With its rakish MkV saloon, Jaguar gave more expensive cars a run for their money, including Bentley’s suave MkVI, says Jon Pressnell PHOTOGRAPHY TONY BAKER
Is it pushing a point to call the MkV the forgotten Jaguar? Perhaps not. The car lasted barely more than two years, the shortest period for any series of Jaguar saloon. Only 10,493 were made, against nearly 26,000 of the preceding SS range and more than 47,000 of the MkVII-IXs that replaced it. And when did you last see one?
The MkV was, of course, both a stopgap model and a transitional one. But it does not deserve to be forgotten, because it was, in my opinion, the single most important Jaguar saloon until the XJ6 came along. Before the MkV, the pre-war Jaguars – the 1½-litre, 2½-litre and 3½-litre – were well-priced and capable cars. But with the arrival of the stylish and beautifully appointed MkV, Jaguar entered another arena: for the first time it was legitimate to compare a Lyons product with considerably more expensive vehicles.
Principal amongst these was the MkVI Bentley, and the comparison was made all the easier by the new post-war Crewe model having been judiciously moved down market in response to the changing times. To simplify manufacture and lower costs, it was the first Rolls-Royce product to have a standardised body, made by Pressed Steel. Its new engine was part of a ‘Rationalised Range’ of units with four, six or eight cylinders and a maximum number of shared parts.
Equally important, the Bentley represented an astute response to the social climate prevailing in a grey Britain governed by an ideologically fervent Labour party. Rolls-Royces, with their aristocratic image, were frowned on by socialist politicians, so with the MkVI the firm switched emphasis to the Bentley marque; a Rolls derivative only arrived three years after the Bentley and was intended largely for export. To put the
Jaguar in the same basket as a Rolls-Royce would have seemed pretentiously over-ambitious, but with a less upper-crust Bentley the exercise must have seemed more plausible.
This was not least because the MkV marked a quantum leap forward for Jaguar engineering, in that it had an all-new cruciform chassis with torsion-bar independent front suspension inspired by that of the Traction Avant Citroën. Found in shortened form under the XK sports cars, the robust but relatively light frame –
complete with hydraulic brakes, for the first time on a Jaguar – was intended to underpin the twincam sports saloon of which William Lyons dreamed. But he realised that production of the XK straight-six would only slowly ramp up, and that it would be better to restrict its use initially to a small run of XK120s. Just as much to the point, it soon became apparent that he would have a long wait before Pressed Steel could
provide the new all-enveloping body that he wanted for the ‘100mph saloon’.
The MkV was a logical way forward. The new chassis – which incorporated telescopic front dampers, an anti-roll bar and an early use of balljoints – could be trialled ahead of its use on the forthcoming MkVII. Power could come from the proven Standard-derived 2½-litre and 3½-litre engines used since 1935, and honourably developing 102bhp and 125bhp. A modernised body could be made in-house at Foleshill, pieced together from small pressings and with limited tooling investment; it could also form a stylistic bridge between the ex-SS pre-war Jaguars and the pontoon-winged MkVII, making this less of
a shock when it arrived. All the sums added up.
So it was that the MkV was launched at the 1948 Motor Show, at a price of £1189 for the 2½-litre, and £1263 for the 3½-litre. That wasn’t a huge premium for the bigger engine and, by the time that MkV production ended in June 1951, just 1690 2½-litres had been made, against 8803 3½-litres – including 29 dropheads with the 2664cc ‘six’ and 972 with the 3485cc version.
These figures might seem modest, but they helped Jaguar to register its highest output to date in 1950, of 7206 cars, most of them MkVs. If the Jaguar represented evolution, the Bentley was more of a culture shock. Over six model years, the pre-war ‘Derby’ Bentleys clocked up a run of 2411 cars, a sizeable slice of the combined output of Royces and Bentleys during this period. But the company was making too many
unrelated models, with abysmal profitability and – surprising though it may sound – uneven reliability.
