Discussion

Marc Glinert Mar 7, 2006:
Thanks, elef. In that case, we should go with market monitor database.
elef (asker) Mar 7, 2006:
il s'agit du nom d'un dossier/fichier dedié au rassemblement des données d'un secteur specifique
en reponse à Mara: j'avais vu le glossary mais beaucoup de réponses et beaucoup d'incertitude
French Foodie Mar 7, 2006:
Hi elef, I think you'll find a lot of helpful suggestions in the glossary - this term comes up several times :-)

Monitoring Centre; Observatory

Without context, impossible to be more precise

As I said, without context, the choice between "monitoring centre" and "observatory" is difficult. As the asker wanted a translation for "observatoire" I gave both. However, it is not true that "observatory" is only used in EU texts. It can also be found in a WTO context.

agree anna-b : observatory - this term i've head of from english-speaking people as a trend monitoring tool

Thanks!
agree Cornelia Serban : "ART sets up an Observatory for the Internet market in France" - http://www.art-telecom.fr/communiques/pressrelease/2004/corp...

Thanks!
neutral Marc Glinert : yes but Cornelia it is fair to assume that art-telecom's press release was originally written in French. For all we know, it was translated internally by a native French speaker, to whom Observatory sounded fine.

Thanks!
agree LBMas : If it's for a UK or EU translation, Obervatory is accurate. It's frequently used w/ market research studies, as in "Research Observatory." http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reportinfo.asp?report_id=2...

Thanks!
neutral Adam Warren : "Observatory" is used by some EU bodies; I don't think it's the best. "Monitoring," however, is what this is about.

Did you read my answer? I mention "monioring" also!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. "

Market Monitoring Unit

Vantage point is miles away and there is too much of the physical sciences in Observatory.

We’ve got one of these and I always translate as Market Monitoring Unit
Peer comment(s):

agree Adam Warren : I think this is the best contribution: go for it

Thanks Adam
agree LBMas : Is there a better term than unit? It is more of a process and product. "Unit" means people/task force to me, in this context.

yes LBMas, following on from elef's additional comments, I now disagree with myself. See posting in Ask Asker box above

observation panel

another idea
Peer comment(s):

agree Adam Warren : not bad, but I prefer Marc Glinert's contribution, conveying the idea of a "monitoring station" - Regards

thank you Adam
agree Marc Glinert : Adam, you can call me Marc! & thanks! and sorry Sylvia for using your reply box for unrelated business

no problem, Marc!

vantage point

Another option, depending on context.

Elef, in view of your additional note, I don't think my suggestion would suit here.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Adam Warren : An "observatoire" is definitely some kind of "monitoring" facility. Your term is too vague for applications such as a "pharmacy watch" observatoire, an influenza "obs." &c.

After elef's clarification note I recognised this in my note posted a while ago.

market research database / resource centre / center

That's what it says on the can! :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Marc Glinert : Hi Conor, but doesn't market research suggest to you people testing products, often pre-launch. This is more of an overview of what is happening in the market

I wouldn't necessarily agree - any market data, if you've researched it, de facto becomes "market research" (hope that makes perfect sense!)

Market Segment Analysis/Market Analysis

Selon votre définition, elef, (dossier, rassemblement de données, secteur) je dirais que vous avez plusieurs choix en anglais: Market Segment Analysis, Market Monitoring (tout court), ou même Omnibus Research.
