Spanish term or phrase: descubierto
In a Q&A session about investments:

La posibilidad de hacer operaciones largas o ***en descubierto***, lo que permite a un inversionista obtener ganancias tanto en los mercados en descenso como en ascenso

"Prefiero invertir con el dinero que tengo, no jugar con descubiertos".

"a mi lo de invertir en descubierto nunca me ha convencido. mucho riesgo de perder lo q no se tiene..."

In my experience "descubierto" is usually "overdraft", but surely you don't use an overdraft for investments. I found "short selling" for "ventas al descubierto" in the glossary but I'm not sure this is the same sort of meaning.

Explanation:
Financial English, other than banking, is not my speciality, so this is a stab rather than a firm pronouncement. But the expression leapt to mind immediately and googling seems to lend it some credence.

Short (selling or position)

Explanation:
I first thought of "short selling", especially because you also have "largo", and "short" and "long" tend to go together in financial texts.
In the Diccionario de Términos económicos, financieros y comerciales by Alcaraz Varó y Hughes for "en/al descubierto" you have: overdrawn, unbacked, short).
This link provides a useful definition of Short: http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/short.asp

These are other links where the words are used, and the sentences are very similar to your first sentence.
daytrading.about.com/od/tradingpsychology/a/RisingFalling.htm
www.macquarie.com.au/mq/prime/long_and_short_positions.htm

If you look at the definition of Short selling you see that it also makes sense in your other sentences because short positions imply borrowing assets.

good luck
