"Huele a guerra", pensó, tocando instintivamente el puñal de piedra atravesado en su ceñidor de lana tejida. Un sonido inesperado lo hizo agacharse y quedar inmóvil, temblando. Tener miedo no era extraño, en sus sueños abundaba el miedo. Esperó, tapado por las ramas de un arbusto y la noche sin estrellas. Muy lejos, probablemente del otro lado del gran lago, debían estar ardiendo fuegos de vivac; un resplandor rojizo teñía esa parte del cielo. El sonido no se repitió. Había sido como una rama quebrada. Tal vez un animal que escapaba como él del olor a guerra. Se enderezó despacio, venteando. La primera vez que se me ocurrió tentar la experiencia a cuyo relato están dedicadas estas líneas, fue una tarde, leyendo no sé dónde, que los naturales de Java atribuían la falta de lenguaje articulado en los monos a la abstención, no a la incapacidad. --No hablan, --decían--, para que no los hagan trabajar.
Semejante idea, nada profunda al principio, acabó por preocuparme hasta convertirse en este postulado antropológico:
Los monos fueron hombres que por una u otra razón dejaron de hablar. El hecho produjo la atrofia de sus órganos de fonación y de los centros cerebrales del lenguaje; debilitó casi hasta suprimirla la relación entre unos y otros, fijando el idioma de la especie en el grito inarticulado, y el humano primitivo descendió a ser animal.
Claro es que si llegara a demostrarse esto quedarían explicadas desde luego todas las anomalías que hacen del mono un ser tan singular; pero esto no tendría sino una demostración posible: volver el mono al lenguaje.

This resulted in fixing the language of the species as an inarticulate growl; and these primitive humans devolved back into animals.
Clearly, if this could be proven, then all the anomalies that make the ape such a singular being would be explained. But there could be only one possible way to prove it: return the monkey to speech.
Meanwhile, I had been roaming the world with mine, bonding with him increasingly through our travels and adventures. In Europe, he attracted attention, and if I had wanted to, I could have made him as famous as a Consul. But my reputation as a businessman would have sat ill with such foolery.
Impelled by my conviction of apes’ ability to speak, I devoured everything I could find on the subject, with no appreciable result. The only thing I knew with absolute certainty was that there was no scientific reason for them not to speak. It took me five years of study to reach this conclusion.

The student teacher in your child's classroom, ____________________________________, is enrolled in a Master’s degree program at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). As a part of the student teachers’ program, we ask them to videotape themselves teaching at least one lesson per semester as a way of getting a different perspective on their practice. Sometimes the student teacher also takes photographs of classroom activities as another way to learn about effective ways to teach.
We use these photos and videotapes primarily to assist the student teacher in learning how to teach. In these cases, the photos and videos are seen only by students and instructors at Penn for internal, educational purposes.
We sometimes like to use photos or video clips for recruiting and publicity purposes, for example to help prospective students learn about our program.

