figure out which one and how to do it.

Thanks again to everyone willing to help.

Best,

Cecilia

Hi, Cecilia,

I'm not sure which forum or list is better. Usually, the Yahoo group is regarded as dealing with advanced questions. They won't answer questions if the answer is already in the manual. Our forum on ProZ.com is, I believe, a good one for beginners. Everyone is nice and helpful and there are not many unanswered questions.

About your shortcut problems, it seems like you have a problem with your keyboard. For instance I use a Microsoft Natural Keyboard and I have to press the F Lock key to activate the F1, F2, F3 etc.

Maybe we can help if you give us more detailed information about your problem.

Best,
Dan

Mac shortcuts May 9, 2005

Hi Cecilia,
veri wrote:

About your question on the shortcuts to use on a Mac, I've just seen a message by Yves on the yahoo main group trying to help on that.
Here I copy the relevant bits:

Would some kind soul please explain to me how shortcuts are used on a Mac? In the manual I've only found: "Mac users: Ctrl replaces Alt in shortcuts". OK, but which keys do I have to press to select, for example, the next placeable (which would be Ctrl+Alt+right on a Windows system)?

Yves: "Normally, it's *also* Ctrl+Alt+etc. Problem with Macs is that keyboard vary fomr machine to machine. My iBook has a Ctrl and an Alt key, and they work like in a PC, Wordfast-wise.
NexSegment is back to a "regular" Alt+Down (it used to be Ctrl+Down last year, so perhaps the manual still has that outdated mention that Ctrl replaces Alt. Gotta fix that)."

And: Are the Del/Ins/Home/End keys also called like that on a Mac keyboard?

Yves: "Yes they are called this way - the question being, are they present or not.
My iBook has no Delete and no Insert key. I can't locate Home and End. (PC guys, go laugh in another room please). I believe there are combinations to achive these keys, but it's not marked on the keys (as with the Fn+... in light gray), and I never opened the manuals. If anybody knows, I'm listening. iBook 12 inch, 2002 vintage.
External, wide-format keyboards have these keys I believe."

Also, apart from the manual, check the download page at www.wordfast.net for two self training manuals (there's a basic and an advanced version) which can be very helpful when you're starting up.
Once you get the basics, the best place to ask for help is the yahoo group.

Hope it helps.
Grace.

Useful lists and shortcut May 9, 2005

Hi Dan and Grace,

I am still trying to teach myself basic Wordfast skills. Yes, Dan, I also had the impression the the Yahoo group was mainly for advanced user and the new version's testers, and most of the users there also work on PCs.

I quit reading for lack of time the group's messages last year, when Yves announced that he had purchased a Mac to put the program on test personally. Now it seems that he is still experimenting, so maybe something will came up.

Thanks to you, Grace, I can locate now that probably my keybord, also a laptop's, needs some key combination to achieve the "delete" or "shift" command. For instance, I can't clean my glossaries because I don't know which one should work as a "delete" key (I mean, I tried all possible combination, but I can't delete a glossary entry "Ctrl+Delete"...) nor I can skip a segment ("Shift+alt+downArrow).

All the Crtl+alt combinations indicated in the beginner's manual seem to work ok, like the "Ctrl+alt+T" to insert a new glossary entry, while for others I have to go to the Wf bar (to copy a placeable, for instance).

But what is killing me now is that I can't manage to work on a document in excel. I followed all the instructions and even searched this forum for previous posts, but there goes the story.

I opened the excel, placed the cursor on the first cell to be translated, I opened an empty document in Word and translated, then saved the word doc, go to the excel sheet and save the modifications. The best that I achieved was all the translation, markers for table included, in one veeeery long cell.

Last time, for a quite repetitive text, I copied and pasted every cell on a 3000 words document. I had to deliver it so I didn't have the time to fiddle with programs, but I can appreciate, once more, to know if there is a solution... or it should be.

All in all, I think that the program, even used with all these limitations, is a good investment, as any CAT tool in itself. I prefer to work on Macs (habits die hard), and I am experimenting Wf on my laptop before investing in a new iMac.

Thank you again for the kind messages and interest.

Best,

Cecilia
