I received a request for a large translation (French into English) from someone named "Charles Melrose". He asked for my full name, address and cell phone number so he could issue the check. He said he found my contact details on the ATA website.
I am very keen on doing the job but worried that this is a scam. Has anyone had a similar request?

Thanks Dan. Great post. Much to my disappointment, I agree wholeheartedly.

payment by check

Is there any country where payment by check is (still) normal business procedure? (Genuine question - if this sounds exasperated, that is not my intention.)

certified bank transfer

I would never accept a check from a US translation agency. I only accept checks from law firms as they are A-list clients and it's worth waiting a few days for a large check from a reliable client.

I am following up on this topic just to put his name and email out there again so it's searchable. ▲ Collapse
