Revenue and earnings growth
Once again, Axel Springer achieved substantial revenue growth and demonstrated its profitability in the first three months of 2012. At € 789.0 million, consolidated revenues
were 7.1 % higher than the corresponding figure for the first quarter of 2011, mainly due to the growth of Axel Springer’s digital media activities. Adjusted for consolidation
effects, the Group’s total revenues were 2.8 % higher than the corresponding year-ago figure.
EBITDA of € 136.5 million was 7.5 % higher than in the first three months of last year. The earnings growth was driven primarily by the profitable growth of the Group’s
Digital Media segment. The Group’s national print segments also generated a slight earnings increase, while EBITDA of the Print International segment was considerably
less than the corresponding year-ago figure.
Business performance in line with expectations
Axel Springer’s revenue and earnings performance in the first quarter of 2012 basically fulfilled the management’s expectations as expressed in the Annual Report 2011.
The 7.1 % increase in total revenues was in line with our expectation of an increase in the single-digit percentage range. As anticipated, our advertising revenues also increased ( 10.3 % over the year-ago figure); in that respect, the decrease in print media advertising revenues was more than offset by the growth of digital media advertising revenues. The press distribution market for our German print media performed somewhat better, and the press distribution market for our international activities somewhat worse, than our expectations. The 7.5 % earnings increase confirmed our expectation for a slight increase in earnings for the full year. The circulation revenues of € 293.8 million were 1.4 % higher than the corresponding year-ago figure (PY:€ 289.8 million) and accounted for 37.2 % (PY: 39.3 %) of the Group’s total revenues. The increase resulted from the slightly higher circulation revenues of the Axel Springer’s German newspapers and magazines.
At € 399.6 million, the Group’s advertising revenues were 10.3 % higher than the corresponding year-ago figure (PY: € 362.1 million), thanks to growth in the Digital
Media segment. The advertising revenues generated from Axel Springer’s digital activities now constitute more than half (54.4 %) of the Group’s total advertising revenues. As expected, the advertising revenues generated in the Group’s print activities were lower than the respective year-ago figure. In that respect, the decrease in international print advertising revenues was much greater than the corresponding decrease in the German print business. All together, advertising revenues accounted for 50.6 % (PY: 49.2 %) of the Group’s total revenues.

The quarterly financial report of Axel Springer AG as of March 31, 2012, fulfills the requirements of the German Securities Trading Act (WpHG). The consolidated interim financial statements were pre-pared in condensed form in conformity with the regulations of IAS 34, and by application of Section 315a HGB in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of the Interna-tional Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the interpretations of the IFRS Interpretations Committee (IFRS IC) approved by the IASB, in effect and recognized by the European Union (EU) as of the reporting date and applicable to interim financial reporting. The reporting currency is the Euro (€); unless otherwise indicated, all figures are stated in million Euros (€ millions). Totals and percentages have been calculated based on the Euro amounts before rounding and may differ from a calculation based on the reported million Euro amounts.
The accounting and valuation methods and the estimation methods applied in the interim financial statements as of March 31, 2012 are basically the same as those applied in the consolidated financial statements as of December 31, 2011. Los beneficios del 7,5% confirmaron nuestras expectativas de ligero incremento del beneficio para el año completo.
Los ingresos por difusión fueron de 293,8 millones de € y por tanto un 1,4% superiores a la cifra del año anterior (2011: 289,8 millones de €) lo que supuso el 37,2% (2011: 39,3%) de los ingresos totales del Grupo.
