Spanish term
desinsectar
Spanish to English
Tech/Engineering
Agriculture
Thank you very much!!

disinfest
this means "to rid of infesting insects, vermin, etc." according to the New Shorter Oxford dictionary
It is alleged, in the case of one introduction, that inspections undertaken on entry to Australia did not include searches for this pest 'because it was not known to be in the country of origin'. In another case it is alleged that the consignee, when told that a consignment had to be disinfested with methyl bromide, persuaded the inspector to use another treatment less injurious to the plant 'because methyl bromide damages the plants'. It appears that there has been a failure to communicate to the inspectorate the precise location details of some rapidly dispersing insect pests that are known to pose a quarantine risk to Australia; and a lack of rigour in the application of prescribed quarantine disinfestation treatments.

In the United States, irradiation has been approved for use on foods since 1963 for the control of insects in wheat and wheat flour and since 1964 for the prevention of sprouting in potatoes. In February 1984, the FDA issued a proposal to permit the use of irradiation to inhibit the growth and maturation of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables, to disinfest food of insects, and to disinfect spices of microorganisms. The FDA reported that foods radiated up to 1kGy are wholesome and safe for human consumption, even in cases where the irradiated foods represent a large portion of the diet. In turn, low dose radiation was approved for fruits and vegetables to control maturation. (It is important to note that the 1kGy that the FDA allows is significantly less than the level of 10kGy deemed safe by international experts.)

También disinsection, y el verbo disinsect.
Subject to international requirements, desinsecting shall be carried out immediately before the last take-off when leaving a specified area (see para 7a). The method to be used is the \"blocks away\" procedure which is an internationally recognized method of aircraft disinsection. The object is
to kill off all insects at the latest moment before departure. To be
effective the external spraying (see para 9f) must be carried out just before the aircraft doors are finally closed. Internal spraying shall be done after the doors are closed for take-off.

: Looking at yahoo hits, it seems that disinsect is used primarily for getting rid of insects on airplanes - not food.

Lo siento, no se me ocurrió pensar que desinsectar un avión difiere de desinsectar alimentos, de hecho en castellano ni siquiera me parece correcto.

disinfect
This is how the term is translated in the Larousse Spanish-English Dictionary, and I think it could easily apply to a food process.

insecticidal fumigation
Chloropicrin is a powerful tear gas; it is one of the most toxic to insects of the fumigants commonly used today. It is sometimes added in small proportions to other fumigants, e.g., hydrogen cyanide and methyl bromide, to serve as a warning agent (see Chapter 3).
Although the tear gas effect of Chloropicrin is helpful in preventing persons from staying in dangerous concentrations during the fumigation process, it is also a handicap because fumigated commodities are unpleasant to handle for some time after fumigation. Even comparatively small amounts diffusing from the treated material may be extremely irritating. If it were not for this disadvantage, Chloropicrin would be useful for commodity treatments as it penetrates effectively into many materials.
