This is a text that mentions 19th-century French criminologist Bertillon (I am sure he never imagined he would inspire so many critical 21st-century artists!)

Para analizar la escena del crimen, Bertillon desarrolló otro sistema fotográfico cuya finalidad era buscar indicios. Se tomaban imágenes con trípode, desde una perspectiva concreta y una altura fija, de elementos como el cadáver y otros objetos y restos físicos susceptibles de servir como pruebas, acompañados de un testigo métrico. Se fotografiaban de manera cenital y lateral, se hacían también varias tomas generales. Las fotografías recopiladas se insertaban en una ficha a la que rodeaba un marco con medidas para facilitar el reconocimiento de la posición, tamaño y lugar en la escena del crimen.

reference scale


Explanation:
This answer is close to Phil's, but there is a term "reference scale" that I know more from my field, geology, than from forensics. We are taught from day 1 of Geology 101 to always have a reference scale in all photos, because in photos of some things, from close-ups to huge outcrops, you just can't tell the size. Sometimes to give an approximate sense of scale, it's enough to have a colleague in the picture. But there are printed reference scales made especially to give a more precise sense of scale in photos
There is a more recent term, "photomacrographic scale," which I think is probably specific to forensics, unlikely to have been around in Bertillon's time. Also available for purchase, on Amazon and no doubt elsewhere.

Attach the close-up lens and look for small details; blood under fingernails, wounds, bullet casings, a bloody knife, whatever is critical to telling the story of the event.

Some items (shoeprints, scuffs, broken glass, tire marks) should be photographed both in their pristine condition and then with a ruler next to them for scale. When shooting with a ruler, try to shoot perpendicular, so that perspective does not change the dimensions when admitted in court.

A prisoner being "Bertillonaged" was first subjected to eleven different anthropometric measurements taken with specially designed calipers, gauges, and rulers. To ensure that the results were accurate and consistent, Bertillon meticulously choreographed the movements and gestures of both prisoner and police clerk. These photographs show Bertillon himself demonstrating his technique for measuring the middle finger.

neutral  philgoddard: I don't see how your answer is different to mine, except mine explains what the ruler is for. And 'métrico' doesn't mean 'metric', ie metres as opposed to feet and inches, it just means 'measuring'. One of your references says 'a ruler for scale'.
