Lately, including right now, I have been getting an error message in SDL TRADOS SUITE 2009. When confirming a segment, all of a sudden I get the "Object reference not set to an instance" message, and the segment is not confirmed, and I am basically unable to continue translating, at least not if I care to use the TM. Then Trados does not want to shut down (to re-start it). Re-booting does not seem to do the trick.

I actually re-booted Windows 7, and when I fired up Trados again it all of a sudden worked. However, I have saved the link you sent me for (a hopefully not all too near) future reference.

I do not claim that this will work in every case, but so far so good here.
Nikolaj suggests simply powering off the PC and starting over. Yes, but... whatever caused the original problem may still be in the source document and it may all too easily repeat. How well I know that to be true!
Here is what is working for me.
When that cursed message appears, there may be something in the source document that's wrong. As soon as you get this error try the following... See more I do not claim that this will work in every case, but so far so good here.

Here is what is working for me.
When that cursed message appears, there may be something in the source document that's wrong. As soon as you get this error try the following:
* Open the original document.
* Go to the same spot and highlight that sentence for later reference.
* Make copy of the source document and add to the file name something like "_flagged error site".
* Return to the other, non-edited source document.
* Examine the trouble site carefully for peculiarities (to use the polite word)
* If you can get rid of all frilly formating (hyper-links, bold, italics, superscripts, whatever), do it. Make it plain (imitation) vanilla.
* If you cannot find anything fishy just delete the damned segment/sentence/etc. and use the flagged file as one of your final steps to manually recover the deleted info. Save the change you made to this copy of the source file, and it now becomes the source file you want to translate.
* Now jettison the project. Because whatever work you have already done is safely inside your TM, you are not going to lose much time and effort.
* At this point you will be lied to by whatever bug caused the "object reference" error.
Go to "Projects" and "Remove project from list". It will seem as if not a damned thing is happening, but that is the bug telling you a lie. Once you do Nikolaj's reboot, the project will be gone. Good riddance.
* You may discover that the bug will not let you exit Trados. Use Task Manager to close it down (right click bottommost Windows toolbar).
* Go to the directory with the project and delete ALL the project files. Now, here I am assuming that you do have your TM and the original source files in a different directory. It's almost impossible not to).
* If your assignment has multiple source files and they are similar to the buggy one, you could benefit by opening them all and looking for similar spots as the one that buggered (sorry!) Trados to cause this error.
* Reboot the PC to exorcise its e-demons.
* Now, with the source file(s) purged of its troublesome bug, recreate the project in Trados, and to be on the superstitious safe side, use a slightly different name (such as adding "2nd attempt") so that any internal file links don't refer to the deleted stuff.
* With the source-file bug gone, the TM will repopulate everything you have already done and you are back to where you were when the fun began.
* Don't forget to use your "_flagged error site." file to add back into the exported target file the info that was deleted and to format it to resemble that which was lost.
So far I've not lost more than about a half an hour this way, and have not had to resort to installation & re-installation.
Naturally, this workaround is predicated on a source-file glitch, and if the error message has some other source, all bets are off, and reach for the tranquilizers (incl. booze, holy scripture, the treadmill, etc... whatever works personally best, and is legal!).
