Government policy in the second quarter of the 19th century did not ultimately lead to harmonisation of the education system throughout the whole of the Russian Empire. As to Count Uvarov's views on the development of education within ethnic non-Russian regions, we must also recognise that while he and the government as a whole did share a common programme, there was in fact no single plan of action for putting it into effect. The reason why one could not be formulated lay in the religious, political and cultural differences between the various regions of Russia which also shaped the environment in which practical measures were undertaken by the central authorities, including in the domain of education. In particular, local policy on the inhabitants of the eastern and southern provinces of the empire was greatly at variance with the activity of the government, and specifically the Ministry of Education headed by Uvarov, in the Western and Baltic regions. Nonetheless, it would be incorrect to view Uvarov’s efforts to achieve the cultural assimilation of the peoples inhabiting the Empire and their inclusion within the Russian cultural sphere in absolute terms, just as it is impossible to make a generalised assessment of the methods used to achieve these aims. There is no doubt that certain measures affecting virtually the entire non-Russian population were indeed taken by the Minister of Education in accordance with these principles: above all, these included more attentiveness on the part of the central authorities to the study of Russian in academic institutions in regions inhabited by ethnic non-Russians. Yet it was not only in the western and north-western provinces that particular attention was paid to this matter. One of the main differences between the new initiative known as the Law on Transcaucasian Schools proposed in 1835 in the name of the emperor and the command paper which preceded it, passed in 1829, was that the former envisioned the active spreading of the Russian language, in which all other subjects were to be taught in the Tbilisi gymnasium (with the exception of the two lowest years). The gymnasium authorities were in turn obliged to ensure that pupils continued to speak Russian outside classes. Le Maroc renforce sa politique sécuritaire au grand soulagement des citoyens
Après un attentat terroriste dans un cybercafé à Casablanca qui a causé, dimanche soir, un mort et quatre blessés, nombreux sont ceux qui expriment leur soulagement quant «aux conséquences atténuées» de l’explosion. Seul le kamikaze qui a été emporté par une charge explosive dissimulée sous ses vêtements est décédé sur le champ. Le deuxième individu qui a pris la fuite a été aussitôt arrêté. Les trois autres personnes qui se trouvaient à l'intérieur du cybercafé ont été légèrement blessées et transportées aux urgences. Les deux terroristes sont âgés de vingt et vingt-trois ans. L’attentat a eu lieu à Sidi Moumen, quartier populaire de Casablanca dont sont issus les terroristes des évènements du 16 mai 2003. Selon des sources policières, les deux jeunes qui tentaient d’établir le contact avec leur cellule terroriste ne visaient pas le cybercafé.

Morocco tightens security to allay public fears
In the wake of a terrorist attack at an Internet cafe in Casablanca on Sunday evening which left one person dead and four others injured, many people have expressed their relief at the "limited impact" of the blast. Only the suicide bomber succumbed to the bomb concealed under his clothing, while a second terrorist who fled the scene was arrested immediately afterwards. The three other people in the Internet cafe at the time sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital. The two terrorists were aged 20 and 23 and the attack took place in the working-class district of Sidi Moumen in Casablanca, where the bombers of 16 May 2003 came from. According to police sources the two young men, who were trying to make contact with their terrorist cell, were not targeting the Internet cafe.
Despite mild concern, Moroccans have expressed their confidence in the efficiency of the security services, who have been making their presence felt up and down the country in recent weeks and especially in large cities such as Rabat and Casablanca. The forces of law and order are visible everywhere, on all main streets, and even car park attendants are obliged to inform the police if they witness any suspicious behaviour.
The government has made a series of arrests since the recent bombings in Algeria. Since 24 February the Moroccan security services have been actively pursuing two men named Mohamed Bakali and Mohamed Agbalou who are suspected of links with terrorist groups including Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
The measures taken by the Moroccan authorities to tackle religious extremism since the attacks of 16 May 2003 in Casablanca have led to prosecutions for terrorism-related offences and the disbanding of a number of radical groups. Over the last four years Morocco has seen a spate of incidents pointing to a growing terrorist threat.

Experience
Translation: One of my most prestigious projects to date was the translation of a number of papers written by Russian academics for a high-level international history conference held in Finland. I regularly translate articles on a wide range of subjects for two international news websites, case documents for a human rights NGO and a mixture of customer-facing and internal documentation (contracts, HR, etc.) for a leading Romanian telecommunications company. My EU translation experience to date amounts to over 350,000 source words.
Other: I am also a CELTA-qualified (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) teacher of English as a foreign language. My other work experience includes three years with an NGO in the asylum/immigration sector, for which I interpreted for one year before becoming a Dispersal Clerk and then a Project Worker, spending roughly a year in each of the latter two roles. As a Project Worker I advised refugees and asylum-seekers on their entitlement to support (housing/income) according to their immigration status and helped them to apply to the National Asylum Support Service (Home Office), though my work also involved giving advice on many other topics such as healthcare/education/legal services and liaising closely with other organisations and contacts such as the social services, solicitors, the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (as it was then known), community organisations and accommodation providers. I also worked for five years part-time with a major UK retailer and for six months in a university library as an information assistant.
