German term or phrase: auftrumpfende
[Singer's name] war als [character's name] der dramatisch auftrumpfende Tenor des Abends. The context is the same as in my previous message which I'll repeat here (more or less):
The phrase appears in the review of an opera performance. Here the critic is writing about the tenor and his singing. I have an English translation of the review which I have to translate into Italian, but I have strong doubts about it and need a second opinion.

Buoni suggerimenti. Grazie a tutti!. Credo che il suggerimento di Jim sia il più idiomaticamente scorrevole e rende perfettamente il significato.

triumphant / coming up trumps

Explanation:
basically this could be interepreted as he was showing off (negative) or he was the triumphant best (positive) And from the small amount of context I assume it is a positive comment

Explanation:
Both should do, although in fact the German sounds somewhat stilted to me.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Annett Kottek (X): Yes, the German's a bit verbose (and 'stilted', as noted by Gert Sass). I like this best as it doesn't sound laboured.