Quest Atlantis
You are invited to participate in a research study of learning and teaching project that uses an online, computer-based environment to engage children in educational tasks. You were selected as a possible subject because you have requested use of the program or a member of your school or center's administration suggested that you use the program. We ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.
The study is being conducted by Dr. [xxxx], a professor of [xxxx] at [xx]'s Center for [xxx]. This work has been funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Parks Service and other sponsors.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to learn about the program's effectiveness for supporting academic learning and understanding how engaging children and adults in a narratively-rich game-based environment can affect their enjoyment of and participation in the learning process.
NUMBER OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
If you agree to participate, you will be one of up to 43,000 participants worldwide who will be involved in this research.
PROCEDURES FOR THE STUDY
If you agree to be in the study, you will be trained to use the Quest Atlantis program. Quest Atlantis strives to use technology to involve children and adults in meaningful learning experiences--experiences where they solve educational challenges called Quests. Completing Quests requires that you and your students participate in real-world, socially and academically meaningful activities, such as conducting environmental studies,researching other cultures, calculating frequency distributions, analyzing newspaper articles, interviewing community members, and developing action plans. Our experience is that through these activities, children will not only learn to use technology, but will also develop academic and 21st century new media literacy and communication skills as well.
As a part of our project development, we will be observing children and participating adults interacting at their school or in an after-school program and in the online Quest Atlantis space. All interactions in the online space are recorded by the computer and saved as part of our database. Our team may also be taking notes on how children and adults use the technology and possibly interviewing students or teachers about their experiences in the program. Interviews will last from 15 to 30 minutes. Information from these observations and interviews, as well as the computerized records of their participation in the online space will be entered into a password-protected database. Observations and interviews may be audio or video taped so that researchers can analyze data more closely. We also may make copies of materials that you or your students produce in the Quest Atlantis space.
You are free to participate in this study as much or as little as you choose. You may withdraw at any time without any penalty. Typically, you might spend 40 minutes a session interacting with the program, with the number of sessions being determined by you, the teacher or staff member. You may participate in this study for one year or for several years, depending on your willingness to participate. If you choose to participate, we will need your consent for observing and videotaping your activities. Participation in this program is strictly voluntary. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from this study, you will not be audio or video taped, and your data will not be analyzed.
RISKS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
Although we do not anticipate any risks associated with your participation in this study, it is possible that, despite our best efforts, confidentiality might be lost. In addition, some of your students may be exposed to inappropriate language which may result in additional intervention time with parents or students. In addition, there may be other side effects that we cannot predict.
To reduce these risks, we take a variety of precautions to prevent the loss of confidentiality. All records are kept either in a password-protected database or in locked drawers. (See the Confidentiality section below for more details.)
All interactions in the game are captured and diligently monitored by our staff to document and act upon any potentially problematic situations. Children and teachers may also report any problems they encounter easily within the game. Students are also provided with a series of guidelines about appropriate behavior in the game which may reduce the number of inappropriate exchanges you might need to mediate.
BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
We expect you will benefit by participating in this study by being given an innovative curriculum which couples disciplinary learning with real-world applications, thus creating a project-based learning context for you and your students to explore. Both your use of this curriculum, and the support we provide to you and your students while using it, are subsidized by grant funding. In addition, you will be invited to join a community of teachers who are using Quest Atlantis in their own classrooms, thus creating a novel source of professional development and support, should you choose to use it.
ALTERNATIVES TO TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
You have the option to evaluate the program and determine if you wish to participate. You are not obligated to participate in Quest Atlantis, and you can withdraw your participation at any time. Interested students or parents may request a separate version of the consent form which does not allow audio or video taping but does allow us to analyze data gained through the study. If you have students with this modified consent in your classroom, we will not be audio or video taping those students during any research implementation.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Protecting your confidentiality is extremely important to us. The online space is password protected so that only registered users with a password are in the online space. Every effort will be made to keep your personal information confidential. We cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. Your personal information may be disclosed if required by law. Your identity will be held in confidence in reports in which the study may be published. In any reports of this research, there will be no mention of you by name or the name of your school or after-school program. All computerized records of your work, emails, or chat will be sanitized so that in the reporting of the data you will not be identifiable. Confidentiality will be maintained in all reports of this study. Further, all data will be kept in a locked place. All identifying marks will be removed from the data and pseudonyms will be used in any and all reporting of the data. Any tapes or materials will be destroyed at the end of the project, or within three years, whichever comes first.
Organizations that may inspect and/or copy your research records for quality assurance and data analysis include groups such as the study investigator and his/her research associates, the Institution Review Board or its designees, and (as allowed by law) state or federal agencies, specifically the Office for Human Research Protections.
COSTS
Taking part in this study should not lead to added costs to you. Some participants have computers at home or use library computers for additional access, but this is not a required element of the program. Occasionally, additional project associated resources might be made available for download or purchase, but this is strictly voluntary and is not a required element of participation.
PAYMENT
You (will / will not) receive payment for taking part in this study. We reserve the right to award an honorarium if participation exceeds our expectations.

ALTERNATIVAS EN LUGAR DE LA PARTICIPACION EN ESTE ESTUDIO

As we set forth to write this book, we realized something important: Not only is the sea of social media vast, but the sea of social media books is keeping pace. You might read all day, every day, and find that you still aren’t clear on what it’s all about.

