Spanish term

identidad ciudadana

Spanish to English Art/Literary Government / Politics speech

This has nothing to do with citizenship on the passport ("Nationality" on EU passports, perhaps German "Staatsangehörigkeit" would express that better) but of the identity implied in belonging to, or residing in a city. Since I am often interpellated by Americans whenever this usage of "citizen" pops up (I suppose "city states" only come to mind in second place in US history), I am wondering whether there is a better solution.

TIA for any help.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everybody. In this particular context, the etymology (from civitas) worked out, although further into the congress I'm certain I'll be using "urban" and "municipal" as well."

civic identity

how about civic identity...to convey the connection to the city, a kind of sense of belonging?

municipal identity

in keeping with the theme of the text, as in, the mention of "gestión municipal moderna"...

urban identity

If I'm reading this right, ciudadana here is not to do with the discourse of civics and citizenship but rather urban change and identity :)
