The rippability of an earth (rock) material is a measure of its ability to be excavated with conventional excavation equipment. A material may be classified as rippable, marginally rippable or non-rippable. The rippability of a material is often evaluated by an engineering geologist. An engineering geologist is a geologist trained and experienced in the discipline of engineering geology.

RIPPABILITY - A measure of the ease or difficulty with which a rock or earth material can be broken by tractor-drawn rippers or rigid steel tines into pieces that can be economically moved by other equipment, usually scrapers.

Горнокарбонските скали, които изграждат басейна са с твърдост от V и ХІ категория по *****пробиваемомст*****, въглищата са с твърдост от ХІІІ до ХІV категория то пробиваемост. Горнището и долнището на въглищните пластове е представено от аргилити и алевролити - глинести и глинесто-песъкливи лиски. Вследствие на изразена тектонска дейност лиските на места са изтискани и изместени от пясъчни, а пластовете са изцедени напълно или са н намалена мощност.