Additionally, the sourcing of all bodywork from outside coachbuilders delighted lovers of the bespoke, but the quality was often poor. A sense of crisis came to pervade the upper reaches of management: the cars, it was felt, did not deserve their exalted reputation. Accordingly, a plan was put in place for shared chassis
and engine design across the range as a way of driving down costs and pushing up quality. This led to the MkV Bentley, intended for an autumn 1939 announcement but cancelled at the advent of war when just 11 had been made. It had a new cruciform chassis and Packard-inspired coilsprung independent front suspension that used the arms of the lever-type dampers to form the upper wishbones. The overhead-valve engine was carried over from its predecessors but was intended to be replaced for 1941 by an inletover-
exhaust straight-six from the new range of power units then being developed.
The MkVI, announced in May 1946, picked up on the MkV’s part-riveted chassis, shared with the R-R Silver Wraith, but added the IoE engine and hydraulic front brakes, and clothed the result in that Pressed Steel body. The shell represented a sizeable investment – one that would only be amortised after 5000 cars – but meant that the cost of each body would be half that of a coachbuilt Park Ward saloon. Rolls-Royce was now
locked into a higher production rate than it had been accustomed to, but with a potentially more profitable car that could hopefully be made to better quality, all while keeping its price premium. At £4038 in 1950, the Bentley still cost more than three times the 3½-litre Jaguar, pretty much as had been the case before the war. Beginning life with a 4257cc engine delivering 132bhp on twin SU carbs, the MkVI received a
bored-out 4566cc unit in 1951. With a freerflowing dual exhaust – the previous single-pipe system had absorbed a massive 28bhp – output rose to 153bhp and torque improved significantly.
In September 1952 the MkVI was given a bigger boot with a lift-up lid, and was redesignated the R-type. In this format it continued until April ’55, with a fully welded chassis from late ’53, to eliminate weaknesses encountered with the part-riveted frame. The Bentley was a more select machine than the Jaguar, with just
7521 MkVIs and R-types made (Continentals excluded), plus 761 of the derived (but lowerpowered) R-R Silver Dawn launched in ’49. All the same, these were transformational figures for Rolls-Royce. By 1951, the tooling costs of the body were well on the way to being written off. Contemplate Neville Hamilton’s MkV and you can’t help thinking that the Jaguar has acquired all the aesthetic virtues displayed by the best Derby Bentleys of pre-war years. Notwithstanding its slightly bulbous rear, there is a lithe, racy elegance to the Jaguar, emphasised by its sweeping wingline. It looks longer and lower than the ‘Big Bore’ MkVI of Angus Thornes, the 3½ in lower height disguising that it is 5in shorter than the 16ft Bentley. The chromed
door superstructure further adds to the lighter and more airy feel of the Coventry car, although the beefy double-blade bumpers have the opposite effect. In comparison the MkVI seems more upright, but also more conservative. That’s partly down to its more razor-edged lines, and to the absence of the Jaguar’s running boards.
The MkV’s interior radiates quiet good taste, with unpleated leather upholstery and lustrous wood veneer. Sculpted, height-adjustable bucket seats give good support to those in front, while in the spacious rear there are delightful settee-like curved side armrests and a central one that assumes an odd angle when down. It’s finely executed, but there isn’t a lot of it: the notoriously penny-wise William Lyons clearly had no intention of ratcheting up manufacturing costs by adding needless items of equipment.
In contrast, the Bentley cossets its occupants with a wood-veneer lady’s companion to one side of the rear quarters and a matching smoker’s tidy to the other, plus lift-out footrests and a big cantilever-hinged picnic tray. The front armrests are adjustable, there is a quick-release window mechanism for the driver, a slider-controlled rear-window blind and the usual Crewe circular switch panel with its chrome controls. The seats
are pleated hide, which makes them look less classy than those of the Jaguar, but the woodwork features inlays that evoke coachbuilding practice.
Turning to the driving, in the Jaguar you sit close to a big, black, four-spoke wheel and have a stubby gearlever on the transmission tunnel – it’s stiff in action and with a long throw for first and second, and a tighter gate for third to fourth.
Mated to a smooth, long-travel clutch that takes up quite late, it’s a shift that demands a firm hand, but is a crisp pleasure to manipulate. These Moss gearboxes are supposed to be difficult, but I never clashed a gear, confirming my impression that this reputation is unmerited. The Weslake-head ex-Standard engine is
impressively smooth, offering ample seamless power and turning over at a lazy 3500rpm when approaching 70mph. At 80mph it is still pulling strongly, if more vocally, and is about 10mph inside its genuine maximum, with wind noise the main impediment to its otherwise unflustered progress. As was then customary, the MkV is a touch low-geared, so you can pull away in second and creep along in top, should you wish.
