Spanish term

Cobertura noble

FVA Spanish to English Other Agriculture Coffee farming
Context: List of items in a Global Reporting Initiative indicator.
Appreciate your help.

Thomas Walker Apr 15:
I agree with Phil - we need the actual context.
Lisa Rosengard Apr 15:
From a site with pictures there's an impression it could be overhead covers installed over allotments or parts of coffee plantations, similar to an idea of a square tent upper part attached to poles or between walls. Its purpose is to protect the plants in the earth ground from heavy rain while the ground cover prevents the earth ground for plants from getting water logged or flooded.

Are you translating the Federación de Cafeteros website, which is where your definition comes from? This already has a translation on the English page, 'noble or unaggressive weeds', which is nonsense.

Also, translating a Spanish glossary into English is often a pointless exercise because of the lack of direct equivalence between terms.

If this is not what you're translating, please could we have the actual context.

cover crops

Asker hasn't posted an extract from the ST, but the term cobertura noble refers, in general terms, to the deliberate use of 'weeds' in ways that favour the yield or quality of a main crop.

'noble in the sense of 'altruistic', perhaps?

https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/cover_crops_part_1_valuable_cu...
"Cover crops are crops grown between harvest and planting of commodity or feed crops, usually not for harvest, but used instead for the production of biomass and the various agroecological benefits this additional biomass can provide. While cover crops are most often thought of as a means of preventing erosion and improving soil health, they can also be applied as an effective weed management tool. The ability of cover crops to suppress weeds is especially valuable in organic production systems where restriction of synthetic herbicide use leaves growers without any simple weed control solutions. Organic weed management can be so challenging, in fact, that organic farmers frequently cite weeds as the greatest barrier to organic production."
Note from asker:
Thank you. I'll stick with this translation.

neutral patinba : However, your text mentions to use of cover crops to combat, control, suppress or manage weeds, so they are not the same thing.

noble privet; 'unaggressive weeds'

- privet hedge, 'hedge' - as in hedging your bets - coincidentally overlapping with the non-gardening term in the second presumed financial weblink.

PS there are no 'aggressive weeds' in the Inner Temple Garden in London, the over-popular precursor to the Chelsea Flower Show.
Example sentence:

Privet is a type of bush with small leaves that stay green all year round. It is often grown in gardens to form hedges. The garden was enclosed by a privet hedge.

Noble Privet · Glossy green foliage · Evergreen Hedge Plant · Attracts Birds, Easy Care · Glossy green foliage.

"noble" means that it does not interfere with the main crop and can in fact be beneficial, so "beneficial ground cover" might be a fuller answer.

Living mulch planted to retard weed growth between corn rows
In agriculture, a living mulch is a cover crop interplanted or undersown with a main crop, and intended to serve the purposes of a mulch, such as weed suppression and regulation of soil temperature. Living mulches grow for a long time with the main crops, whereas cover crops are incorporated into the soil or killed with herbicides.

neutral philgoddard : This is a particular kind of ground cover. Your suggestion may work, but we need the context.

I don't see why you need context when you already have a full description of the term.

In addition to intercropping, other techniques include planting cover and buffer crops, which provide shade cover and protection from wind, frost, and heat.
