all works well until Excel finds a paragraph mark in a Word cell - at this point Excel creates a new cell that did not exist in the Word table so that tables do not match any more. Any suggestion to prevent this? (apart from replacing all paragraph marks)

No, you MUST replace or NOT create additional paragraph marks in table cells Feb 2, 2005

Even manual line break (SHIFT+ENTER) causes Excel to crate a new cell.
If you copy a table from Excel to Word, all soft line breaks in Excel (ALT+ENTER) will be replaced by paragraph breaks. It is advisable either to replace thosy by a character string, which does not occur in the translation (x123z or similar), then to mark this in Trados as external TAG, translate, copy back to Excel and then search for that phrase to replace it with ALT+ENTER. AFAIK there is no automated search for this

AFAIK there is no automated search for this in Excel. The other possibility is to translate the Excel sheet with TAG Editor. It does recognise and keep the line breaks in Excel.
