Un pozo es un agujero o excavación o túnel vertical que perfora la tierra, para obtener agua o petroleo etc.

"Agujero" here seems to describe what an "estanque" is: Un estanque es una pequeña cavidad de agua, natural o artificial, utilizado cotidianamente para proveer al riego, criar peces, nadar, etcétera, o con fines meramente ornamentales.

The above definition of "estanque", brings to mind the appearance of a pond.
