thank you! Thanks! To all of you knitters! All replies were helpful. I chose Gilla because she mentioned the three names I'd found for the stitch, with explanations, thus confirming my choice of translation.
Evans (X) Nov 18, 2011:
I have found in one of my knitting books a description of a "rice stitch" which is different from moss stitch and punto de arroz. Moss stitch consists of one row of single ribbing (knit and purl) followed by another row of single ribbing but this time with the knit on top of the purl and the purl on top of the knit, which coincides with "punto de arroz". For "rice stitch" on the other hand you kint the first row as a normal row (knit only) and then the next row as single ribbing, and keep repeating these two rows - this is not punto de arroz as I understand it. So I think the correct translation is moss stitch.

moss stitch

As a knitter this is what I know as moss stitch in UK English. Although I think they call it seed stitch in the US.

I have confirmed by looking at google images of punto arroz. The examples are what I know as moss stitch.

It is a very common stitch but I've never heard it called rice stitch.

Ah, here's a reference:

It may be an US/UK difference, as I am not familiar with American knitting terms.

I've just checked my knitting books and none mention a rice stitch. One mentions seed stitch as a synonym or moss stitch.

Are you looking for a US term?

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Definitely moss stitch for me. Horrified to discover I couldn't remember what combo makes this effect and had to look it up. So much for my memory - I thought knitting was like riding a bicycle!

Rice stitch is a fun and interesting knitting stitch pattern that makes a cool raised pattern that looks somewhat like kernels of rice
