Bu kasabada eskiden yedi kilisenin olduğu söylenirdi; şimdi ise geriye sadece bir kilise kalmış durumda… Bu kasabada eskiden yedi yüz Ermeni ailesinin olduğu söylenirdi; şimdi ise geriye sadece bir aile kalmış durumda…
O zaman yaşadığımız ev geriye kalan bu tek kilisenin hemen bitişiğindeydi. Her sene artık havalar iyice ısınmaya başladığında biz mahallenin Müslüman çocukları da pazar sabahları erkenden kilisenin kapısına dayanır, yaşlılıktan kamburu çıkmış Filleh* Artin’in bastonuna dayana dayana, yavaş adımlarla gelip kiliseyi açmasını beklerdik. Onun kapıyı açmasıyla beraber biz mahallenin küçük çocukları da o kilisenin cemaatindenmiş gibi ondan evvel kilisenin kapısından içeriye doğru girerdik. Fakat bizim içeriye girme amacımız Pazar ayinine katılmak için değil, kilisenin bahçesinde bulunan ve mevsimine göre olgunlaşmaya başlayan kaysı, kiraz, erik, nar ve incirlerden kendi payımıza düşeni almaktı. Şayet kilisenin kapısı bir kale kapısı kadar sağlam ve avlusunu saran çevre duvarları Diyarbekir Surları kadar dayanıklı ve yüksek olmasaydı, biz kilisenin bahçesinde bulunan meyve ağaçlarına saldırmak için elbette Filleh Artin’in ayin için Pazar günü gelip kilisenin kapısını açmasını beklemezdik… Bizler, yani o mahallenin çocukları görmemiş insanlar gibi ağaçlara dadanıyor, henüz olgunlaşmamış ham meyveleri bile dalından koparıp götürüyorken, kilisenin bahçesinde deli danalar gibi koşup eğleniyorken o bir gün olsun bile bize karşı gönlünü burkmazdı. Sadece arada bir, “Aman evladım istediğinizi koparıp yiyin ama lütfen herhangi bir ağacın dalını incitmeyin.” derdi. Ancak hangimiz onun dediğini umursuyorduk ki… Her ne amaçla olursa olsun kiliseye gidip bahçesinde sesimizin yankılanıyor oluşunun onun da hoşuna gittiğini, bir baykuş gibi tek başına o kadim kilisenin içinde bulunmanın onu rahatsız ettiğini seziyorduk. Bizim bağırışlarımız kilisenin avlusundan yükselip yankılandığında o bize göz ucuyla bakar ve içten bir tebessümle yüzü aydınlanırdı. Kim bilir belki de kendi kavminden orda olması gereken ama keskin bir kılıcın geleceklerini kesip biçtiği için hiçbir zaman var olamayan çocukların orda olmasını düşlerdi.

The house we lived in back then was right next to this one church. Each year when the weather started to get really warm, we, the Muslim children of our neighborhood, would go to the church's gate very early on Sunday mornings. We would wait for Filleh Artin* to come and open the gate for us with his hunched back, his tiny steps and leaning on his walking stick. As soon as he opened the gate, the other young children of my neighborhood and I would march into the church before him as if we were also members of the faith. But the reason why we would go into the church was not to take part in Sunday communion; but to pick our shares of whichever fruits that were growing on the trees in the church's garden depending on the season, apricots, cherries, plums, pomegranates, figs or you tell me. If the church's gate were not as strong as a fortress and the surrounding walls as high and impenetrable as the Diyarbekir Walls, nobody could make us wait for Filleh Artin to come and open the gate for us on Sunday mornings for the communion... He would never get hurt or offended when we raided the church garden and ran around in circles like mad men, picking the fruits, even the unripe ones as if we never saw fruits in our lives. Every now and then, he would only say 'My children, eat all you want, but please pay attention not to break the branches of the trees as you do so.' But who cared about what he had to say! We felt that no matter for what reason, he was happy that we were there at the church talking and laughing with our voices echoing through the garden. We felt that he was sad and lonely like a lone owl being all on his own in the church. As our voices echoed through the church garden, he would look at us from the corner of his eye and his face would light up with a genuine smile. Who knows, maybe he would think of all the children of his faith who were supposed to be there, but who were not and would never be as a sharp sword had sliced up their futures into thousand pieces.

Traducción - inglés A disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources (UNISDR, 2009). The impacts of disasters may take years to recover depending on the scale and the scope of the disaster and at the basis of this scale and scope lie the nature of the hazard and the physical, social and administrative fragilities in the affected zones. Although preventing risks may often be impossible, there are measures to be taken in order to reduce the adverse effects of the disaster and/or keep them at a manageable level. In order to determine what those measures are, first of all, the risk factors and the systems to be affected by those factors (physical, social and administrative) should be identified correctly. Assessing the risk factors and fragilities together; in other words, determining the place, the scope and the possible adverse outcomes of a future disaster is the risk analysis of the said system.
