Spanish term

PICNR

Spanish to English Medical
Acronym used to describe the neurological status of a patient on admission to intensive care.

I have only found one incidence of this term on the Web, in Google's cache at http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:Z3Fw2SW0xz8C:personales... where the meaning is not given.

Discussion

Karina Pelech Nov 2, 2002:
Also - are you sure it's PICNR? - because I get handwritten reports where things are sometimes not what they seem .. :o)
Karina Pelech Nov 2, 2002:
... if you could offer some more context, I think we may be able to help you - age of pt?, hx?, condition after etc..
Karina Pelech Nov 2, 2002:
There are a million and one possibilities for this, as I have never seen or used this acronym on inpatient admission...

Intracranial Pressure: Not Recorded (ICPNR)

PICNR= Presión IntraCraneana No Registrada.

In Spansih, we say "PIC" to refer to the intracranial pressure, which is often monitored in patients with neurologic disorders.

NR probably means 'no registrada', which may be secondary to negligence of the medical personnel, to the fact that the PIC machine or its measuring screw was not working, or to the fact that no PIC monitoring was implemented in this patient.

Assessment of dynamic cerebral autoregulation based on spontaneous
fluctuations in arterial blood pressure and **intracranial pressure**. Physiological Measurement. 23(1):59-72, 2002 Feb.

Abstract
Assessments of dynamic cerebral autoregulation usually measure the cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) response to changes in arterial blood pressure (ABP). We studied the effect of substituting ABP by cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), expressed as the difference between ABP and **intracranial pressure (ICP)**, in estimates of dynamic autoregulation obtained by transfer function analysis. CBFV, ABP and ICP were recorded during periods of physiological stability in 30 patients with severe head injury. Transfer function analysis was performed using the following combinations of input-output variables....

agree Karina Pelech : Sorry Elena, you're guessing here. ICP certainly does mean intracranial pressure, but you cannot give the whole explanation with 40% unexplained - NR could be a number of things, and PIC could be an English abbr.-'Ped Int Care' for example ... saludos :o)

"Ped Int Care" is not a used acronym in Neurology, the field Krys is inquiring about.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Elena. I have managed to confirm from another source that PIC stands for presión intracráneal. I'm less sure about the NR though. I have found out that it can stand for "no registrable", which seemed a bit more appropriate in this case. Thanks once more, Krys"