The Burman recirculating-ball steering is relatively slow and matched to a generous turning circle, so you don’t want to leave a turn too late. It is reasonably communicative once on the move, and the car – initially unwieldy – shrinks around you. On twisting roads, the Jaguar corners with poise. Bad surfaces reveal a slight softness to the front end, as well as a bit of structural movement, while the retention of crossplies
means that it tends to follow irregularities. The brakes, meanwhile, have a long pedal action but work adequately. All in all, the MkV comes across as highly competent, but more of an open-road car than one for rural lanes.
In the Bentley you immediately feel at ease, with a higher, more commanding driving position that makes the car feel narrower than is really the case: it’s half an inch wider than the Jaguar. The key to unlocking the pleasures of the Bentley is the right-hand gearlever. Nestling in a cut-out to the seat, it requires a different arm action and grip from a more accessible central shift, plus it has a tight gate that eliminates any waggling around to find the cogs. A positive movement back and forward is needed, and you are rewarded with a taut, well-oiled mechanical action, albeit with a fairly long travel between first and second. Decently synchronised, this is a honey of a gearchange, and from it derives much of the pleasure of driving the Bentley.
For an engine a litre larger than that of the Jaguar, the surprise is that for a saloon still advertised as ‘The Silent Sports Car’ the power unit is in fact more obtrusive. You know you have a large-displacement multi-cylinder engine under your right foot. It’s not coarse – heavens no! – but there is a subdued bass tone of which you are always aware. Yet when you accelerate, the IoE ‘six’ never loses its composure. Thanks to low gearing and a solid wall of torque, the Bentley is even more effortless than the MkV, happily starting in second, pulling through roundabouts in third and being able to be trickled along in top. Drivability is uncanny. You can let out the clutch on the smallest of throttle openings, and the car won’t stall – so smooth is the power takeup.
With the ‘Big Bore’ Bentleys being just about 100mph cars, 60-70mph cruising is disdainfully relaxed, with the engine unruffled and wind noise the main disturbance. Just don’t expect better than 14-16mpg, advises Thornes.
The Bentley’s Marles cam-and-roller steering is on the heavy and low-geared side at parking speeds, but feels well-weighted, smooth and more alert when on the move – and with no lost motion. It’s pretty spot-on, really. With the front end checked by an anti-roll bar, it doesn’t lean excessively when cornered, either. The MkVI feels secure enough on the radials fitted to this car, and it rides comfortably enough for a vehicle
with a leaf-sprung rear. The hydro-mechanical brakes – assisted by the traditional Rolls-Royce gearbox-driven servo – are soft for check braking; but stand on the pedal and they are staunchly effective, even if the Bentley’s nose dips significantly under sharp braking. Set-up is critical, and I would prefer them to take up sooner.
Put bluntly, the MkVI screams quality. The engineering is exquisite, the car needs little acclimatisation
and is totally usable, whether on narrow country roads or the dual-carriageway. The Jaguar demands that you adapt to its way of going about business, but feels smoother if less sparkling. It doesn’t have the precision feel of the Crewe car, but it is a truly excellent piece of kit: civilised, well appointed, and very classy. In contrast, the Bentley is conservative – dull, even. But it has an underlying quality that is supremely seductive, and it delights from behind the wheel.
If I’d been in the market for such a car, I’d have purchased the Bentley, if I could have afforded it. But few had the wealth to do so. For those of still quite substantial means who aspired to a top-rank big saloon, you could buy the Jaguar for a third of the price, and hold your head high. Never mind the slightly blousy MkVII, the ‘forgotten Jaguar’ is the one that you should remember. The MkV is a superb achievement. It’s no Bentley, but there’s far less clear blue water between the two cars than you’d imagine.

¿Exageramos si llamamos al MkV el Jaguar olvidado? Quizás no. El coche apenas duró poco más de dos años, el período más corto de cualquier turismo Jaguar. Sólo se fabricaron 10.493 unidades, en comparación con los 26.000 de la serie SS anterior y los más de 47.000 MkVII-IX posteriores. ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que viste uno?
