Can anyone recommend me a software or method to easily count the words on a Web-site? I usually copy and paste the text on a Word file, but I have to quote a big site, with lots of pages, and that would take a while... (and I may miss something...)

Thank you very much!
Elizabeth

Use TWB Analysis Feb 1, 2007

If the html files are available, you could use a CAT tool like Trados Workbench to count them. Just select the files in Tools/Analysis, and click on Analyse. You can count several hundred files in one go. The Trados WB 6.5 demo version will do if you don't have a full licence.

Web Stripper Feb 2, 2007

another useful tool is WebStripper, which allows you to download entire websites and browse them offline (and extract HTML source files).
You can find it at http://www.webstripper.net/

Practicount Feb 2, 2007

You can also try Practicount. It is a software designed for translators. You can count words, lines, pages from websites, pdf documents, and many other formats. It works with httrack and it is not expensive. It also makes automatic reports and invoices, in different languages.

I have used it for several months and it's great!

Good luck.

Search the forum first! Feb 5, 2007

Hi all,

This is another recurring Proz FAQ...

We need to separate this question into two steps:
1. Download/replicate the website
2. Do a wordcount on the material you downloaded.

For 1, WinHTTrack is open source, state of the art. It will cost you nothing, so I see no immediate advantage in going for trialware or nagware like Webstripper or Babelx.

Hi all,

For 2, if you have a recent version Trados or other commercial CAT tools you're all set. If you want to stay low buget, I guess Practicount does it. I'm not sure what Babelx has to offer in this respect?

But please do a search here on the forum for WinHTTrack, a lot has been said on this topic already....
