Spanish term

la memoria va actuando de manera diferente con el tiempo

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Art exhibit - photography
Same as last question. A photographer's essay. Thanks to all.

Thank you to everyone, I could've used any of these suggestions!
teju (asker) Oct 21, 2010:
I like Robert's suggestion for the beginning ... ... of the sentence. So this is what we have:
These encounters had a profound effect on me, **with***....?
Noni Gilbert Riley Oct 21, 2010:
Don't like where? Since we aim to please, how about "with memory shifting/working/acting/being/exerting/changing etc"?
teju (asker) Oct 21, 2010:
Not too sure that "where" fits here well. Any other suggestions?
teju (asker) Oct 21, 2010:
Thank you Noni!!! This artspeak is driving me batty! I normally translate essays written by curators, not artists. Some of the essays are quite dense, as you can see.
Noni Gilbert Riley Oct 21, 2010:
Teju against the clock! Context from previous post This is the context from the previous posting - may save a few secs!

"From a photographer's essay to introduce her work at a museum exhibit. Pure artspeak that lends itself to very different interpretations. I need to finish this in a few hours, appreciate all your help! TIA"

where memory exerts a differential affect over the course of time

Seems a natural and concise way of rendering what seems to be the underlying idea.

Suerte.

where memory shifts in different ways as time goes by

Don't think you can use "act" here in English....

It's ....These encounters.....where memory shifts in etc. I'm open to suggestions!
Note from asker:
Thank you for your suggestion. Not too sure "where" is the best way to translate "donde" in this sentence. Would you agree?
Peer comment(s):

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Was going to post but realised I was v similar: "memory works in different ways as time passes". We all understand what is being said, and are now looking for natural sounding English.

Thanks Noni! In artspeak it's often a bit long winded though!
agree Evans (X) : I think this works quite well, perhaps I would say "in which memory..."

Thanks Gilla! It sounds more poetic like that...I like it

where memory acts differently over time

literal translation to avoid distorting the author's thoughts. Seems to refer to the Historical Memory movement (identification of people buried in mass graves during the Spanish Civil War...)