El MkV era, por supuesto, un modelo de transición temporal. Pero no merece ser olvidado, porque fue, creo, el turismo Jaguar más importante hasta la llegada del XJ6. Antes de los MkV, los Jaguar de antes de la guerra -el 1.5L, el 2.5L y el 3.5L- era coches capaces con un buen precio. Además, pronto quedó claro que tendría que esperar antes de que Pressed Steel le pudiera proporcionar la carrocería envolvente que quería para su “turismo de 160km/h”.
El MkV era un paso adelante lógico. Contemplando al MkV de Neville Hamilton, no puedo dejar de pensar que Jaguar ha adquirido todas las virtudes estéticas mostradas por los mejores Bentley Derby de antes de la guerra. A pesar de su parte trasera algo más bulbosa, el Jaguar posee una elegancia ágil y deportiva, enfatizada por la línea amplia de las aletas. Se ve más largo y bajo que el MkVI “Big Bore” de Angus Thornes; los 8.8cm menos de altura disimulan los casi 13cm menos de longitud con respecto al Bentley. La superestructura cromada de las puertas contribuye a ese aire de ligereza del coche de Coventry, aunque los robustos parachoques de doble fleje provocan el efecto contrario. En comparación, el MkVI parece más erguido pero también más conservador. Eso se debe en parte a sus líneas más afiladas y a la falta de estribos.
El interior del MkV denota bastante buen gusto, con una tapicería de piel sin plisados y un revestimiento de madera. Los asientos individuales a medida de altura ajustable proporcionan un buen respaldo a los pasajeros de delante mientras que la espaciosa parte de atrás la ocupa un asiento tipo sofá con dos apoyabrazos laterales y otro central que queda en un ángulo extraño al bajarlo. El acabado es bueno pero sencillo: William Lyons, famoso por mirar mucho el dinero, no tenía intención de disparar los costes de producción añadiendo piezas de equipamiento innecesarias.
Por contra, el Bentley mima a sus ocupantes, con un espejo con revestimiento de madera para damas a un lado del asiento trasero y un cenicero al otro, además de reposapiés y una gran bandeja de picnic articulada. Los reposabrazos delanteros se pueden ajustar, el conductor dispone de un mecanismo rápido de apertura de la ventanilla, una cortinilla del parabrisas trasero controlada con un deslizador y el típico cuadro de interruptores circular de Crewe con sus mandos cromados. La tapicería de los asientos es de piel plisada, con un aspecto menos elegante que la del Jaguar, las incrustaciones en los paneles de madera evocan el trabajo de los carroceros.
En cuanto a la conducción, en el Jaguar te sientas cerca del gran volante negro de cuatro brazos con una palanca de cambios regordeta en el túnel de transmisión – es algo rígida y con un recorrido largo para primera y segunda, y una guía más corta para tercera y cuarta. Va unida a un embrague suave de recorrido largo que tarda en reaccionar; es un cambio que exige una mano firme, pero es un placer manipularlo. Se supone que estas cajas de cambio Moss son difíciles, pero no me enganché en ninguna marcha, lo cual confirma mi impresión de que no se merecen esa reputación.
El motor ex-Standard con culata Weslake es increíblemente suave y ofrece una potencia uniforme subiendo a 3500rpm al acercarse a los 112km/h. A 128km/h tira con fuerza, y es más ruidoso, ya que está a 16km/h de su máximo genuino, con el ruido del viento como mayor obstáculo a su imperturbable avance. Como era entonces costumbre, las marchas del MkV son algo cortas, así que puedes salir en segunda y avanzar muy despacio en la marcha más larga, si quieres.
La dirección de bolas recirculantes Burman es relativamente lenta y va unida a un ángulo de viraje generoso, así que no debes demorar demasiado el giro. El coche es razonablemente comunicativo una vez en marcha y aunque al principio cuesta maniobrarlo, se va adaptando a ti. En las carreteras sinuosas, el Jaguar toma las curvas con aplomo. Las malas superficies nos descubren que el extremo delantero es algo blando, además de un pequeño movimiento estructural, mientras que la retención de los neumáticos de estructura diagonal indica que tiende a seguir las irregularidades. Los frenos funcionan bien aunque el recorrido del pedal es largo. Con todo, el MkV resulta un coche muy competente, más para carretera abierta que para carreteras rurales.
