A senior high school (grades 10 - 12) is what is generally meant by a secondary school. I'm not sure that middle schools fall in this category

Средняя общеобразовательная школа по-русски - это десятилетка. С 1 по 10 классы. С 1 по 8 - это неполное среднее образование.
То, что в нее входили начальные классы, elementary, это неважно. Они так и называются - начальные классы средней школы. Почему она при этом средняя - это одному Богу известно:-). Видимо, между детсадом и вузом....
This British term, thoroughly forgotten now, was widely accepted in the USSR. My school was translated as Special English Comprehensive School. Wikipedia talks about ages 11 to 16, but our school included elementary part as well.
