Asker has made me laugh. I admit my attempt was really quite feeble. (I am thinking in poetic metaphors today!) But I think I understand now and would state the situation in the following manner:

Asker: Dear Tom: I don't know whether to laugh or cry ... but I would cry if I lost the job. I wish it were so simple and "beautiful"! However, it is from lindar which is to border/or to be adjacent to ... what was stumping me is the aires ...Thank you for your effort though.

Asker: Well, it seems both of us have had our laugh for the day! Now it sounds like a distinct possibility, as the preceding paragraph does speak to the type of construction. Somehow before, it was just not coming together ... Thanks a million!