En el Bentley en seguida te sientes cómodo, con una posición de conducción más alta e imponente que hace que el coche parezca más estrecho de lo que es: de hecho, es 1.2cm más ancho que el Jaguar. La clave para dar rienda suelta a los placeres del Bentley es la palanca de cambios a la derecha. Ubicada en una abertura en el asiento, requiere una acción y un agarre más firmes que una palanca central más accesible, además la guía es muy concisa y evita tener que hacer demasiados movimientos para encontrar el engranaje. Basta un movimiento positivo hacia atrás y hacia adelante para verte recompensado por una acción mecánica bien engrasada, aunque el recorrido entre la primera y la segunda es algo largo. Sincronizada decentemente, es una caja de cambios maravillosa, y a ella se debe gran parte del placer de conducir un Bentley.
Para ser un motor de 1L más que el del Jaguar, sorprende que siendo un turismo que se vendía como “el deportivo silencioso” el motor sea, de hecho, más molesto. Eres consciente de tener un motor con gran cubicaje de varios cilindros bajo el pie derecho. No es áspero pero no puedes dejar de oír ese tono bajo mortecino todo el tiempo. Pero cuando aceleras, el seis cilindros en línea IOE no pierde jamás la compostura. Gracias a las marchas cortas y a un par sólido, el Bentley es más fácil de llevar aún que el MkV. Se puede arrancar perfectamente en segunda, pasar por rotondas en tercera y deambular sin prisas en la marcha más larga. La facilidad de maniobra es asombrosa. Puedes soltar el embrague con la más mínima aceleración y el coche no se cala – así de suave es la potencia. Como estos Bentley “Big Bore” eran coches de 160km/h, la marcha a 100-110km/h es desdeñosamente relajada, con el motor impávido y el ruido del viento como mayor estorbo. Ahora sí, no esperes nada mejor que 14-16L/100km, advierte Thorne.
La dirección Marles de sinfín y rodillo del Bentley es pesada y hay que acompañarla con marchas cortas a poca velocidad, pero parece equilibrada, suave y más alerta una vez en marcha – y sin pérdida del movimiento. Da en el clavo. Gracias a la barra estabilizadora delantera no se inclina demasiado en las curvas. Este MkVI parece lo suficientemente seguro sobre sus neumáticos radiales y se conduce cómodamente para ser un vehículo con una suspensión trasera de ballesta. Los frenos hidromecánicos – asistidos por un servo tradicionalmente accionado por la caja de cambios de Rolls-Royce- son blandos en una tentativa de frenado pero si los pisas a fondo son increíblemente efectivos, incluso cuando el morro del Bentley baja significativamente al frenar bruscamente. La configuración es esencial y yo preferiría que reaccionaran antes.
Dicho sin rodeos, el MkVI grita calidad. La ingeniería es exquisita, el coche necesita poca aclimatación para ser totalmente maniobrable, ya sea en carreteras rurales estrechas o en una autovía. El Jaguar exige que te adaptes a su modo de hacer las cosas, pero parece más suave aunque menos vibrante. No sientes esa precisión del coche de Crewe pero es una máquina realmente excelente: civilizada, bien equipada y con mucha clase. En contraste, el Bentley es conservador, incluso soso.
Pero tiene una cualidad subyacente que es supremamente seductora, y tras el volante es una delicia. Si hubiera estado buscando un coche de estas características me hubiera quedado con el Bentley, si hubiera podido pagarlo. Pero pocos tenían ese poder adquisitivo. Aquellos con posibles que aspiraban a un turismo de gama alta podían adquirir el Jaguar a un tercio del precio y mantener la cabeza alta. El MkV es un logro magnífico. No es un Bentley pero hay menos diferencias entre ambos coches de las que creías.

She glanced at the clock on the nightstand as she peeled off her soaked shorts and smiled, not because there was anything intrinsically funny about ten minutes to twelve on a morning in June, but because one of Scrooge's lines from A Christmas Carol had occurred to her: "The spirits have done it all in one night." It seemed to Lisey that something had accomplished a great deal in her own life in a very short period of time, most of it in the last few hours.
