bewusst redundant

German to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology) Software Manual
"Die Daten werden bewusst redundant auf der Datenbank vorgehalten. Dies Reduziert (sic) zum einen die Komplexität der DB-Architekturen und erhöht andererseits sowohl die Daten- wie Betriebssicherheit."

Talking about a sort of sales software used with SAP. I don't get "bewusst redundant". I suppose bewusst here might be deliberately, but I can't work out whether "redundant" relates to the data or the action of storing the data in the database. Either way, it's not making much sense to me. TIA for your assistance.
