Spanish term

vida útil definida

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Accounting vida útil definida o indefinida
I am translating an accounts report, and this particular section has to do with intangible assets and how they are defined. I came upon "vida útil definida o indefinida" and I'm not sure how to get past "X or X useful life". Can somebody help me? Thank you.

Discussion

yolanda Speece Sep 26, 2009:
This looks like it would go in the depreciation section. When a piece of equipment is being used in a business, every year or every month of life it offers, it depreciates so much. When it has outlived its estimated depreciation, then it is either sold or it is no longer deducted from the daily operations. Please consider that I only took one semester of accounting but that is what I remember from that class I took 10 years ago.

Could it also have to do with book value or carrying value? In other words, how much life it has left?
Richard Cadena Sep 26, 2009:
Gracias Thank you for the context, Karla.
Richard Cadena Sep 26, 2009:
Monolingual material vs. bilingual dictionaries Former ATA President, Tom West, recommends using monolingual reference material and transcend what is available in bilingual dictionaries. "Useful life / Useful Lives" is the term used by accountants in the US.
Emilio Schulder Sep 26, 2009:
In the technical context, "useful life" - while not inbcorrect - is noy used much. Service life and lifespan are used. Check it out in a technical dictionary.
Carla Avenia Koency (asker) Sep 26, 2009:
By the way... I'm actually still wondering which would be more correct, Richard's or Maria´s suggestion... any more takers?
Carla Avenia Koency (asker) Sep 26, 2009:
Then, the term is obviously mentioned several times throughout the text.
Richard Cadena Sep 26, 2009:
More context, please. If you could provide us with the complete sentence, or better yet, the entire paragraph in order us to provide more accurate suggestions, that would be great.
Emma Ratcliffe Sep 26, 2009:
You should use Marias's answer as follows: definite or indefinite useful life. Good luck!
Carla Avenia Koency (asker) Sep 26, 2009:
Could it be determined or undetermined useful life?

Amortization measures the consumption of the value of an intangible asset, such as a copyright, patent or trademark. In accounting parlance, amortization refers to the deduction of capital expenses over the life of an intangible asset.

Intangible assets are generally expensed according to their life expectancy, but nonphysical assets may have either an identifiable or indefinite useful life. Examples of intangible assets with identifiable useful lives include copyrights and patents, and these are amortized on a straight-line basis over their economic or legal life, whichever is shorter.

Intangible assets
with indefinite useful lives are reassessed each year for impairment. If an impairment has occurred, then a loss must be recognized. An impairment loss is determined by subtracting the asset’s fair value from its book value. This impairment loss may be reversed only under certain circumstances. Trademarks and goodwill are examples of intangible assets with indefinite useful lives.

If the source text referred to assets such as machinery, rather than intangible assets, then 'service life' would be better than 'useful life'.

neutral Jennifer Levey : The text refers to intangible assets - I don't think something like 'goodwill' has a 'service life' (commonly used for tangible assets like machinery) or a 'lifespan' (usually used referring to people and animals).

definite-lived

The following terms can be found in the 2008 edition of Accounting Trends and Techniques published by the AICPA:
definite-lived assets
indefinite-lived assets
definite-lived goodwill
definite lived-intangible assets
intangible assets with finite useful lives

Following is a paragraph where some of these terms are used:
Note 2 (In Part) Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
Intangible Assets
Our intangible assets consist of (a) definite-lived assets subject to amortization such as patents, favorable customer contracts, customer relationships and backlog, and (b) indefinite-lived not subject to amortization such as goodwill and trademarks. We calculate amortization of definite-lived intangible assets on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the related assets ranging from less than one year for backlog to in excess of twenty-five years for customer relationships.

INTANGIBLE ASSETS
2.127 SFAS No. 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets, specifies that goodwill and intangible assets that have indefinite useful lives will not be subject to amortization, but rather will be tested at least annually for impairment. In addition, the Standard provides specific guidance on how to determine and measure goodwill impairment. Intangible assets that have finite useful lives will be amortized over their useful lives. SFAS No. 142 requires additional disclosures including information about carrying amounts of goodwill and other intangible assets, and estimates as to future intangible asset amortization expense. SFAS No. 141 (Revised), Business Combinations, Amends SFAS No. 142 to provide guidance on the impairment testing of acquired research and development intangible assets and assets that the acquirer intends not to use. It applies prospectively to business combinations for which the acquisition date is on or after the beginning of the first annual reporting period beginning on or after December 15, 2008 with early adoption prohibited.

Note that the term "useful life / useful lives" is used left and right in these texts extracted from the Accounting Trends and Techniques, which is my most reliable source of information or reference material when translating financial statements. Former ATA President, Tom West, recommends using monolingual reference material and transcend what is available in bilingual dictionaries. "Useful life / Useful Lives" is the term used by accountants in the US.

The following definition appears in Barron's Accounting Handbook which contains Barron's Dictionary of Accounting Terms:
USEFUL LIFE - typical operating service life of an asset for the purpose it was acquired. The term usually applies to fixed assets. The useful life used for depreciation accounting does not necessarily coincide with the actual physical life or any commonly recognized ECONOMIC LIFE. See also DEPRECIABLE LIFE; DEPRECIATION.
