Yest, SP2 is a beta

Yes, I totally agree with Dr G. Palka that Studio SP2 is full of problems.
To give you an example:
In the middle of a translation
of a TTX file, SDL Trados Studio started suddenly to download an update. Suddenly, the sdlxliff file format (the new Trados Studio format) could not be converted back to the target format (TTX) because it reports that it cannot find an object. No solution, no alternative, nothing. Three hours of work lost (when I tried three hours ago, it worked... See more

Three hours of work lost (when I tried three hours ago, it worked perfectly).
I've tried everything, like restarting the program, restarting Windows, even creating a new translation project from scratch. No avail. It no longer saves TTX. (I also tried it with a different set of TTX files, so it's not a corruption of the translation). I'm trying to reinstall the program, but probably I'll end up having to install the program on a different computer, last time I had a similar problem (with Word files) I ended up having to reformat the whole hard disk before it worked again.
What really pisses me off are two things:
a) The incompetence of their programmers. An error message that it cannot find an object (which object?) is absolutely worthless, even for debugging, much less for the user. Apparently those guys have never heard about something called exception handling or testing for null objects in the code. How can anybody try to identify the problem with such a generic message that says absolutely nothing?
b) There is no way to seek support from Trados for bugs. You actually have to PAY for support, and I complained some time ago that there is not even a form on the SDL Trados site to REPORT a bug (even if you do not get a response). So they have a buggy product, and let the users pay for advising them how to solve THEIR mistakes. Oh, and trying to find a solution for this problem (or others) on their site is next to impossible.
I upgraded to SDL Trados hoping to solve some of the problems of the old version. I will certainly not make that mistake again. The moment that I will have to change my CAT tool, I will certainly not look at them...
P.D. This time, I managed to solve the problem by uninstalling SDL Trados & installing it again. But can you imagine what crap their updating system if it starts destroying the work that you are doing at a certain moment? I've set my firewall to prevent it from ever accessing the Internet again... ▲ Collapse