But you have to remember that I've been living in the past, and that takes up a surprising amount of a person's time, she thought…and after a moment's consideration let out a great, larruping laugh that probably would have sounded insane to anyone listening down the hall.
That's okay, keep laughin, babyluv, ain't nobody here but us chickadees, she thought, going into the bathroom. That big, loose laugh started to come out of her again, then stopped suddenly when it occurred to her that Dooley might be here. He could be holed up in the root cellar or one of this big house's many closets; he might be sweating it out this late morning in the attic, right over her head. She didn't know much about him and would be the first to admit it, but the idea that he had gone to ground here in the house fit what she did know. He'd already proved he was a bold sonofabitch.
Don't worry about him now. Worry about Darla and Canty.
Good idea. Lisey could get to Greenlawn ahead of her older sisters, that wouldn't be much of a horse-race, but she couldn't afford to dawdle, either. Keep your string a-drawing, she thought.
But she couldn't deny herself a moment in front of the fulllength mirror on the back of thebedroom door, standing with her hands at her sides, looking levelly and without prejudice at her slender, unremarkable, middle-aged body—and at her face, which Scott had once described as that of a fox in summer. It was a little puffy, nothing more. She looked like she'd slept exceptionally hard (maybe after a drink or three too many), and her lips still turned out a little, giving them a strangely sensual quality that made her feel both uneasy and a tiny bit gleeful. She hesitated, not sure what to do about that, and then found a tube of Revlon Hothouse Pink at the back of her lipstick drawer. She touched some on and nodded, a little doubtfully. If people were going to look at her lips— and she thought they might—she'd do better giving them something to look at than trying to cover up what couldn't be hidden.
The breast Dooley had operated on with such lunatic absorption was marked with an ugly scarlet ditch that circled up from beneath her armpit before petering out above her ribcage. It looked like a fairly bad cut that might have happened two or three weeks ago and was now healing well. The two shallower wounds looked like no more than the sort of red marks that resulted from wearing too-tight elastic garments. Or perhaps— if you had a lively imagination—rope burns. The difference between this and the horror she had observed upon regaining consciousness was amazing.
"All the Landons are fast healers, you sonofabitch," Lisey said, and stepped into the shower.

A quick rinse was all she had time for, and her breast was still sore enough to make her decide against a bra. She put on a pair of carpenter's pants and a loose tee-shirt. She slipped a vest over the latter to keep anyone from staring at her nipples, assuming guys bothered scoping out the nipples of fifty-year-old women, that was. According to Scott, they did. She remembered his telling her, once upon a happier time, that straight men stared at pretty much anyone of a female persuasion between the ages of roughly fourteen and eightyfour; he claimed it was a simple hardwired circuit between eye and cock, that the brain had nothing to do with it.
It was noon. She went downstairs, glanced into the living room, and saw the remainingpack of cigarettes sitting on the coffee table. She had no craving for cigarettes now. She got a fresh jar of Skippy out of the pantry instead (steeling herself for Jim Dooley lurking in the corner or behind the pantry door) and the strawberry jam out of the fridge. She made herself a PB&J on white and took two delicious, gummy bites before calling Professor Woodbody. The Castle County Sheriff's Department had taken "Zack McCool"'s threatening letter, but Lisey's memory for numbers had always been good, and this one was a cinch: Pittsburgh area code at one end, eighty-one and eighty-eight at the other. She was as willing to talk to the Queen of the Incunks as the King. An answering machine, however, would be inconvenient. She could leave her message, but would have no way of being sure it would reach the right ear in time to do any good.
She need not have worried. Woodbody himself answered, and he did not sound kingly. He sounded chastened and cautious. "Yes? Hello?"
"Hello, Professor Woodbody. This is Lisa Landon."
"I don't want to talk to you. I've spoken to my lawyer and he says I don't have to—"
"Chill," she said, and eyed her sandwich with longing. It wouldn't do to talk with her mouth full. On the upside, she thought this conversation was going to be brief. "I'm not going to make any trouble for you. No trouble with the cops, no trouble with lawyers, nothing like that. If you do me one teensy favor."
"What favor?" Woodbody sounded suspicious. Lisey couldn't blame him for that.
