French term

ondulations

French to English Tech/Engineering Aerospace / Aviation / Space Pitot tubes
Context:
Suivant d’autres caractéristiques de la sonde selon l’invention prises seules ou en combinaison :
les ondulations sont décrites par une fonction sinusoïdale ;
la fonction sinusoïdale est du type y=A(x) sin⁡(πx/λ) où x est la distance à la pointe amont de la sonde, A(x) est l’amplitude de l’ondulation, fonction de la corde (C(x) ) et λ est la longueur d’onde de l’ondulation de bord d’attaque ;

As usual an editing task.
In this case ondulation has been translated as undulation, corrugation and ripple.
Which is correct/
TIA Chris.

Discussion

Bashiqa (asker) Jul 19, 2023:
@ Tony & Phil Hi, just received drawings and much to my surprise there are undulations machined into the surface of the Pitot tube! Client always used to send drawings with documents, but these days I have to ask and then don`t always get them. Thank you both, I`ll just check on test match before getting back to wotk.

I submitted my cheerful-looking ProZ profile picture, and then decided it was inappropriate for such a bad-news story!

You'd be glum if you had to fork out $5,000 a year for home insurance in hurricane-prone Florida and on a translator's income :-)

The story got over two million clicks, which was surprising.

@ Phil Pleased to see that you are OK relatively speaking. You looked very glum in the Guardian newspaper yesterday, when talking about storm insurance. Take care, Chris.

Wavelike variations in height or depth: This is the most general way to describe undulations.

Sinusoidal curves: This is a more specific way to describe undulations. It implies that the variations are regular and have a sine wave shape.

Wavy patterns: This is a more informal way to describe undulations.

Undulating surface: This is a way to describe a surface that has undulations.

Some characterists of undulations:

1. Is the most general term for a regular variation in height or depth.
2. Does not imply a specific depth or size, which is important in the context of the probe. The probe is designed to measure undulations of any size, so it is important to use a term that does not limit the scope of the measurement.
3. Is a more formal term than corrugations or ripples, which makes it more appropriate for the context of the probe. The probe is a scientific instrument, and it is important to use language that is appropriate for the scientific community.

cyclical variations

It isn't quite clear from the context exactly WHICH 'ondulations' are being referred to here, but I'm assuming it is more to do with soemthing like air pressure than anything like a phsyical surface.
However, it is clear that the specific charcteristic relevant here is the fact that these are repeating cyclical variations
Note from asker:
Hi, far from certain whether it is the air that is undulating or the undulations are a physical characteristic. Leading Edge Undulations Wings with unusual contours and undulations appear many places in nature. This from a lengthy pdf Effect of Airfoil-Preserved Undulations. My subject is a Pitot tube and do not imagine that undulations are machined into the front edge of the tube.