Al empezar a escribir este libro, nos dimos cuenta de algo importante: el mar de los medios sociales es vasto, pero el mar de libros sobre los medios sociales le sigue. Usted podría leer todo el día, todos los días, y descubrir que aun así no entiende claramente de qué se trata exactamente.
Pensamos que esto no es una buena forma de usar su tiempo.
Tampoco creemos que tenga mucho sentido volverse experto de técnicas de palabras claves del mercadeo de motores de búsqueda o en programar en lengua CSS para su página Twitter. Para esos propósitos usted tiene equipos creativos y de TI.
Pero sí pensamos que si es capaz de comprender las implicaciones estratégicas que rodean los medios sociales y de percibirlas como elementos que es posible integrar en su plan actual de mercadeo y comunicación, recuperará todo el tiempo que necesita para enfocarse en la planificación y ejecución, producir un impacto inmediato en la captación de las audiencias metas y emerger como el héroe de su empresa, no por manejar los medios sociales, sino por manejar medios sociales inteligentes.
¿Un terrón o dos?
Si usted no ha activado todavía una estrategia de medios sociales dentro de su organización, seguramente piensa que todo el mundo ya ha entrado hace mucho en la locura por los medios sociales y que usted es el último que se resiste. Hoy en día hay fácil acceso a productos iguales a los suyos (pero a precios con descuento) o al establecimiento de contactos comerciales a través de sitios de redes sociales (¡así ahorrándose esa cuota de inscripción de $299!), por no mencionar los conocimientos sobre su actividad obtenidos en seminarios de web, podcasts y videotutoriales —la mayoría de ellos gratuitos—. Como consecuencia de esto, muchas de las conclusiones obvias que habríamos sacado en el pasado respecto al apetito de los consumidores por nuestros maravillosos conocimientos, destrezas y productos han dejado simplemente de ser válidas. Y el estado de la economía solo ha servido para exacerbar este problema.
Ahora más que nunca, tanto las organizaciones establecidas como las nuevas, grandes marcas y las tiendas de barrio, en todas las actividades —hasta la última— deben ofrecer un valor tangible y táctico para los consumidores o correr el riesgo de perderlos completamente.
Y aun así, estas empresas —su empresa— también están en una posición única para captar nuevos grupos claves estableciendo elementos básicos de medios sociales, diseñados para dotar a los consumidores de soluciones con valor agregado para sus necesidades más urgentes.
Para plantear claramente la oportunidad: si usted siente que su marca está pasada de moda o que su organización está “fuera de juego” a la hora de entender los deseos de los consumidores e incrementar los resultados, los medios sociales le ofrecen a su compañía (o marca) la oportunidad de volver a ser relevante.
Desde los organismos sin fines de lucro hasta las organizaciones y asociaciones de los sectores gubernamental y corporativo, todos tienen las mismas necesidades: los consumidores a los que les gusta su marca quieren disfrutar de ventajas de servicio y de productos de valor agregado. Una única nota falsa en la Twitteresfera puede ocasionar un desastre en las relaciones públicas de su marca. Esto es algo que hemos visto con demasiada frecuencia en las marcas que simplemente no sabían lo que no sabían.
Y créanos, la energía que perderá en detener estos desastres —si aun es posible detenerlos— es en general mucho mayor que el tiempo que habría tomado hacer las cosas bien desde el principio. Pero esto implica saber por dónde empezar.
Nuestra meta es ayudar a que se ponga rápidamente al día y a que empiece a aplicar las tácticas de las redes sociales no solo como un medio para evitar crisis mayores sino también —y esto es más importante— para impulsar ventas, enfrentar y derrotar a la competencia y desarrollar formas de implementar herramientas esenciales diseñadas para lograr una inmediata captación de los clientes y, si se trabaja de la manera correcta, obtener aumentos espectaculares en los resultados finales.

Observe a la competencia o los modelos empresariales semejantes a los suyos. ¿Sus competidores envían actualizaciones diarias a los clientes por celular? Si responde que sí, pues le están ganando.
Quizás no en la comparación entre productos, pero le están ganando en ser los primeros en la mente del consumidor, frente al intento ocasional de parte de usted de proporcionarle información al mismo consumidor.
¿Quiere cambiar eso? El primer paso es llegar a conocer a los clientes. E inmediatamente después, es necesario que permita que los clientes le conozcan a usted.

I have a master's degree in Hispanic linguistics and literature, and a doctorate in Spanish literature, with specialization in Latin America. I also have a widely varied background, with training and work experience in health care and the medical sciences, some marketing and transportation (business), home economics/nutrition/child development, and even a little of the hard sciences (chemistry and physics). In addition to this, I also have translation experience in the health and medicine, social sciences, education, and literature. Finally, I have considerable copy-editing and proofreading experience as the managing editor for Hispanic Review, an academic journal that publishes research on literature and culture in the Hispanic world. I currently teach Spanish language and culture at the university level (including an introductory translation course) to undergraduates, with freelance translating as a side line.
I have been working as a part-time freelancer since 1995. My largest project to date was the translation to English in spring 2014 of a cultural studies book titled Cultures of Anyone: Studies on Cultural Democratization in the Spanish Neoliberal Crisis, written by Luis Moreno Caballud and published by Liverpool University Press. Previous large projects have been in the fields of marketing, social work, cultural studies, literary analysis/criticism, and a series of documents on community outreach for families with autistic children. I frequently translate essays from Spanish to English for Routledge, a publisher of academic and professional books.
This experience shows that I am flexible and can work across the range of fields indicated in my profile.