"There's an off-chance your friend Jim Dooley may call you today—"
"That guy's no friend of mine!" Woodbody bleated.
Right, Lisey thought. And you're well on your way to persuading yourself he never was.
"Okay, drinking buddy. Passing acquaintance. Whatever. If he calls, just tell him I've changed my mind, would you do that? Say I've regained my senses. Tell him I'll see him this evening, at eight, in my husband's study."
"You sound like someone preparing to get herself into a great deal of trouble, Mrs. Landon."
"Hey, you'd know, wouldn't you?" The sandwich was looking better and better. Lisey's stomach rumbled. "Professor, he probably won't call you. In which case, you're golden. If he does call, give him my message and you're also golden. But if he calls and you don't give him my message—just 'She's changed her mind, she wants to see you tonight in Scott's study at eight'—and I find out…then, sir, oy, such a mess I'm making for you."
"You can't. My lawyer says—"
"Don't listen to what he says. Be smart and listen to what I'm saying. My husband left me twenty million dollars. With that kind of money, if I decide to ass-fuck you, you'll spend the next three years shitting blood from a crouch. Got it?"
Lisey hung up before he could say anything else, tore a bite from her sandwich, got the lime Kool-Aid from the fridge, thought about a glass, then drank directly from the pitcher instead.

Li va semblar a la Lisey que en certa manera havia aconseguit fer moltes coses amb la seva vida en un breu espai de temps, la majoria en les darreres hores.
Però has de recordar que he estat vivint en el passat, i que això pot robar-li una quantitat considerable de temps a una persona, va pensar... I després de pensar-hi un moment va deixar anar una gran riallada agressiva, que si algú hagués sentit des del rebedor l’hauria presa per la d’un dement.
Això mateix, tu riu, amor, aquí tan sols hi som nosaltres, els carboners, va pensar tot i entrant al bany. Va tornar a deixar anar aquella gran rialla despreocupada, però es va aturar de cop quan se li va ocórrer que en Dooley podria ser allà. Es podria haver amagat al celler o en un dels nombrosos armaris de la gran casa; potser s’esperava pacient a les golfes, damunt el seu cap, mentre s’acostava el migdia. No en sabia gairebé res, sobre ell, i era la primera en admetre-ho, però la idea que s’hagués pogut refugiar aquí a la casa concordava amb el que sí en sabia. Ell ja li havia demostrat que era un malparit temerari.

Bona idea. La Lisey podia fer cap a Greenlawn abans que les seves germanes grans sense haver de fer un gran esforç, però tampoc es podia permetre perdre el temps. No perdis el fil, va pensar.
Però no va poder resistir la temptació de romandre un instant davant el mirall de cos sencer de darrera de la porta del dormitori, amb les mans als costats, contemplant amb calma i sense prejudicis el seu cos esvelt i poc remarcable de mitjana edat, i el seu rostre, que l’Scott havia descrit un cop com el d’una guineu a l’estiu. Estava un xic inflada i prou. Feia la fila d’haver dormit molt (potser després de prendre massa copes), i els seus llavis encara sortien cap a fora, adquirint una qualitat estranyament sensual que la feia sentir intranquil•la alhora que un xic alegre. Va dubtar, no sabia ben bé que fer amb ells, i llavors va trobar un tub de Rosa Brillant Revlon al fons del calaix dels pintallavis. El va provar i va assentir, un pèl dubtosa. Si la gent havia de mirar-li els llavis –com ella creia que farien- llavors era millor donar-los alguna cosa per mirar enlloc de provar de dissimular allò impossible d’ocultar.
El pit que en Dooley havia operat amb aquella absorció llunàtica quedava marcat per una horrorosa rasa morada que l’encerclava tot sortint de sota l’aixella abans d’esvair-se damunt el tòrax. Semblava un tall bastant greu de feia un parell o tres de setmanes que s’estava curant bé. Les dues ferides menys profundes no destacaven gaire més que la marca vermella que deixa la roba massa ajustada. O potser -si tenies molta imaginació-, les cremades causades per una corda. La diferència entre ara i l’horror que s’havia trobat al despertar-se era increïble.
-Tots els Landons es curen de pressa, malparit -va dir la Lisey, i va entrar a la dutxa.

