Sue précisa que John avait sport le vendredi et qu'il était souvent absent.

It depends on the level of language of the text. But "avoir sport" is the traditional expression used by students to say that they have sport class. EPS is the expression used in timetables and by headteachers.

neutral Tony M : Personally, I would steer clear of 'sport', as the EN is quite clearly 'PE', which is actually different from 'sports' in an English school

Although the equivalence of the activities is perhaps not 100%exact, that's the equivalent abbreviation you might find on a school timetable over here.

it should be noted that in the UK at least 'PE' (mainly things like gym, etc.) is treated as different from 'sports', hence why 'EPS' is probably the closest solution, one should certainly avoid going down the road of just 'sports'
