French term

personnel immobilisé

French to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
In a company/plant, etc. what is "personnel immobilise"? I have a list of expenses incurred by a company during a certain year and this phrase is listed among other such expenses. Thanks.

Discussion

Philippa Smith Apr 14, 2011:
I guess that it should be "personnel immobilisé", with the accent, and that it refers to staff members who are out of action for whatever reason, accidents, illness, etc. I think you could use "immobilized personnel": doesn't get many Ghits, but neither does the French...

neutral Michel F. Morin : Non, je ne crois pas qu'il s'agisse d'une distinction entre personnel permanent ou non.

neutral writeaway : no, this is incorrect (read this as red neutral). it's staff not available for whatever reason

no problem, it was an awful guess and way off the mark, should have put a 1

staff tied up

Not in a bondage sense, of course... but presumably, tied up with some specific work or project, and hence having to be charged / costed in some way.
More context might help to make it clearer...
Peer comment(s):

agree Michel F. Morin : Oui, d'accord - par analogie avec "capital immobilisé" (tied up capital: tied up meaning not immediately accessible). See: http://dictionnaire.reverso.net/anglais-francais/tied-up capital

Merci, Michel ! Oui, et toujours selon le contexte, bien entendu !
neutral Jean Lachaud : see my remark in the discussion.

inactive staff

I agree with Philippa's idea of the definition, but I obviously can't be at all sure.

Idle staff

one more suggestion
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Could be right, but as we don't know why they are immobilisés, it might be wrong too. Also, there is a risk of unintentional humour, as idle may be interpreted as 'lazy'! / I know, but specifically 'idle staff'' is risky!

Thanks for your comment. Idle manpower, underutilized manpower and redeployment are some of the terminologies frequently used in an industrial environment.