Va tenir el temps just per una remullada ràpida, i com que encara tenia el pit adolorit, va decidir no posar-se sostenidor. Es va vestir amb uns pantalons amples i una samarreta folgada. Al damunt s’hi va posar una armilla per evitar que se li veiessin els mugrons, això assumint que els nois es prenguessin la molèstia de guaitar els mugrons de les dones de cinquanta, és clar. Segons l’Scott, ho feien. Ella recordava com li havia dit, en temps més feliços, que els homes heteros es miraven qualsevol femella entre els catorze i els vuitanta-quatre anys; segons ell, era culpa d’un circuit directe entre els ulls i la titola, i amb el qual el cervell no hi tenia cap connexió.
Era migdia. Va baixar al pis de baix, va donar un cop d’ull a la sala, i va veure el darrer paquet de cigarretes al damunt de la tauleta del cafè. Ja no tenia ansietat per fumar. Enlloc d’això va treure un pot de mantega de cacauet del rebost (traient-se del cap el pensament que en Jim Dooley l’espiava des del racó del darrere de la porta del rebost) i la melmelada de maduixa de la nevera. Es va fer un sandvitx de melmelada amb pa blanc i hi va clavar dues delicioses mossegades gomoses abans de trucar al professor Woodbody. La carta amenaçadora d’en Zack McCool s’havia quedat a l’oficina del xèrif del comptat de Castle, però la Lisey tenia una gran memòria per als números, i aquest era molt fàcil: el prefix de Pittsburg, vuitanta-un i vuitanta-vuit. Tenia tantes ganes de parlar amb la Reina dels Incuncs com amb el rei. Però trobar-hi el contestador no li aniria gens bé. Podia deixar-hi el seu missatge, però no podia assegurar-se que arribés a les oïdes adequades a temps.
No calia amoïnar-se. El mateix Woodbody va contestar i no sonava gaire regi. Sonava sumís i cautelós.
-¿Sí? ¿Hola?
-Hola, professor Woodbody. Sóc la Lisa Landon.
-No vull parlar amb vostè. He parlat amb el meu advocat i m’ha dit que no he de...
-Tranquil –va dir ella, tot i mirant-se el seu sandvitx amb anhel. No quedaria bé parlar amb la boca plena. Mirat pel cantó positiu, la conversa prometia ser breu-. No vull causar-li problemes. No vull problemes amb la poli, ni problemes amb advocats, ni res per l’estil. Tan sols necessito un petit favor.
-¿Quin favor? –en Woodbody sonava com si no les tingués totes. La Lisey no li ho podia pas retreure.
-Existeix la possibilitat que el seu vell amic Jim Dooley el truqui avui.
-Aquest tipus no és amic meu! –es va queixar en Woodbody.
Bé, va pensar la Lisey. I tu proves de convèncer-te a tu mateix que mai ho ha estat.
-Molt bé, company de borratxera. Conegut. El que sigui. Si truca, digui-li que he canviat d’idea, ¿ho farà? Digui-li que he recuperat el seny. Digui-li que ens trobarem aquest vespre, a les vuit, a l’estudi del meu marit.
-Sona com si estigués a punt de ficar-se en problemes greus, senyoreta Landon.
-Eh, vostè ho sap prou bé, ¿oi? –el sandvitx anava adquirint un aspecte més i més deliciós. L’estómac de la Lisey va rondinar-. Professor, probablement no el trucarà. En aquest cas estarem en paus. Si truca, doni-li el meu missatge i també estarem en paus. Però si truca i vostè no li dona el meu missatge, tan sols: “ha canviat d’idea, vol veure’t aquest vespre a l’estudi de l’Scott a les vuit” i jo me n’assabento... llavors, senyor... bé, li faré la vida impossible.
-No pot. El meu advocat diu...
-No li faci cas. Sigui llest i escolti el que jo li dic. El meu marit em va deixar vint milions de dòlars. Amb tots aquests diners, si decideixo donar-li pel sac, passarà els propers tres anys cagant sang. ¿M’entén?
La Lisey va penjar abans que ell pogués respondre, va clavar un mos al seu sandvitx, va agafar el refresc de llima de la nevera, va pensar en agafar un got, i va acabar optant per beure a morro.
